Yikes, these rom-com moments haven't aged well. Our countdown includes Sixteen Candles, The Ugly Truth, Shallow Hal, and more! What rom-com moment do YOU think is dated?

A lot of the plots in Love Actually haven't aged well.
There's the creepy guy who uses his gig as a photographer to film nothing but close-ups of his friend's bride because he's in love with her, then he shows up at the couple's house with giant cue cards telling the woman to not give him away while he proclaims his eternal love for her AND IT GETS HIM A KISS.
There's the dude who falls in love with his housekeeper even though they have no way of communicating and getting to know each other because they don't speak the same language.
There's the little boy who has a crush on his classmate, a girl who happens to have the same name as his dead mom. Paging Dr. Freud!
Yeah, Love Actually falls into the same trap a lot of rom-coms do: It frames creepy expectations and behavior as romantic.

When my half-Japanese gf and I watched Breakfast at Tiffany's, all she said after the movie Oh sweetie. you're so BAKAYAROU. Nah, just kidding, but you do realize that was at least a bit racist right? Then again we also watched The Wolverine together, seems racism is ever-present in Hollywood, doesn't matter if it's mutant X-Men or just people going to a high-end jewelry store. And some of the recent stereotypes have devolved so much that it's barely even based at all in reality anymore. I don't mind people playing on some stereotype that might be 1% or less true, but if you need a microscope and still can't see anything there, just change joke. please.

Pretty much this is why I detest rom-coms as a rule. The chars for the most part are SOOO unlikeable and cringey. There are exceptions since the chars can be charming, but 99% of the time I don't like them. Only ones I can think of that I enjoyed were The Wedding Singer, Clueless, and Midsummer Night's Dream. Looks up Rotten Tomatoes if there are more Okay, Much Ado About Nothing (1993 version) was good. Princess Bride is considered a Rom-Com? Sure it's one of my fav movies of all time, so yeah I guess I can see it as a Rom Com.

To quote Will Smith himself in the movie Then you werent listening. And when Eva Mendes says you trick women he cuts off her off and says TO GET OUT OF THEIR OWN WAY! So that great guys like Albert Brennaman have a fighting chance! Hitch shouldnt be on this list. His overall intentions are good. He gives men who would consider themselves less than flattering confidence. And he only helps men who legitimately believe they may have found love. Whats wrong with that?

Stop judging these movies by todays standards Im so sick of this they were
Made in a different time would we make these movies today probably not (at least without some changes to plot) and guess what were not better we just know more and understand why these movies probably should not be made if you could travel a hundred years into the future would you like to judge by their standards no so stop judging these movies by todays standards

You guys completely paint Mike from the ugly truth with the wrong colors! Its shown that he in his true nature is not chauvinistic, and is actually sweet and respectful of women in his interaction with his young nephew. That is the purpose of that whole scene. He needs to have a job, and why not an advice show that conforms to the chauvinistic attitude of most men in the early 2010s? Did you guys even watch the movie?
reply

Imagine being so not-fun that you simply cant even enjoy something like a comedy. Its almost as if these people dont understand the comedy genre. 2021 sucks. Cant do or say or think anything without clearing it with the woke police first.
I bet the people that made this list are real hoots at parties. If theyre even invited to them in the first place.

I really dont mind 10. I think its kind of good he gives shyer men a little boost. Its never the kind of lie that changes who the person is. Also the Sixteen Candles one always kind of confused me. Him initially just posing with his arm around an unconscious girl is just a bit weird. Then you hear they hooked up whilr she was drunk? Like what?

What about that rom-com where a woman kidnapped a random man for Christmas so he can pretend to be her boyfriend?
Theres also that scene in Because I said so where the heroine interrupts her psychiatrist sisters job to talk about her first-world problems AND she tells a suicidal man to jump out a window.

Comedies arent supposed to be politically correct. They can be raunchy, crude, absurd and more. You cant look at older films with PC goggles. The issues isnt the movies but the times we are in now. Certain stuff makes me uncomfortable with some films but that doesnt mean it needs to all be PC by 2021 standards
reply

At least a good portion of characters learn their lessons. However, it can be extremely cringe worthy to watch them get there. I can see why a good portion of romantic comedies couldn't be made the same way today as back then due to stereotypical depiction and misconceptions.

These are just things that offend you. All the things listed for each movie in the list arent bad at all. For bridewars you pretty much just said that its problematic because two friends stop being friends. ms mojo thats conflict and every film you watch has some
reply

In Chasing Amy, the saddest thing was seeing that the director had his heart in the right place, but the execution was really very problematic, worse that it was easy to fix, if he had made the character say it was bi, everything would be right, but anyway, it's done.
reply

These are characters, with flaws and conflicts, who go on an arc. If they were perfect from the start, we would be left with nothing but Mary Sues. I haven't seen all these movies, but in none of the them these problematic behaviours are glorified or praised.

I know this isnt really a rom com but I felt uncomfortable a few weeks ago when I watched Grease, especially the song Grease Lighting. Dont get me wrong I still really enjoyed the movie but yeah there are def some scenes in Grease where it hasnt aged well xx

I'm so glad I was a kid/teen back in the 90s and I actually got to enjoy life before even the sun just rising became offensive. It's the freaking i'm so woke olympics now a days. Y'all are exhausting. LIGHTEN UP!

I love how most of these are all just pointing out how men suck and saying how it doesnt fly in todays culture. Sounds like feminism. Not saying these movies are ok cause I pretty hate most of them.
reply

Through todays lens dude, it was 2009, hardly an eon ago as of this post.
Actually, after seeing the shallow hal entry I realise the likes to dislikes on this are mixed the wrong way.

reply

also if you're gonna point the racial finger at Mickey Rooney you should've pointed it at the Wayan Brothers for White Chicks (granted I love that movie but still lol)
reply

Shallow hal is literally a movie about how everyone can be judgemental and that people can learn and change, it's the most realistic movie out there to be honest
reply

I love Wedding Crashers but the bit with Gloria is definitely a cringe fest. I'm not much of a rom-com watcher otherwise so I was pretty indifferent watching this.
reply

Its sad when todays standards say that a movie cant start with a flawed character. Its the freaking point of character development in a movie.

Shoulda known what u were getting into with a movie called shallow Hal. Shouldnt be surprised when the main character name Hal is shallow
reply

Wedding Crashers and Sixteen Candles basically had a rape scene and people saw that as funny? What the hell is wrong with this world?
reply

#9 I was literally thinking about out today. The way Annes character makes her friend gain weight knowing it was a struggle for her.

If white actors aren't allowed to play non-white characters then non-white actors shouldn't be allowed to play white characters.
reply

All these are fictional comedy to be taken on face value i. e to laugh. Nothing about sending messages. You guys are over reaching
reply

What movies have been whitewashing recently? I thought theyd catch on that someone somewhere would call them out on it
reply

I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry is probably one of my favorite Adam Sandler movies! Great message behind it!
