Lastly was A Chorus Line which was just a honorable mention on your list. There are good points to both the play and the movie. The play out shined the movie. One of the big advantages to the play which I saw in the 70's is that is was LIVE. Three of the plusses to the movie is First at the beginning of the movie you see a long line down Broadway waiting to audition. From what I have been told that is a true audition. Second in the movie you can delve into the characters history and they came here. Due to time restraints you couldn't do that in the play. Example: One of the characters said the night before an audition for a show a couple of months ago she had a breakdown and just got out of the hospital She also said the doctors said it was to soon to try again, but she did with this audition. Last thing she said was that if she lost, she won. Third and final thing is in in the final number of ONE' the number of dancers just kept growing and growing and growing. The mirrors were used to trick us. Every time a line walked to what we thought were the mirrors were more dancers.

Also Gwen Verdon was great later in her career in an episode of MASH along with the movie Cocoon and Cocoon-The Return. Third is the Phantom of the Opera. I was never lucky enough to see Michael Crawford in this show but I was lucky enough to see him early in his career in the movie Hello Dolly! with Barbra Streisand. He was in a minor role but his was brilliant in the role of Cornelius Hackl. FOURTH was MAME. I only saw the movie but I am sure that Angela Lansbury was fantastic in the role, I have loved everything I have seen her in like Death on the Nile, Murder She wrote and the Disney musical Bedknobs and Broomsticks and lending her voice to Beauty and the Beast. If you need to find a replacement for Ms Lansbury I don't think you could do anybody that Lucille Ball. Who doesn't Love Lucy? Pardon the pun. Plus it also starred Robert Preston and Bea Arthur who reprised her role from the Broadway Production as Vera Charles.

How does The Book of Mormon not get mentioned?
This isn't a list of movies that we would rather they had used the Broadway cast, so not had a less than stellar movie adaptation should be a plus rather than negative when it comes to wanting to finally see it get the big screen treatment.
It may be the lack of household names, but that doesn't mean Josh Gad, Andrew Rannells and the rest of the cast didn't put in great performance. In 2011 the original cast set the record for most tony nominations with 14, winning 9 tieing for the most won by a show. The soundtrack from the original cast went to #3 on the Billboard Albums chart and earned a grammy. After 10 years it is the 14th longest Broadway production of all time.
Is it that far off to think that it could at least get an honorable mention?

As much as i am a fan of Meryl and Nichole and only know James for his voice roles in Smallfoot and Trolls, I didn't think the Prom movie on Netflix was that bad. I just didn't expect the story to be more focused on the Broadway stars transformations from narcissists to actual caring activists and less on the secret love between Emma and Alyssa. But i plan on seeing the stage version somehow since the movie convinced me. The Wicked cast album with Idina (B. E. Before Elsa) & Kristin was my first Broadway soundtrack. I would be excited for them to reprise Elphaba and Glinda if this were the 2000's again. But I do hope Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande being cast in the movie will fill the void for all of us Wicked fans.

I just wanted to say that I never heard of a few of these musicals. I am writing about 5 musicals that I saw as a revival or a movie or both. FIRST Les Miserables 25th Anniversary show, revival a couple of years later then the the movie 3 times in the theater. The movie cast was great. SECOND was Chicago. I saw the movie which I absolutely loved and a revival. The revival was good but the movie was better, I am positive the original with Gwen Verdon, Chita Rivera and Jerry Orbach was phenomenal. I loved Gwen Verdon in the movie Damn Yankees playing Lola which she also did on Broadway. Plus Jerry Orbach is a great actor. I don't think you can say anything against him.

Your list is way off since the #1 obvious choice isn't on it. Time machines exist, right? Number 1 is My Fair Lady, with the original cast, meaning 21-year old Julie Andrews recreates her star-making performance as Eliza. She was born to play that role (she was also born to play Mary Poppins and Maria Van Trapp. To this day it remains a crime that Audrey Hepburn was cast instead.
The second most obvious choice would be Man of La Mancha, original cast headed by Richard Kiley. Brilliant musical, and the movie was totally butchered by horrendous casting decisions up and down. Poor direction, too. It was shameful how they ruined such a classic musical.

In defense of The Prom, before it went to broadway it was on pre-broadway (meaning it was an official show performing in New York but not on broadway) for almost 10 years and the four main characters from broadway in the show Dee Dee, Barry, Trent, and Angie were played by the same actors the entire time from the beginning of the pre-broadway days to the original cast on broadway when broadway officially picked it up, without any of them taking a break. So the reason why they probably werent in the movie because they had been playing the same characters for almost 10 years non stop and were most likely tired of it.

I agree that it would've been amazing for Michael Crawford to be in a film adaptation of Phantom, but not Sarah Brightman. Yes, yes, I know the role of Christine was written for her, but I've never cared much for her in it. Her vibrato makes her sound like she's trying to sing underwater and in all the video footage of her onstage, her acting is nothing but her giving a thousand-yard stare that's boring in general and terrifying in closeups. My ideal pairing for the Phantom and Christine, like you said if time travel were possible, would be Michael Crawford and Sierra Boggess.

