Fun Fact: By his own account, Christian Bale wasn't too happy with the decision to turn Newsies into a musical. He is at least aware of the film's cult audience, stating that saying something negative about Newsies means there's an awful lot of people you have to answer to. It's something that would garner more just an embarrassed look than actual outrage (he even once briefly sang the Santa Fe refrain during an interview for The Dark Knight Rises, but suffice it to say, he's sworn off musicals.

bale had yet to master doing any kind of american accent
his new yawk accent was laughable
most of the kids accents were terrible and forced
they should have had the kids watch the dead end kids/bowery boys movies
other probs with the production was that it was clearly shot on a backstage. which might have been ok for a 50s musical. but 90s?
and all the kids looked far too clean
i believe the current stage show has added girls to the newsies

I'm glad you mentioned the fact the other papers had lowered distribution cost. The movie makes it out like there was no competition and all the papers were just praising and mirroring Pulitzer's moves. It was only those 2 papers. But that those papers shouldn't have changed, but my point is they weren't all being exploitative and that competition drove awareness of the newspaper boys/girls

Imagine the nightmare of making a movie with a significant number of children 8-10 years old. The actors were mostly young looking adults.
They were mostly orphans, incubator babies?
My granddaughter 6, has a Brooklyn accent, on the west coast, neither she nor her parents have been there. I have for a week.
Were the previous strikes young orphans too?

Interesting fact: (may be wrong) Historically Ed Racetrack higgis was Know as the true leader of brooklyn, Also he was known for being the Vice president of the strike, So Spot was based off of historical racetrack and not someone else

We all know that Jack Kelly would grow up to be an 80s yuppie who may or may not be a murderer, move to Gotham City to fight crime, while battling a heroin addiction and in turn became the VP of the USA.

If the character Kid Blink was the leader of the Newsies in real life, why did the casting director use Jack Kelly who is a fictional character as the leader of the Newsies in the film instead of Kid Blink?
reply

Number one: the newsies didn't actually sing in the streets of New York when they were striking. Heck, most of them could barely whistle, much less do choreographed dance numbers

I'm amazed to see anything about this movie mentioned today lol. I feel most of the focus is on the Broadway performance (which is good, but I can't get enough of this movie.

Was the girl who fell in love with newsboy Jack actually the daughter of Pulitzer as shown in the stage production I just saw?
reply

I had my first job delivering newspapers when I was ten, and I looked nothing like Jack. I'm much better looking.
reply

There is no real Jack Kelly? :-O: -O Did any of the Newsboys at least sing about Santa Fe or another warm state?
reply

Interesting fact: For the Broadway adaptation of the movie, the strike ends with the real-life compromise.
reply

Oh wow, I didnt know about the movie let alone about the actual history, so this is very informative!

I have one question: When the paper newsies were in protest, didnt the paper giants try to fire them?
