I liked this video, but I think, and this may be controversial, what's missing from the conversation is the greater reason why this show was created. I know it's crazy, but I think all of this actually refers back to a greater problem beyond Tyra and the show as a whole; the real issue was the INDUSTRY as a whole back then. Tyra created this show to give models a taste of the reality of the modeling industry, especially dealing with young, idealistic girls. It was a modeling boot camp designed to prepare models for the industry. A lot of the attitudes back then were mean-spirited. People would say, If you don't like the sacrifices that come with this job, go home. And even though Tyra had been toxic and had a hand in continuing the toxic culture of the industry, she _was_ merely teaching and preparing these girls for an already-toxic industry. She was teaching them what she had been taught. She was literally thinking I can't be easy on these girls. When I went through [x, y, z], no one had sympathy for me. If I don't teach these girls the nature of the industry, they will get burned. Better I prepare them now so they won't be so idealistic.
The problem with this thinking is that while helping the girls navigate the industry, as the show became bigger, it could have become a vehicle for change, while also reminding the girls that the greater industry behind-the-scenes isn't as forgiving. The way it was done was in bad taste. Yet, it made people respect models a lot more than before. Back then, many models would be turned down for not conforming. Tyra herself probably lost many opportunities for refusing certain things, such as being nude, because the industry had a my way, or the highway attitude. What this show did, of all things, was expose the greater industry and allowed for change to happen underground. That's why this show was needed, despite the toxicity, because the industry would not have been fixed otherwise.

While I agree with you on the list in general, with Elyse, she was not very nice, often times calling the other girls dumb or looking down on them. As far as I know, at the time of the show, Elyse applied to medical school. She wasn't even accepted yet. For this time, I agree with Tyra. I have to say, I am disappointed in Tyra though, I looked up to her, but she tore those girls apart, but I don't think she was all bad, there were rare moments of really humility and constructive critic. I don't think she was all bad, but man those episodes are rough looking back on them.
Edit after rewatching more episodes. OMG, I can't believe I said Tyra had good qualities. At best, I think she is narcissistic, at worst she is psychopathic (not a medical opinion, but my own observations. If Tyra was nice, there has to be something behind it, like putting a target on your back for the other models to turn on you because everyone was so close.

Well, my main thing is this. I will always love this show. Key word: SHOW. To act like Tyra and her show is the WORST of reality television really irks me. Yeah, she has unfair expectations. So does Survivor. Yeah, they have to do humiliating things that happens on Big Brother, Bachelor, Flavor of Love, The Challenge, ALL OF THEM.
I just hate that Tyra gets so much vitriol for literally doing what everyone else was doing in the 00s. Also, PLEASE REALIZE SHE HAS A WHOLE TEAM THAT MAKES UP THIS SHOW. Its not just her. Some stuff, yeah, they deserved to get called out on (blackface, unfair standards of beauty, forcing girls to change their ways, but not for the reality show trappings that everyone was doing.

Back in those days some of my family loved this show whilst I couldn't stand it one bit, mainly because I couldn't see what anyone was going to gain from this experience
And now after reviewing this video here, it has now confirmed my decision to be the right one, I feel sorry for any of the girls that had a horrible experience
And I don't believe what they actually did on this show, represent what the fashion model industry actually does outside it, for a start they would be a lot more supportive than what was shown in this competition

I was very upset for Will in cycle 21, as it was very hard for him to open up to his family and friends about being gay and then being accepted by them made him feel so free and at peace with who he is. However the ANTM judges pretty much told him Hey that's great that you're gay and that you can walk very well in heeled shoes, but really we'd like you to pose with women as if you're straight and walk like a straight man. Yeah that pissed me off. I hope wherever he is, that he's doing what he loves.

Wow. This show was so incredibly toxic. Because the modeling world and everyone involved (e. g. tyra+judges) are SO toxic. She took it way too far and visibly abused her authority on this show to manipulate these young girls into believing they needed to go to extremes to become a model and be marketable. This compilation is only a fraction of it. She was so convincing, that when you watched the show you felt like she was right. Its so crazy

I hate this show.
One model is screamed at for not showing enough emotion and tears, while another is told to Dry those tears if she wants to make it in the industry.
I despise using psychological and physical torture for entertainment.
Being defensive is unattractive. Y'know what's REALLY unattractive? Being a complete ahole, as all the judges were.
BTW, most of the winners have worked less than the runners-up.