While I loved Barbra in Hello, Dolly! Her vocals are wonderful, but it should have been Carol Channing. I saw her touring rendition. My mom thought it was the best thing she had ever sing.
I wished they had done The Secret Garden with my former college friend, Rebecca Luker, and Mandy Patinkin, and company. Of course it is too long ago, and poor Rebecca died of ALS in December.
I often wonder if any of the plays were taped, at the time, especially the present day musicals, since it would be easier, in digital.

Yes! Yes! and Yes. Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman were magic together. When this show emerged we were gob-smacked because we had no idea that Michael was a singer, we only new him as a gormless comedian in Some Mothers do Have Em. . Turns out he was in the Barbra Streisand movie Hello Dolly. Brilliant. Sarah and Andrea Boccelli are brilliant together. I love seeing people who we watch on TV mainly show their real talent; It's thrilling. Also see the performance of Sarah B. with Anthony Banderas so surprising.

Fully agree with Rock of Ages. It's not just the cast that needs to change though. It's the whole thing. The plot and characters in the musical are amazing as they are. Why did they need to change them for the movie? I was so excited when I heard the movie was coming out, and so disappointed when I actually saw it, because they took out my favourite character, Franz. They also made Stacee Jax a somewhat likable character in the movie, and he's not meant to be. Total garbage.

Have you ever seen Michael Crawford on a cereal box?
Who's Michael Crawford?
Exactly my point. He was the Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. Now my mom she's seen that musical twenty-seven times and she put Michael Crawford's picture in our refrigerator. Yeah, not on it, in it. So my point is: if you play basketball, you're gonna end up on a cereal box. If you sing in musicals, you're gonna end up in my mom's refrigerator.

So glad you put PotO at number 1! Butler and Rossum were both absolutely terrible! It makes me so sad knowing this awful movie is all so many people know of my favorite musical. I would like to say that if not Crawford and Brightman, the movie could be redone with the awesome Ramin Karimloo and fabulous Sierra Boggess who are both incredibly talented and have AMAZING chemistry too!

A Chorus Line belongs in a category of its own, since it is autobiographical about its original ensemble cast. IIRC, they won a lawsuit to get writing credit and royalties. I was privileged that one of my first Broadway experiences (Into the Woods was my very first) was A Chorus Line, then toward the end of its original run, which was at that time the longest in Broadway history.

I would love if Wicked could be done with the original cast but I know there were a lot of rumors about Idina Menzel having vocal damage after she left Wicked. I dont know if its true or not so if you have any information feel free to add it. There were rumors that in Frozen they used auto tune to help her out, but again I dont know for sure.

I think all hit Broadway and West End shows should do what Lin-Manuel Miranda did with Hamilton, and record the production with original stage casts for a film. Lets face it, most of the world isnt able to travel to London or New York to see a hit show, and adaptations often lose some of the magic that made the show a hit in the first place.

sometimes i forget the 25th anniversary Phantom of the Opera wasn't the movie adaptation because i always just watch that one since it's perfection. also side note i love how at the end of the Les Mis concert clip it has Ramin standing next to the other two Valjeans foreshadowing his future performance in the role

Um, actually, the 1982 Film of Sweeney Todd was not with the original cast. Some of the og cast was in it (like Angela Lansbury and Edmund Lyndeck, but Len Cariou was the original Sweeney (in the film it was George Hearn) and Victor Garber was the original Anthony (Cris Greonendaal in the film.

I think Gwen Verdon definitely deserved to play Roxie on screen. She advocated to get Chicago from page to stage for so long and worked so hard trying to get the show right and went through a lot to get there. She deserved more recognition and accolades for what she did

Honestly I am good watching Sierra Boggess, Ramin Karimloo, and Hadley Fraser in the 25th Phantom of the Opera. I don't need an original cast movie. I don't even like Sarah Brightmen's voice all that much especially compared to Sierra and Ramin's Phantom is SO good.

I'm happy with the movie of 'Evita', because they really softened the character. She was too sharp in the musical, since it was based on an anti-Peron book, and the Argentinians hate it. At least Madonna played her more sympathetically.

I'm interested to who critiqued Tom Cruise's singing. From what I heard at the premier, Poison, Def Leppard and Lita Ford had a lot of praise. Think if that's true I'll stick to their review. This movie def took me to paradise city

I got my Alfoe Boe and Micheal Ball version of Les Mis, and that will forever be my favorite version I've ever had the privilege to witness.
Phantom should have been done with actual singers. It's unwatchable.

Madonna was born to play, Eva Peron she should have gotten an oscar nomination for her role as should the movie. Lupone would have been too over dramatic and is only perfect for the stage.
