I agree with the Phantom, Carousel, and West Side Story picks. For the other seven a in the following order, I'd have gone with 1. Summertime - Porgy and Bess, 2. Ole Man River - Showboat. 3. Any of Stars/Bring Him Home/Empty Chairs at Empty Tables / On My Own/ A Little Fall of Rain/ I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miz, 4. Little Bird, Little Chavaleh or Sunrise Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof, 5. Memory from Cats, 6. With One Look or As If We Never Said Goodbye from Sunset Boulevard 7. Movie in My Mind from Miss Saigon, with Honorable Mentions to I'll Cover You from Rent, Loving You from Passion, Close Every Door from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Witch's Lament from Into the Woods

4. 5 year old me heard a tiny clip of Michael Crawford singing Music of the Night and I thought it was the most beautiful thing Id heard, literally stopped playing with my Polly Pockets and just stared off in a daze when I heard it, and that was stuck in my head until I actually discovered Phantom of the Opera when I was in 6th grade. Its still my favorite to this day.

Judi Dench in the Sondheim 80th was incredibly moving, even if it isn't the best sung version. Haunting. Quiet Up Town in Hamilton is notable because it is such a change a pace. I'm a LFC supporter so YNWA is also a very uplifting song. You missed one - Love Never Dies from Love Never Dies is beautiful and one of the highlights in the somewhat messy sequel to Phantom.

TW!
To clear somethings up, Alison Bechdel's father DID commit su1c1d3. Probably. Her father and mother had recently divorced, and he was depressed, and living alone on a farm. It's not confirmed, as Bechdel herself doesn't know. But she things he might have.
I love Fun Home! One of my favorite books, and definitely an amazing musical.

Barbara Streisand's version of Send In the Clowns is the version that really haunts me and it should have been higher. Memory should be on the list and high up on this list. I don't understand why it wasn't because it gets me every time. And I agree with previous comments that numerous songs from Les Mis could have been on here.

What More Can I Say and What Would I Do -Falsettos
Easy To Be Hard -Hair
I Miss the Mountains -Next To Normal
Pretty much everything in Spring Awakening (some highlights being The Song Of Purple Summer, I Believe, Mama Who Bore Me, and Word of Your Body)
Just a few I think deserve to be here

I havent seen anyone say this but All you wanna do from Six the Musical gives me chills every time I hear it, especially with Sam Paulys version live. The combination of the dark and heartbreaking lyrics, the insane vocals, and the sheer emotion and power Sam puts into it, its a true masterpiece
reply

Tell Me its not True from Blood Brothers, What I Did for Love, As Long as He Needs Me from Oliver!
She Used to be Mine from Waitress, and there are several to choose from in Next to Normal.
That being said, there are tons of great choices in the video and the comments.

Most of this list is rubbish compared with so many others, as people have said how can there be no mention of the beautiful songs in Les Mis. Probably the most well known of the songs listed in U. K. is You, ll Never Walk Alone, as it is the anthem for Liverpool football club.

I NEED more William Finn musicals on these lists.
What Would I do, Unlikely Lovers, and In Trousers (The Dream) all gave me chills and had me SOBBING.
If you dont know Falsettos or its lesser known prequel In Trousers, do yourself a huge favor and look them up

As a huge Phantom Phan, I am very happy that youre picked The Music of The Night as you number 1! Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again is very haunting, too! Especially the way Emmy Rossum sings it in the 2004 Film version of this incredible Broadway Musical!
reply

Stay alive reprise from Hamilton and so big/so small from Dear Evan Hansen literally have me sobbing so much. Especially at the end of the on Broadway performance of Stay Alive when Eliza screams just kills me. Then with so big/so small I have mommy issues.
reply

Sunrise, Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof, Old Man River from Showboat, Try to Remember from The Fantastics, and I Have Dreamed from The King and I should at least get honorable mentions. In fact, I would trade any one of these for numbers 9 and 5!
reply

Although I wouldn't call it Haunting, YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE gets me every time. choking up and even weeping.
You've done your homework. referring to Swan Lake and Beethoven. etc. that influenced Bernstein in SOMEWHERE.

reply

Such wonderful songs you picked. Ironically, the most haunting line in Losing My Mindis. you said you loved me, or were you just being kind? It Embodies ALL the insecurities and questions we have when an affair is over
reply

My friend from Buffalo New York, wrote the lyrics and sold them to someone in New York City into this day he gets a royalty. The original lyrics were taken from a poem, and the song is between two men. Send in the clowns
reply

Oh number three crushes me. Also, I had number two as a cover from Dropkick Murphys; never knew it was from a musical. Its easy to remember and remember in the hard times (if I remember to that is.
reply

No Old Man River from Showboat or On the Street Where You Live from My Fair Lady? Maybe do another of these with just classic musicals (Showboat, State Fair, My Fair Lady, Music Man, etc.

Close every door to me
Music of the Night
Pretty Women
Past the Point of no return
All I Ask of you

I think I dreamed a dream from Les Miserables should be here too. That songs is so heartbreaking bc we all see what all she lived through and how that killed her dream.
reply

You don't have If I Loved You, from Carousel, which is even more haunting and filled with longing than You'll Never Walk Alone. A classic which dwarves all the rest.
reply

somewhere just makes me break down. as much as i love every other song in west side story (Especially in the 2021 version) this song is just so heart wrenching
reply

How did you not include You Don't Know from Next to Normal? Or Waving Through a Window and/or You Will Be Found from Dear Evan Hansen? Very disappointing list.
reply

My top three favorites: Can't Help Lovin Dat Man from Show Boat, She Used to Be Mine from Waitress, and my all-time favorite, Summertime from Porgy and Bess.
reply

Very strange. 'Memories' from Cats only briefly mentioned, 'I Dream a Dream' from Les Miz & 'Don't Cry for me Argentina' from Evita not mentioned at all.
reply

There are multiple songs from Jekyll and Hyde that are more hauntingly beautiful than most anything on this list. Girls of the Night for example.
reply

Apart from almost anything from Les Mis, Miss Saigon and Hamilton:
You will be found - Dear Evan Hansen and The impossible dream - Man of La Mancha

reply

Somewhere always gives me the chills.
You'll never walk alone - another fantastic under rated song.
And who could argue with Liza Minellie

reply

You really missed the boat on this one. Mama. Look Sharp will leave you in tears and is the most hauntingly beautiful tune with words that sting.
reply

more runners-up from Old Broadway: Ol' Man River, Some Enchanted Evening, This Nearly Was Mine, Goodnight, My Someone, Climb Every Mountain