I stopped watching ANTM because it was constant workplace bullying the contestants were brainwashed into thinking was the industry norm. I never knew supermodels already in it to effectively be tortured doing shots or have their hair chopped, bleached, etc on a client's whim. A lot of those girls were also unhealthily and worryingly thin which Tyra and Co shouldn't have been promoting as the way to be!

Looking back at the episode when they made a girl dress up as an elephant for a photo shoot because they called her fat for not starving herself and eating food normally was disgusting. They kept making fun of her stomach rolls, but literally stomach rolls are normal. Why should all those girls have to basically have eating disorders and walking skeletons to be marketable?

If fell an afinity to Heather as I am on the Autism spectrum too and that is how I am treated. People feel that they are able to treat you like that because you don't have a visible disability. If they had called the other girls out it would have sent a message to others saying that no - it is not OK to treat people like that because they are a bit strange.

Its almost like Tyra was brainwashed from her days in the modelling world. She treated the girls awful. Some of the things were damn near racist. She didnt do much for woman of colour on the show especially the earlier seasons. Yeah the had cover girl there for a big add campaign & black women in the running for it but didnt actually sell dark shades back then.

So the biological male is okay to live and be around those women living with them while they undress in front of each and the women werent comfortable with it. But its wrong for them to wear makeup and celebrate other cultures and ethnicities. Lol this world is so backwards. Most trans women are just males with autogynephilia. They have fetishes. Its sick.

I was so mad at this show when they gave Amanda a hard time for performing when she was freaking out about not being able to see the runway but then how was she able to do it? I thought she couldnt see! Was that not her finding a way to deal? And Ms. Jay taking her walking stick and being like dont ever bring this again. This show was soo ableist.

I loved this show as a teen. Looking at it now is kind of disgusting I would love to see a revival of this to celebrate diversity and show off the actual skills someone has as a model. Also are we going to forget Amy? I forget which season she was but she was always talked about because she was unattractive but always took great photos.

They need to file a class action lawsuit against Tyra, all of the judges, & everyone else associated with this show who went along with this abuse! They need a a good caring lawyer like Matthew Rosengart! He's busy with Britney Spears' case right now. But maybe he could take this on when he's done with her case.

Someone truly titled America's Top Model could choose or deny whatever job they want. Tyra making these girls feel like they HAVE to do things they are unwilling to do isn't realistic. In the real world they have the choice to stay and potentially be uncomfortable or simply leave.

Unfortunately, ANTM was the exact reflection of the model industry at that time. It was such an extreme emotional experience to grow up as young woman inside that industry. I'm so happy with the changes in the last years, but I can still see the toxicity in the background.

The nude thing is debatable. You can be a model without doing nudity (or even illusion of nudity, as Tyra explained in cycle one) but you have to do at least illusion of nudity if youre going to be the dynamic top model potential this competition is looking for.

Unfortunately, I used to watched ANTM. I think I only watched the first 5 cycles. As time went on, I realized what a toxic narcissist Tyra and her team were. The Tyra Banks Show was the most egregious! Tyra is truly is a terrible person

Lets not forget Janice! She NEVER missed an opportunity to openly call girls FAT or shout to the rooftops that they needed to lose weight. Not to mention her reactions to ANYTHING were always over the top and incredibly insulting.

Tyra literally got mad at Tiffany for not crying when she was eliminated and also Tiffany was only joking and smiling to make the other girls feel better. Damn when I was younger, I never realised how problematic this show was.

Eh. People are too weak and sensitive today. Society has a ton of issues but its not whats being presented. One day in the future we will look back and all this virtue signaling and pandering will be shameful.

I hope these woman are achieving big things. Even if it isn't as a model.

This show has aged like milk. As women we all need to find other methods of exposure that aren't obvious or manipulative or humiliating. This is, and was, never that.
