Here's the problem with an A-to-Z best of. Sometimes the best of a particular letter is not very good, especially when that letter has few entries from which to choose! Take X, for instance. Were there ANY other musicals in that category besides Xanadu? I mean, I was a young adult when that came out. I liked it all right, but I wasn't very discriminating at that age, and it got dismal reviews. LOL Likewise, sometimes a particular letter has TONS of choices. S, for example. Singin' in the Rain is widely considered to be the best musical of all time. But what about School of Rock, Show Boat, Silk Stockings, Sister Act, The Sound of Music, and A Star Is Born? Virtually ANY of those would beat Xanadu in a best of competition. See the issue? Still, I did enjoy watching this video! Some of these I'd never even heard of before.

I guess some of these were obvious, but some of these were harder to choose, ey, say:
Blues Brothers vs Bye Bye Birdy, Hairspray vs Hair, Singin' in the Rain vs Sound of Music, Mary Poppins vs Les Miserables. I'm European, Evita vs Enchanted, the Phantom of the Opera vs Purple Rain, Cabaret vs Chicago vs a Chorus Line (oh my.
But really. Blues Brothers is a Movie Musical Film, like it or not. And I love it. So there. Point made!

Definitely a bias against musicals when musicals were central to the culture. Newsies over A Night at the Opera? All that Jazz over An American in Paris? Chicago over Carousel or Cabaret? West Side Story (great as it was) over The Wizard of Oz? Grease over Gentlemen Prefer Blondes? Mary Poppins over Meet Me in Saint Louis? I cant see any rationale for most of these choices except for the youth of the judges.

Put Newsies on here lol. A movie that Christian Bale refuses to speak about it's so good. Bugsy Malone is better than Bye Bye Birdie and putting Yentl instead of Yankee Doodle Dandy is a real headscratcher. You could have probably made an entire list based on Gene Kelly musicals if you wanted to.

I'm trying to get into the musical theatre genre and I knew most of the movies on this list before going on a musical binge. I guess I'm off to a good start? We need more musicals filmed today. S would be Sweeney Todd for me tbh. I love the dissonance in some of their songs.

While I love Fiedler On The Roof, I think Fame should have the F spot. It had two songs nominated for Oscars, one of which (Fame) won and it took the Oscar for Best Score, winning over John Williams score for The Empire Strikes Back.

Thank you for Newsies! Although, I have to admit N doesn't have many contenders: D
I knew Christian Bale is talented, the first time I saw him on Empire of The Sun. But only two years ago I found out he can sing and dance too!

You fail at this with the very first pick. A is for An American in Paris. All that Jazz is absolute garbage compared to that masterpiece. and it's a good movie musical! That's how much better AAIP is.

There are a lot of musicals that are great that begin with the same letter. Meanwhile. dafuq is that Umbrella one and Xanadu? They are probably the only musicals that start with those letters.

I haven't seen Purple Rain but I have seen The Phantom of The Opera, Pitch Perfect, The Princess and The Frog, and Pocahontas.
Is Purple Rain indeed the best among them?

Singing in the Rain instead of Sound of Music - I don't think so. Purple Rain before the Phantom - maybe you thought
Phantom was spelled Fantom

Mary Poppins o Dr My Fair Lady? If the best movie musical ever doesn't even win its letter, there is no reason to keep watching.

1988 Hairspray was WAY better then 2007. Prom should be P.
I will conceed Chicago is good even if I'm partial to Crybaby.

The fact that Annie, The Sound of Music and the Wizard of Oz aren't on this list invalidates the entire thing.
