Top 10 BEST Songs to Audition With When I teach my Musical Theatre audition class, I always tell my students to do their research and audition with something that is in the same vein of the show or role that they are aiming for. Singing Im Just a Girl Who Caint Say No when auditioning for Cosette in Les Miserables is probably going to work against you. I discourage people from singing something from the show or the song that the character they want sings. If that character has only one big number (i. e. Mister Cellophane in Chicago) then unless youre incredibly good or incredibly bad, youll just be one of the dozen who sang that song. Singing The God Why Dont Love Me Blues from Follies shows that you understand Amos Hart. Also singing a song from the show can work against you if the creative team feels this is exactly how you want to perform this song and you might not be direct-able in the role. Directors feeling they might not be able to work with you is the number one reason for not getting cast, not lack of talent or experience.\r\n

-Dont bring Jason Robert brown into an audition, most accompanists cant handle it
-Strongest Suit is overdone to death outside of school
-Fine Fine Line is a downer, only use this for similar shows like Spelling Bee
-Happily Ever After is great if youre in high school
-Never do Man of La Mancha for an audition, its a meme and youll be made fun of
-Home is crazy overdone
-Killer Instinct is the better audition song from Bring it On

I love your videos. One thing I really hate about them is when you force some random song down our throat and ask if we like it. I came for the video not the lackluster song we have to slog through before we get to what we actually came for. I would rather not have the random song at all. Lets just get to the video we came for? or is that insane to get what we came for?

I'd love to add some suggestions: So Many People from Saturday Night, Safer from First Date: The Musical, Always True To You In My Fashion from Kiss Me Kate, I Love The Way from Something Rotten, I'm A Woman from Smokey Joe's Cafe, Never Fall In Love With An Elf from Elf: The Musical. And for the guys: I'm Alive from Next To Normal.

The very concept of this list is fundamentally flawed. Every single different performer could have a different best audition song. It depends on voice type, range, age, type, what show youre auditioning for, etc. Plus being on a list is automatically a con because directors dont want to hear the same songs over and over again.

Best songs to audition with that I have had auditioned with
Sandy- Grease
When youre good to Mama- Chicago
Good Morning Baltimore- HairSpray
The Wizard and I- Wicked
This is Me- Greatest Showman
Oh what a beautiful mornin-Oklahoma
Its a grand night for singing- State Fair

I'd like to suggest I Need To Know from Jekyll and Hyde for any tenors out there. It's far from the most well known song from the show but it doesn't have too much build (like this is the moment) or character shenanigans (like Alive or Confrontation. The range is roughly C#3 to G4

Loved that a male solo was number 1! Good choices all throughout I think, always happy to see Audra MacDonald, & Carol Burnett was a great surprise! My only downside was that this didn't show a clip of the extraordinary Linda Eder version of I, Don Quixote! It's SO GOOD!

Ok but if ya wanna show ya know character and wanna test your breathe control and speak singing, Watch What Happens from Newsies is perfect and extremely unexpected! Did it for theatre class and my teacher was stunned at the difficulty but enjoyment of it!

me and my friend have both auditioned with So Much Better from Legally Blonde on so many different occasions and let me tell you it is absolute GOLD when it comes to auditions, seeing as EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. we have gotten the parts we wanted

for past week i've been practicing auditioning for a school play with the opening number of Beauty And The Beast. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series inspired me, so when i saw Ashylnn on this thumbnail i instantly clicked

Theaters in my town should be opening up auditions within the next couple of months, so I'm looking for a good low baritone song that probably hasn't been done to death. I really wanna do Stars, but obvious issue is obvious. Lol
reply

I like a live play and I like a great song, but I don't like them together. I find musical theater laborious. I want to see and hear emotion, but I don't like it when that breaks out in song to carry a plot line.

1. Never Enough - Greatest Showman
2. Day by Day- Godspell
3. Kiss Today Goodbye - Chorus Line
4. Memory - Cats
5. Any song frome Le Miz
6. Guys & Dolls songs
- Ms. Dana/Artistic Director, M. A.

swap out Some Enchanted Evening with I Won't Send Roses from Mack & Mabel and take a look at Begin the Beguine or In the Still of the Night (both by Cole Porter) if you're going for something a little older
reply

As a baritone I can honestly say that Stars has been my go-to audition piece for years. unless I'm gunning for a particular part and have picked something special for the occasion. So, yeah, that checks.
reply

Many years ago I was in a local production of South Pacific. The gentleman who sang Some Enchanted Evening blew the roof off the theater every night. I still remember it with goosebumps.
reply

Glad they included classics like some enchanted evening and the street where you live. I wouldve loved if they also included Lost in the wilderness from Children of Eden.
reply

Anything but lonely, what does he want from me, The Last man in ja Life, the prologue top 'Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dreamcoat' - that Kind of songs I'd choose.
reply

I'm scared that Home and In My Dreams are gonna get more popular because I love singing them and I can nail both of them. I don't want them to get overrated
reply

I whole heartedly agree that you should NEVER do Impossible Dream. Even though it is very old school, it is just too done. And NEVER do All that Jazz.
reply

There are 100 lists of audition songs to avoid and 100 more lists of songs that are great to audition with and they have the same songs on them lol Ugh
reply

All That Jazz is super overdone. I still love using it for auditions! If I'm going to audition for a showgirl character I'll pick that song
reply

Empty Chairs from Les Miz is also a good song to show your range. I would suggest Stars for a mature actor and Empty Chairs for a younger one.
reply

I auditioned for RENT with Out Here On My Own from FAME and got cast. Used All That Jazz for the FANTASTIKS and got cast. Go figure.
reply

I auditioned with All That Jazz (I'm a cis boy with a tenor/basse voice) and I auditioned with this song and I got the part I wanted
reply

Stars? No, really, stars? Please do not bring this to an audition. Even modern castings still twitch when they hear the opening chords.
reply

How about Roses Turn from Gypsy. Im less keen on the pop style shows and Im not a dancer. Anything from Sunset Boulevard is also good.
