I don't know why it's so surprising finding out how frustrated Philip was.
The series sheds light on how ticked off the guy was, but think about it.
( Occasionally, I did. )
Why aren't his kids named after him?
Why isn't he the king?
Why does he have to bow to her?
How come he dosen't use his name?
I think the answer to a lot of this is Germanophobia; if that's the right term.
WWI, WWII. .
The Kaiser and the rest of the Hohenzollerns. .
I remember a story about how Mountbatten tried to convince Parliament to use his name.
This must've happened just after Philip and Elizabeth got married.
He wouldn't stop asking why, and Parliament just kept refusing.
This argument or session must have lasted a long time.
If I'd been Philip, I wouldn't have put up with one second of this crapp.
He must have really loved the woman or really wanted to be the royal boyfriend for the rest of his life.

Here's the thing about the number one choice: it was really Margret that was breaking the promise her and the Queen made to their father. Edward let a woman come between his duty to Crown and family. Margret let a man come before her duty to crown and family. The promise they made to their father was to not let anything come between them. Margret broke that promise by wanting to marry Peter, a divorced man. In wanting to marry Wallis Simpson, King Edward was committing a derilection of duty. In wanting to marry Group Capt. Peter Townsend, Princess Margret was committing a dereliction of duty to the Crown and breaking her promise to her father to not let anything seperate her from her sister, who is Queen and is the Crown. Doing smething that would jeperdize her sister, the Queen, was putting Peter Townsend between the two. And The Corwn must always win.

A recurring theme in this is that those who are either born or married into the House, have to give up a lot of what is normal for either the common or even for other privileged. and especially from the POV of the older characters, that you don't get to quit. That is one key part of the Philip/Diana confrontation - yes, he knows better than anyone what all this costs and how it hurts. but as an Old School officer he accepts that he made his choice and has to live with it. Diana OTOH says to their face NO, I will not renounce happiness as an individual human for the sake of the institution.
Margaret was able to live to see divorces and remarriages inside the royal household become a thing. Maybe that was life paying back Elizabeth.

Mounbbatten had no right being in the Republic of Ireland where he was most certainly not wanted. He knew our feelings, and he most certainly knew the danger, that he was not just putting himself in but his family too. But in true royal fashion, their arrogance and dismissal of anyone not protestant and English, he went anyway, and sealed his fate. No one to blame but himself. And if you believe the rumours since before his death, he had a soft spot for little boys, which is why he would holiday in the West of Ireland and abuse them there. Hope he rots in hell, Up the Republic

They really screwed the series up by replacing the queen and prince Phillip. It's lost it fire, and the new replacement individuals are unbelievable, unremarkable, untalented, and overall just plain staunchy and boring actors. It no longer holds my interest. The first two actors were absolutely great for the roles. My family has stopped watching the series all together. It has become difficult to follow as the characters are unrecognizable. Too bad because it was a great series, emphasis on was.

The Crown is not a static thing resting forever on one head. It is moving, alive, divine. The changing face of changing times, and if, God willing, it has ordained that I should wear it then I shall do so on my own terms. Best of all all its parts are stoles from around the world. eg Kohinoor diamond from india. You have heard of kings, and soldiers and thieves but you might have never heard of thief empire.

Princess Alice: Four daughters and son-in-laws became Nazis (two of the latter fighting for the Axis, only son fought for the Allies and married the future Queen, used her disability as part of her successful scheme to hide Jewish refugees from the Nazis, deemed Righteous Among the Nations by Israel after her death for her actions during WWII. Indeed a very distinctive life.

The the thing that shocked me was Margaret going into her father's room while he was in the process of being embalmed and only had a cloth covering his loins. Who would want that as the last memory of her father. I don't know if it was real or not, either way it kind of grossed me out

What shocks me is that people think that The Crown is an historical documentary and not completely made up. Some of it - the documented public appearances etc. - are based on real events but all the private conversations are just fiction.

While the acting was done well and the series was likewise done well, it is all based on speculation, meaning that some of the events could be completely fictional; yet, people will believe them to be true.

Charles is like his own father and Williams is like Charles. What a family! Diana had the opportunity to run away the night before her wedding day when Charles told her that he was not in love with her.

The Queen Mother was a scoundrel! Not only did she ruin Margarets life, throw cousins to the wolves, she was part of the conspiracy to get Camilla to marry someone else and not Charles in the 1970s.

This series is rubbish, yet this American seem to think it is factual. It's like the fantasy has become the reality.
Americans - it is painful to hear this commentary - life Disneyfied.

The revelation that Phillip's mother, Princess Alice, had been treated for mental illness, even given electro shock treatment, all behind people not understanding her deafness.

You missed the best part of the clip between Prince Phillip and Diana. Phillip explains what the monarchy is. Diana is too damaged and self involved to put Elizabeth first.

The mistreatment of the two shut away in mental health facilities was abominable and heartless. Another situation where the Queen Mother had a horrible cold influence.

The Crown will never do Justice to the real RF. Its shallow and superficial and can never portray the RF. In fact l find the portrayal of the Queen to be rather insulting

I do hope people can remember The Crown is a drama series & not a documentary. I'm not defending the Royal Family but this is basically historical fiction.

The queen made two horrible decisions regarding her sister. It's a testament to their bond and Margaret's forgiving nature that she didn't hold a grudge.

To me its a tie between the revelation about Elizabeths uncles leanings, Lord Mountbattens assassination, and Margaret Thatcher trying to play Ibble Dibble.

The Nazi one was the top one. I won't say I am a big history buff but I know somewhat of the stuff that happened in WW2 but this even shocked me.

A reminder to all Americans that 'The Crown' is not a documentary. It is a fictional drama and that almost every scene is entirely made up.

I wonder if this actually happened between Charles and Diana. I hope it did though, that way both sides got the closure they needed.
