I think my order:
Steve Martin
2022
The original.
The steve martin version is smart and witty and is not exposition heavy. You can put the pieces together. I also liked the chemistry between him and diane keaton.
I didnt find the 2022 version as funny, but it was still entertaining. I liked the diversity especially how they subverted the ex-wife being jealous of the new young woman the husband marries trope. I love how they got along and helped with the kid instead of being petty with each other.
I also liked the message of how you can embrace traditions in different ways. The wedding dress is based on their mothers adding tradition to the modernity. Also, Sofias job reflects what her dad tried to teach them repeatedly.
While I did not agree with every tradition that the parents were bringing to the wedding, I still felt bad for them because almost every tradition was being rejected by the kids. Not all of them were backwards or bad.
I felt the original was just narration even for the time period it was set in. I did not get to know the the other characters, just the father and his constant thoughts. Making it sound worse than it was, but I wish we were able to skip some of the narration and see the dynamics being set up.

The 1991 version will always hold a special place in my heart. I was already a wife and Mommy to 3 kids by then. But my little sister was actually the bride that year. We weren't aware of the Spencer Tracy Elizabeth Taylor version. But watched it on TV then went to the video store and picked up 1991. My poor Dad lost my twin brother and myself to marriages in 1986 and my youngest sister in 1991 and our baby brother in 1994. Along with 2 older siblings years earlier and 2 that never got married. That was a expensive time for him. And that wasn't even counting the gaggle of grandchildren being born. I'm gonna watch 2022 tonight.

I like the Steve Martin version. The title of the movie should reflect the theme of the movie. The Remake wasnt reflective of the film at all. It should have been called something else. Why can people just stop using the same film titles to try and grab fans of the original movies? I like both the version with Spencer Tracy and the remake with Steve Martin. I do like Andy Garcias movie but the title is misleading. I cant relate to the characters. There is nothing wrong with making culturally diverse movies. Dont be afraid to give them appropriate titles to go with the new them. Maybe. Wedding Planning.

I haven't watched the new one yet, but I doubt that anyone can beat Martin Short'S Fronk. Every version of this movie, be it the old one with Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor or the newer versions, all of them a mirrors of the time they were made. I loved the black/white one and when the Steve Martin one came out I was reluctant, but it was actually very entertaining. I'm curious on how I will like the 2022 FotB.

Changing an all white cast with an all Hispanic one isn't diversity. It's the same thing. It's just the trend of demonize white people. Now if it was something like Modern family with many different nationalities and colors. That would be diversity. This is just just an unfunny PC needless remake for the extreme woke type. Also the 2022 is a drama. I see no comedy in this. Just PC melodrama.

Honestly I prefer the 1991 one because it made me closer with my dad. I think it captured the essences of unconditional love as well as having to let go of your child because they are ready to fly now without you. The new one did nothing for me and that's even with me being Spanish as well, The characters in the 2022 felt so hard to connect to compared to 1991

I loved both. They each had their own style and flare, and being a kid of the '90s this movie was fun for the time. I do think the new movie is more relatable and not necessarily in wealth status but the family dynamics and traditions that the '90s version lacked. The '90s version was also just too primp and proper as opposed to just being real and relatable.

You are taking about rational reasons but dont forget the charm MsMojo, the charm. 1991's version has so much of it, the story is just about a dad who loves desperately his daughter, and you laugh about it, scream about it but at the end you cant help yourself to be moved by the strength of this love and wish you had-have one like that

Does everything have to be based oh its not culturally diverse? Cant we just enjoy the movies as they
are? Arent movies supposed to be an escape with a little realism? Everything has to be compared and not as good as the original because we are so much more enlightened. This is why nobody watches the newer movies.

I feel the 2022 movie was unneeded and just added things for because we have a large budget and extra things to seem different. The storyline about the sister, divorce and cultural traditions poorly represented like capulets and the Montagues. 1991 version was about the relationship between a father and his daughter.

I love Gloria Estefan and Andy Garcia. However, nothing beats the 90s version. Steve Martin is just perfect in that movie.
Oh, and the reason why Steve Martins character has more screen time is because, hello, the movie is called the FATHER of the bride. Not the father of the bride and all the offended ones.

I love the 1991 version, it was only this year I discovered it was a remake and then I saw the 1950 version with Elizabeth Taylor and Spencer Tracy and it was just as wonderful. Itll be interesting seeing the 2022 version with a cultural and serious twist, Im assuming with no comedy streak either.

I absolutely adore the Steve Martin version, but this new remake was also super cute.
Between the millennial-isms and the nods to two beautiful POC cultures, it was a lovely update I enjoyed watching.
I guess now I have to work and find where to watch the OG version with Liz Taylor.

I don't think that I will like the 2022 version, I don't feel like hearing all of that spanish, I can't understand it. I want to watch a movie straight though without a language barrier. I get tired of pressing 1 for English as it is. Leave movies alone, all of these remakes are not always good

I liked the new version. Not all of these updated movies are successfully meaningfully transitioned to something more modern and current, but I think this one did a great job. I loved how they contrasted the Cuban-American clash with the Mexican international background. Great choices.

The 3rd installment of this movie was trying so hard to be diverse that it became a different movie with a different flavor. They should have just given the 3rd version a different title and taken it in that direction. That said, there is nothing wrong with a movie about either culture.

I love the 1991 version! I grew up with it but the 2022 version I love it slightly more because the entire cast of the new version is reminiscent of my family. Andy Garcias character reminds me of my dad actually and Gloria Estefan was incredible and she kind of reminds me of my mom.

I love the 1991 version! Steve Martin and Martin Short! Love them! I havent seen the latest but I will. I love that theyve made it with a diverse cast and storyline. When you think about it, this basic storyline can be retold with every culture. And thats just great!

When I heard they were making a new version I was hoping it was a sequel to the one from 1991. I had figured it could be either of the girls born during Father of the Bride 2. Hard to believe they are old enough to get married but they are.

Love the diversity but I'll love the 90s versions till I die. There's still something enchanting about the American dream even though it's fiction. We don't always need real life in movies we deal with it every day

It's very clear which version MsMojo prefers. This comparison is pretty lopsided. I personally prefer the 1991 version. While I like the updated take as a concept, I found it to be joyless, whereas the 1991 was big hearted.

Definitely the 1991 version. It was hilarious and even if the characters didn't have the same depth as the 2022. The 1991 will forever be first in my heart! Fronk was the best character in the movie.

I loved the 1991 movie, but this latest 2022 version absolutely stole my heart. As you said, they fleshed out all of the characters better, and gave the FoB clearer motivation.
