I'm gonna tread very lightly here because it is an issue that may ruffle feathers. The culture of TV shows overall has gone straight down the toilet as time has gone on. Unfortunately, this seems to be even more prevalent in the black community and entertainment that is crafted more specifically to them. With shows like Fresh Prince, The Jeffersons, All in the Family, Family Matters, I could go on and on. They portrayed great aspects that every person black or white should aspire to be to live a happy, successful life. As well as tackling issues that are more specific to them, but they never seemed to want the characters to act the victim because of it. It told them to always rise above it. Now compare that to modern TV that is catered to the black community, it seems to focus more on stereotyped characters and the more negative aspects of their culture rather than the positive ones. The Boondocks, one of the greatest satires of black culture ever depicted repeatedly, tried to point this out with McGruders extreme dislike of BET and what he believed it was doing to black culture.

I think the point of WIll taking the gun away from Carlton was missed. Will walked a walk that Carlton hadn't yet and knows that carrying a gun is a great responsibility. He knew the moment they encountered that robber that Carlton wasn't ready then, and he certainly wasn't in the right state of mind to be ready now. If Will hadn't stopped Carlton, he would have set himself up to pull the weapon in a way that would have ruined a huge chunk of his life likely through a mistake in practicing self-defense as the law cares nothing for misunderstandings. Getting a firearm was not a bad decision in itself, but getting one immediately when you are anxious after an encounter just showed that Carlton was just not ready to carry that responsibility, especially at that time.

The gun one, to this day, doesn't make any sense to me. Carlton is right. There is nothing wrong with wanting to protect yourself. If carlton got proper guidance, shooting and self defense, the chances of this scenario to happen again would drop, not necessarily because he was ready to bust some mofos, but because he was going to get smarter and more aware of his surroundings.
Other than that, disarming carlton didn't solve anything. Will still in bed, the mugger is still on the loose and the justice system 's still flawed. If there were no guns around, the mugger would use a knife, a rock, even his own fists (yes, unarmed mugging exists, especially in third world countries)

My mother abandoned me for the man she cheated on my father with, so now every time I see that scene of Lou abandoning Will again I always just breakdown too because I've asked the similar question to my dad more then once. And yes I know the situations are different (being a father not a mother) but at the same time it's not parents, regardless of gender, can and do abandon their children and I think every child who has ever had to go through that relates to that scene and breaks down every time because in some shape or form we've all asked that question either mentally thinking it or actually saying it we have all asked it

Carlton really hit home when you didn't want to go to the hospital after the heart attack. But, I admit that scene with Will and his father. How come he doesn't want me man. That one sentence made me cry.
And, I'm never the type to cry watching anything. Number 3 the father should have been Number 1. I love that episode Black History. The Gun issue was very serious. But, that should have been Number 2.

And since then the black skin Americans lost it. This is how i grew up. I learnt about life. About tough decisions. About being a woman or being a man. That skin color not matter and so.
I am not a mother. But for some unknown reason kids that were grew up with that everyone are human ideology have brats that thing that all people owe them something

You cut out a little about #10, where Carlton tells the frat leader how dare they not take Will, since Will told Carlton he didn't get in in an attempt to leave. Then the dumbass Top Dog tells him it is Carlton they don't want because he is a sell out and Carlton defends himself. He should've also mentioned the time he was stopped with Will.

I'm surprised the dad one wasn't #1.
I've watched that episode 100 times and I still get choked up.
Although my own father was around in my life, there were plenty of times where I felt like he never wanted me.
The fraternity episode, that was the most real and the most G Carlton got.

0: 36 as a black artist I go through that alot and its sad. It's bad enough I run into racism daily, but to be made fun of by my own black community because I am into arts and science? Like Uncle Phil said, why do we keep doing this to ourselves?

the one with his father really got me. my father wasnt even there for my birth and i never even saw him until i was 12. he never said happy birthday to me until i turned 17. hes never gotten me a birthday gift or a christmas gift. he was never there.

Will Smith said that James Avery was 6'4 and 300 pound's, but he once reached 350 pound's, went on a diet and got down to 230-250 pound's, but sadly he didn't stop smoking, the actress who played Hilary Banks, said that she warned him.

The will getting shot episode was great, but i gotta admit they just cut that one off at the end like a knife in butter.
Next episode Cartlon is all funny and all again after just handing over his gun with an angry face.

Just because issues like these are shown on TV in the way they are does not mean REALITY is like that. I don't know of anyone who hasn't bought a gun for protection after being robbed and fearing for his/her life.

its sad how jay is known not for his work but wills so he would be nothing without will well not nothing he would do something but we wouldnt know about him he needs to snap out of it and stop liveing in dad shadow

The gun ownership one is pretty important. Attend a class, read up on laws, look at court cases with self-defense shootings. It's a very complex situation and gun ownership is a huge responsibility.

Good, simple, yet solid, substantive stories with strong emotional impact. I'm tellin you, these shows have a feel to them that can't be touched by a lot of these shows nowadays.
reply

This is why this is one of the greatest shows ever, I'm privileged to have lived during the time this show originally aired. RIP James Avery, the father alot of us wish we had.
reply

Ok all that but with the understanding carlton is a coon like most of his issues stem from that or his idea that he is the best type of black and all others are beneath him
reply

Comedy shows tend to have the best dramatic moments. Mostly because you watch for laughs, but when it gets serious(if handled correctly) you will always remember it.
reply

10 showed me how divided our people are from the bottom to the top and it's sad tbh especially when we all as people want the same goals in life and can't see it
reply

It's funny how Will showed antagonism toward his friend for his prejudice against Carlton, when he did exactly the same thing to Uncle Phil in the pilot.
reply

I remember the drink driving episode as childm I'm 33 and no duis. I swear id rather sleep where ever if there's no lift before hopping in a car
reply

So many issues in this show took on that effects every race. I grew up watching this show and absolutely loved and still love this show.
reply

Who ever played wills mother, she is so oooooooooo annoying and terrible actor! You can tell when she is waiting for her line!
reply

So great to be born in the era of these types of shows, my kids dont know anything about how these shows really helped in many ways
reply

Fresh Prince was great at tackling difficult social issues, WITHOUT coming off as preachy and lecture'y. Good on them.
reply

There are no issues around control! GUN CONTORL OF ANY KIND IS COMPLETELY UNCONSTITUTIONAL! THE HWOLE ISSUE IS MENTAL HEALTH!
reply

The abandoment scene spoke to me more but gotta say yeah the gun violence episode was good as well they would be my top two
reply

Could have also added when Hilary was dealing with the grief after losing Trevor who she was going to marry.
reply
