Top 10 TV Characters Who Live Financially Unrealistic Lives I dont think Penny should be on the list, in the show they make it clear that she is broke, gets her electricity cut off in multiple episode for payment failure and even had to run from the landlord for not paying her rent, she has multiple credit cards debt and mention that even with her new job as a pharmaceutical rep it would still take her a lot of time to pay her debt. It is also a running gag joke on the show that she takes advantage of Sheldon and Leonard WiFi and takeout. Her lifestyle is well explained.
Edit: and when she got engaged to Leonard and got her new paying job, she does say that Leonard was the one constantly paying everything for her, not to mention that time where it was Sheldon who lend her money for her rent. And unlike Carrie, when she goes shopping she openly admit that she cant afford them or will have to take extra shift to pay them off.\r\n

Actually about Penny. Her apartment is in neighborhood near the Colorado Boulevard which is the cheapest neighborhood in Pasadena. Also the salary in the Chessecake Factory isn't that low. And also she usually doesn't pay for her own food, doesn't have her own wifi (cough cough, Penny is a freeloader. No spaces. '') and her apartment isn't even big. On the other side Sheldon and Leonard doesn't make that much money even though they have PhDs and work in CalTech. The avrege salary of being a professor in CalTech isn't that big. But they are both super smart so they know how to save their money. So Penny's lifestyle isn't that unreastic. It is actually pretty realistic.

Ray Barone, Everybody Loves Raymond
has huge house in Long Island (explained no money down, balloon at the end in How Did We Get Here? but how realistic is that)
three children in private Catholic school
stay-at-home wife
two vehicles
Debra always is in new clothes, looking like she just came from the mall, instead of in yoga pants/leggings and comfy shirts like most stay-at-home moms wear
enough money left over for kids college funds, eating out, or anything else they need to do.
all while on, estimated $52K or so a year (at least, this was the last salary guess I read for his character in similar articles to this video)

Even though Penny was just a waitress during most of TBBT's run, it's not that implausible. Her apartment wasn't huge or fancy, just a standard 1 bedroom. And you'd be surprised how much someone in service industry can make, a few good nights in tips can add up quick. Not to mention, it was well established that she abused credit cards and could always count on Leonard to lend her money when she came up short, it wasn't a mystery and the show didn't exactly deny the fact that she was at times living beyond her means.

I was going to add Al Bundy from Married With Children to this list, but someone already beat me to it. I was also planning to add Sonny Crockett from Miami Vice to this list as how does a vice detective afford a yacht and a Ferrari, but I believe he explained that he got both the yacht and the Ferrari in a seized property police auction where he plowed his life savings into in a later episode, plus he lives in his yacht in the harbor.

I don't think it's that hard to imagine how they do it in Glee. Rachel and Kurt's apartment was probably paid by Rachel's parents. It's very well established in the show that her parents had money, specially considering she is an only child, and even in her fight with Brody he pointed out how she got it easy because her parents paid for everything. And I'm assuming that Butch did pitch in for some expenses.

Ok, Kara Zor-El is super human and has X-ray vision. she could literally go gold mining using her x-ray vision, find a gold vein, and sell that for extra cash. She could get a bag of charcoal, and put it under enough heat and pressure to turn it into a flawless diamond and sell that. there are so many ways she could make extra cash. I think that one might be wrong the others make sense.

It's addressed many multiple times throughout the first run of Will & Grace that Karen and Will pay for everything for Jack. It was even the reason why Jack said yes to being Beverly Leslie's boy toy to be able to pay Karen back for everything she'd paid for him over the years. So yes, not realistic, but not unaddressed how he could afford things like rent in NY without a stable job.

Im left to wonder what how my life will turn out when I do live on my own. Even if I have roommates or a spouse splitting costs with me, I do not have a grand scale financial experience, but I thankfully do not overspend, even if I pay a lot on food. I say that like buying so much of what I dont need: if I want to buy a new game or go see a movie or whatever, I do it sparingly.

