I'm sorry to say that, and I loved the movie, but I feel like they butchered the women. I mean, Nina was the main character, and they cut at least 4 of either her songs (Everything I know, Sunrise, her part in Blackout) or songs about her (Enough, Inutil, plus they litteraly killed her mom off. Vanessa's toxic mom becomes Sonny's toxic dad and we don't get the whole Daniela acting as a surrogate. Even Abuela Claudia's arc is reduced, we don't hear Hundred of Stories, we don't see her winning the lottery (just Usnavi reacting to it) and we don't even see her on the mural at the end? The main characters switch from Nina, Vanessa, Usnavi and Benny to Usnavi and Sonny - don't mind me, I love the undocumented immigrant storyline, but did they have to give it to a male character?
What I loved about the musical was that you could CLEARLY tell it was written by a woman, the female characters had plotlines and their own agendas and were not reduced to their relationships with a male character (versus Hamilton, where their only point is to be the hero's love interests. In the movie, there's Vanessa (Usnavi's love interest, Abuela (Usnavi's surrogate abuela, and not the whole block's, Nina (Benny's love interest, and the ladies of the salon (comic relief.

Overall, I liked the changes. New Sonnys plotline (my poor boy, I teared up when he said he cant go to college) was great, Vanessas dream about being the designer gave her more depth, revealing about the ticket made me cry for the secong time. I was happy to see new Blackout. I love the drama happening between Nina and Benny in the original musical, but lets be honest: Benny was unpleasantly rude to her. So Im glad he is a very decent guy in this version. I also liked how they changed Kevins attitude, tho original version again has more drama, which is also interesting and good. Only thing I DO really miss is Camilas character, especially when they added two new characters. Okay, the scene with Sonnys father was great, one little conversation hit SO hard. But Cuca. Why shes even there? They may give that little screen time to Camila and even that would make more sense, imo.

I really felt like the movie did the musical a disservice with most of these changes. They removed stuff that took out the heart and bite of the musical to make it more corny and saccharine. A lot of the stuff they added was purely cosmetic or lateral changes rather than adding anything of substance. And honestly, while I normally like the actors, they dont have the charisma range of the original cast and having Lin Manuel steal the show in his minor role only underlined that point. Which is weird because Anthony Ramos was Sonny in the original production but I feel like he was better suited for that than as Usnavi, while the kid playing Sonny was very amateurish. Really bummed that I didnt care for the movie more than I did, because I love the stage play.

True I have noticed that there were some things that were different from the movie than the play trust me I seen it myself it was incredible but the movie was more astonishing to be fair I am actually saying that it was a good idea to cut out some things to make the film a little bit less complicated to put some things together and some new ideas to make it more breathtaking and they left out something usNavys father he was never mentioned in the play and I like how they added him they did a good job with his usNavy and Vanessas entrance love them both they picked out perfect actors to play the parts

I know I'll be in the minority with this. I wasn't a super fan of the Broadway musical. I liked the visuals in the movie, but I was even less of a fan of the musical overall film adaptation. I could go into more detail but. I'm not going to fight people in the comments. I'm glad people have found a musical that they like. I love musical theater. I love musicals on film. This one is just not on my top list.
(And before someone says so why did you bother watching the video, I was just curious about the changes and if I missed any of them)

I really dislike the changes with Nina's arc. Yes, Microagressions are racism and the stuff her character experienced in the movie is terrible and would cause anyone to snap - however, financial inquality and limited opportunities in capitalism are a part of this racism and classism. Capitalism and racism are intertwined - they should have included the racism but not used it as a replacement for the monetary challenges. Free Education could erase a lot of inequality.

Fun Fact: In the book In The Heights: Finding Home, the screenwriter Quiara Alegria Hudes said that another reason they made Daniela and Carla a couple was because since Nina's mother was not a present character in the movie, they lost that relationship of a married couple, so they created a functional and happy married couple with Daniela and Carla. I love that they did that so so much. The movie was PHENOMENAL, even with the inevitable changes from the musical.

I still can't decide if I like Nina's new reasons for dropping out honestly. Like that kind of isolation and the effects on mental health through a particular traumatic experience (being searched) are fully valid but I also kind of liked that Nina's reasoning was more socioeconomic originally. People are cruel and that's harder to change but I feel like the original shines a light on a genuine problem we could be trying to fix.

this is what happens when $$$ peeps in Hollywood think they have bling bling a musical and make it look like a video game, cuz the kids wont come see it otherwise. Lin Manuel should have been allowed to direct it, as his Bway musical was flawless. This CGI shit and cutting characters from play killed it from me. (I mean dancing on upside down brownstones? and the lead running 100mph while hitting a high C) come on.

