I stopped listening after I heard the term problematic this word has 1 place, describing a potential problem in some sort of engineering dilemma. Past that it just means that the following subject might offend someone who's ego is so brittle any type offense real or most often imagined that they will crumble down into a shaking sobbing little ball on the floor. If I was a screen writer today I would just stop writing female characters all together because noatter what you do they will look for some way to be offended. It's sad honestly because that is exactly what these people(more and more I feel like they are in reality just bots on twitter) need in life. You need to learn how to deal with things that may offend you. If you are so soft that fictional characters offend you, become a hermit with no tv and no books or magazine. Get some cats and/or dogs and shun humanity because you are incapable of living in a free society. I blame the colleges that indoctrinated these people instead of educating them. You were taught what to think when you should have been taught how to think.

Personally, I want romance involving female and male characters to be de-emphasized because it usually screws over the womans character. Women are more than love interests; their value shouldnt depend on how much they benefit a man.
Also, I want more diverse female characters. I feel that women, a lot of the time, are made to be supposedly desirable, whether it be physically, as a love interest, etc. before being put on screen, which limits how theyre written. Thus you dont really see as many flawed, powerful, evil, and unattractive women as you do men in media (I also see this a lot in anime and it annoys me so much.

The Smurfette Principle -- only one woman among a multitude of male principal characters.
Even if some iconic films employed it (e. g. all the Star Wars films up to the sequel trilogy; every Indiana Jones movie, this is a trope whose time has passed, IMO. If a movie has only one major female character, whether the writers intend this or not, people are going to see this character as somehow representative of Women in General, and they're going to lay a bundle of unfair expectations at her feet. Having more than one frees female characters from the burden of being seen as the Chick.

Another really annoying stereotype is that women should not age. I mean, sometimes men are said to get even hotter when they begin getting grey hair, and women are continuously under pressure regarding things like wrinkles and that very grey hair. Hello! Those are natural things, and they should not be ashamed of! The thing that women should dress according to their age is another pain in the neck (like only girls under 30 can wear mini skirts. If this or that garment fits you, why not?

I can think of another female stereotype in movies and tv shows that I believe needs to stop and that's female characters who either slap or punch a male character for comedic effect. I see this happen a lot of movies and tv shows when the male character is either portrayed as not very bright or just a complete douchebag. It gives the wrong message to young girls that they should use violence against men if they are disrespectful. Swap the genders around and it won't be considered funny at all.

Also many of the Black female character tropes need to die too. The sassy, and ghetto black woman, the angry black woman, the gilded black single mother, the black woman thats been beaten down by love and a made into damsel in distress to a good black man or white man. The Black woman side chick or the long suffering wife with no identity but her husbands. The black woman made to believe her career is affecting her love life, the black woman/sidekick whose the best friend and nothing more.

Alright say there's a movie. It starts off in a library, male lead who I'm naming Hunter is reading a book female who I will be naming Lizzie walks up to bookshelf behind him and grabs a book then she asks if she can sit next to him Hunter agrees and asks her to read silently they both read for some fifteen minutes until they hear the P. A. attention. The Library will be closing in ten minutes Hunter gets up so does Lizzie and then the movie ends
Do see how boring that was?

Were any movies used here current?
Stereotypes or no, they were great movies. Sometimes they made fun of these tropes themselves. Its so funny how we can wound up about these things but theyre still entertaining and classic. I think we should find some new stories, sure. Not always fall back on the same old same old. But thats to make things diverse and interesting. Not bc Im put off or think they should stop classic cliches.

I agree with most of these except for the idea of marriage and men needing women and women needing men. Most women AND men are happier married or at least in a long term committed relationship (aka marriage. There's a reason women today rate themselves as less happy then women 30+ years ago when the marriage rate was happier. I think there is also a reason men these days are generally more childish and pathetic as well.

one trope I hate is when they make the female lead tomboyish or nerdy and show her in a good light and how everyone loves them and takes them seriously, while any other girl that wears dresses or shows the slightest bit of feminity is always deemed as 'mean girls' or fake or bad just bc they wear girly clothes, the only female lead I kind think of with girly style is Elle from legally blonde

Women: we need more more women in movies
Also Women: No not like that. Or that. Or that. Or that.
Look there are stereotypes of every kind of person in movies. Movies can't spend 90% of its screen time trying to show every part of a person. They stick to types of people to bring diversity. If they don't then we end up with more movies like 355 or the new Charly's Engels.

Its the female acting in these ways to accommodate the guy they are after. Its degrading for all they endure to prove that love exists or not. All these suck and the portrayals only add to the narrative of what is expected and the standard for a woman but never the same recourse on the other end. Stop the sad narrative women be strong and liable on theor own in theor own right.

My experience of the world is a lot like movies. People are looking for a target so they can bully you the fact is stereotypes exist and people often have these reactions to them. An example is many people do not find plus size people attractive it's not universal but the majority of men will go for a thinner girl and many people are really mean to people overweight.

I'm surprised that they didn't mention the cool girl trope. The girl that's quote/unquote not like other girls because she likes things that are usually liked by men like sports, cars, video games, hard liquor, cigar-smoking, action films, etc, and can eat anything she wants i. e. fast food and junk food and still look effortlessly hot. This one is super annoying.

my mom is a married woman and mother of 3 girls. She works not because we need that money, but because she wants to have a career, she got a master's and she takes care of us more than anything. My father works more and he helps her with food and cleaning. When my friends find out about this, they call it 'weird'

If there's one stereotype that I don't like about female characters is those who are labeled as dumb blondes. Like what is it with people in movies and shows and depicting some loving female characters having low IQ and with a blonde hair. I mean that kinda bothers way too badly and it's just unfair.

I wanted to go into this hating the video? But every point has a clip from a movie that almost argues the exact opposite of the trope their trying to get across through satirical means and I find that hilarious.
Big Fat Greek Wedding, Ms. Congeniality, How to Be Single as examples

This list comes off as confused. I agree with some of the points, but somehow I feel like lists like these are just trying to control and restrict women even more. Female characters already get so little exposure but so much criticism, do we really need a list like this to pile on?

The Manic Pixie Dream Girl stereotype works better as a hallucination, ghost, imaginary friend, great gazoo, split personality, or spirit guide that only her boyfriend can see. Scarlite from the Flemish movie Ben X was a perfect example of a good Manic Pixie Dream Girl stereotype.

In Grease, Sandy does not do that ridiculous leather jacket makeover to please John Travolta. She was getting rid of her poodle skirt pure good girlness that was even less authentic. That was not a good example of a girl who changes herself to please a man.

What about the Mary Sue type? I hate that trope so much! Real women arent perfect and have no flaws, but Hollywood loves to make it seem that those type of women can do anything to the point where they are just boring and emotionless people.

I don't know how I feel about this list. You get rid of these stereotypes, what type or kind of women are left? You don't know or have come across some women that embody these characteristics? Stereotypes usually have some truth in them.

if the villain is a woman, she has to have a back story as to why shes bad. plenty of male villains dont need backstories as to why theyre bad. Id love to see a villain who is evil just because she wants to be evil.

The Delicate Rose /Damsel in Distress. To where she's either physically or mentally feeble that everyone does the actions for her instead of her doing them herself. It's not as common now. but it's still there