I cant help but think that the YT comments tirade I recently went on against a probably unemployed housewifey-woman (talked about hubbys jobs a lot but never hers, whos comments on the sufficiency of the current minimum wage, probably developed her opinions about other work and earnings watching shows just like these.
. I really need to stay out of the comments section

In friends Joey didnt pay rent until he actually started to make money from his shows. Chandlar payed.
While in I Icarly spencer is supposed to be a successful artist. Its just his art isnt bought vary often do to its style. So in his case he could make his money off of thouse pieces he dos end up selling or by moonlighting on pieces payed for by a art house or buyer.

I have to agree with Penny being on this list, since she was a waitress at the Cheesecake Factory, living in a nice apartment in LA. The only reason she got by, before she landed a much better job, was because of her leeching off of Sheldon and Leonard for so long. I remember her being stuck without Internet, when Sheldon cut her off from his and Leonard's wifi.

I've always felt the assumption with Joey was that despite Chandler paid for all the rent and Joey ate everyone's food, he was living off residuals for a show he was on before FRIENDS began. Rachel knew him from his career as an actor before she met him, and it felt in the first two seasons his career was actually trying to get revitalized rather than just starting.

Shows notoriously have always had characters living beyond their means, think Mary Tyler Moore or That Girl. My college media class said sponsors want shows where people spend as it promotes consumerism and disposable consumption. Values that not only are self indulgent, read selfish, but are also bad for a planet with limited resources causing environmental stress

I feel like Supergirl just found a vacant apartment and flew her stuff in through the window in like 5 seconds.
However, I could see her making more than the average assistant AFTER her boss grows to genuinely care about her. And then didnt Jimmy Olsen become her boss so like. favoritism in her paychecks

Yes this has been mentioned to me on numerous occasions that what you see on tv is not even close to what living in major American cities is like, ' Friends ', gets the major mentions, but Penny from Big Bang is also brought up but no one really cares how she makes her money, I really miss that show.

Dexter is able to afford all those things because he has excellent credit and most likely inherited money from the death of both his foster parents and the sale of their house. Later on he acquires the house from his natural father and sells it. He probably has money put away from inheritance.

It's said multiple times throughout the show that Jack gets money from Karen, Will, and his Mother. They each pay half his rent (which is the joke, Will pays a ton of his bills, including at least one of his credit cards, and he has a credit card from Karen.

How about Fran Fine of The Nanny? Yes her room and board are covered as part of her job. But her outfits are dazzling and expensive. She is always shopping. Add her wigs and cosmetics and she better be bringing in a huge salary. Though she hardly works.

Sweet Valley High. When I used to watch that back in the day, I always wondered how the girls had a house and a jeep, but seemingly no parents. I don't think the show ever mentioned it unless it was in the books, but I never did read them.
reply

I know it's an old show, but The Monkees deserve this crown. Frequently unemployed musicians living in a Laurel Canyon beach house who drive a dune buggy and the Monkees mobile and still aren't homeless despite owing months of back rent.

Bo and Kenzi from Lost Girl
That loft the drums the endless Kenzie make up the supplies that magnificent bed
All on mostly chargeless private investigations
Not to mention the costs of clubs and travel and such

Spencer could have paid for part of the apartment but Im assuming their dad paid for most of it while Spencer paid for utilities and foods. When youre deployed like Colonel Shay was you make a pretty good salary.
reply

Well, at least Kara can literally crush coal into diamonds with her bate hands, so, I would think that being a reporter is more of a hobby-job than a I need it to live-job. The others, however, not very realistic.
reply

I watched that exact episode of iCarly last night and said the same thing: Spenser's art would not afford that huge apartment, not in Seattle. I don't think even their dad sending money back could do it.

Magazines don't pay alot. I wonder all the time how tv and movie characters afford their life. And don't forget new clothes all the time. drinks and dinner out several times a week. this is a great top 10.
reply

Another trope I hate is when Hollywood tries to make characters broke or struggling but completely bungle it up it just goes to show how out of touch they are with how money and financial stability works
reply

To be fair Carrie had the smallest apartment of the group. Its only a studio. Plus she was always in debt and her friends constantly help her or hook her up so at least that part is realistic
reply

I don't get it. I thought that all of these sitcoms got cancelled. I thought that it wasn't right for Joey to eat someone else's food in the first place. He should've asked first before doing so.
reply

I wonder how the Kids next door afford their treehouse, Dexter's laboratory how is dexter building so many machines and invention without his parents notice and sponge bob barley gets paid