I loved the movie but I really missed Hundred of stories and Enough. I think they could've still put Hundred of stories without really saying that abuela Claudia won the lotto. Also Kevin's and Benny's relationship could've been very impactful in teh movie as it's something people often forget. And I couldn't care any less about Cuca, sadly she wasn't very likable for me but overall I love the movie!
reply

Personally I dont understand why people hate that Kevins racism towards Benny was taken away. In my opinion, I actually quite like it. It shows that just as theres racism between Latino and Black, it doesnt mean that healthy Latino and Black relationships/friendships/work relationships dont exist, because they do

I feel like this film losts it's Lin Manuel Miranda but John M Chu characteristics is represented in the vibrant vibe and it feels more like Mamma Mia and Crazy Rich Asians. But the casting is amazing, i love the casts. The only thing I miss is Camila. why it feels anticlimactic without Camila's numbers.

Im sorry but I didnt even notice Carla and Daniella were a couple. Yes Im aware theres the kissing in bed scene, but in my defense I saw and couldnt tell who the characters were and assumed they were extras. In the stage play o definitely shipped them lowkey, in this version they just seemed like coworkers

As someone who's never seen the original show on Broadway and didn't have an emotional background going into the movie, I loved it. However, I can understand how people who went into it wanting to see it just like on Broadway would be upset with the changes. As a stand alone movie, it's fantastic.

when they changed abuela's story during pacienca y fe for the cinematic effect, i couldnt stop crying. it wasnt a bad touch at all i was just so sad that abuela had to go TT the only other sad thing due to this change was not getting to hear Hundreds of Stories. i LOVE that song so much
reply

I love how they straight up admit that making Carla and Daniela lovers had literally nothing to do with the story. Just another example of Hollywood trying to turn everything gay
Also the fact that they made Nina leaving Stanford a racism thing.
So freaking woke, its a shame

reply

My main complaint is the way they changed blackout. It was supposed to be about Benny and Ninas climax, Sonny and Pete protecting the bodega, the closely knit harmonies. They kept some of the things I liked but I didnt like the replacement of Benny and Nina with Usnavi and Vanessa
reply

I'm kind of mad that they removed all the tension between Nina and her parents, and her arguments with Benny over his job. Even if they added the talk about racism and the undocumented, the show had more tension between the characters, so the movie is just not as interesting.

1: 42 Im not sure if the dorky 96, 000 tweak referenced in LMMs tweet is the Tiger Woods change, which I believe had become canon even before the movie came out. Seems more likely that this tweet is referring to the more flows than Obi-Wan Kenobi-yo lyric change.
reply

i think cutting out Ninas mom was absolutely unnecessary. they had to change so much just so that they could change it to she died when one of my favorite things in the musical is that relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Rosario which then leads to the amazing Enough
reply

It's been updated. I love the lyric changes especially in 96, 000. the singing is great. I do wish it was closer to the stage musical at times. Abuela's death crushed me in the film. In the musical, you don't see her death. Both are heartbreaking.
reply

I hated that Camila, Ninas mother, was cut out in the movie! The relationship between Nina and her father was really bland in the movie. Camilla was the glue, the problem solver, and worked along side Kevin. She was the true matriarch.
reply

I kinda wish they kept the reason why Nina quit school. I think there were great moments to show the racism and its complexities the latino community experiences. That being said, I get it. Those experiences are real and arent unrealistic.
reply

Also, the Washington Heights in this movie just doesn't feel like the low-rent neighborhood the opening number describes - the apartments look way too nice, and to be blunt, those streets look like the pigeons never shit in them.

I saw this gorgeous film a couple days ago. There were about fifteen of us in the movie theatre screen all dotted around. My heart broke for Sonny and I sobbed
It hurt worse because he's a child. There was nothing he could do

reply

Ive seen both the stage show when it was in the U. K. and the movie and honestly I live both for separate reasons, the movie is good and they were always going to have to change things for the movie to work
reply

I don't know why but I actually like seeing the hard-core musica fansl not like the movie. Their irritation is funny to me for some reason. I loved the movie a little more than the musical
reply

The change of placing for pasencia y fe changed how i felt about that song, i always akipped it but now i feel like i need to, its also my grandmas story and my grandpas and so many others
reply

yall gotta chill, an adaption can change quite a lot, take the mcu and comics, for example, however, i do agree that some songs, especially atencion and sunrise, should not have been cut-
reply

Cucas character is useless and does nothing to advance the plot or characters.
The one of two changes I can't deal with.
The other killing Nina's mom, that seemed useless.
