I read the book and watched the movie. Major differences between the two. I thought the book was better, in my opinion. In the book, they put much emphasis on her childhood, half of the book is about her childhood. Some major differences i noticed were:
In the book, Tate and Kya have some of there lessons in the shack that was Kyas dads. Its not her home and thats also where she hid from Chase after he attacked her. In the movie, there is no mention of the shack.
In the book, Kyas dad takes her out to eat once in her life. In the movie, there is no mention of that outing out to eat.
In the book, Tate does come back on forth of July and sees Kya from a distance and decides to head back to the cove. In the movie, they say he doesnt come at all until after college.
In the book they never mentioned Kya and Chase ever going up to the tower where he died. In the movie, Chase brings Kya to the tower and they show the the gap where Chase had fell.
In the book Kya comes to Tates boat and thats where Tate sees the bruises on her face and gives her his hat. In the movie, he sees her bruise at night and gives the hat.
In the book Tates dad died and in the movie Jumpin dies.
In the book, after Kya dies, Tate finds the poem and necklace in the floorboard in the kitchen. In the movie, its in a book.
Also, in the movie there was no emphasis on the nail polish Barely Pink
There is plenty of more differences but I feel like these are major ones that should have been shown in the movie.

I never heard of this movie and one night I was looking for something to watch on Netflix and I watched the trailer and thought wow. this looks interesting. well. I watched it three times already. . absolutely love this movie. Now looking at this video. of course the books are always more detailed no matter what. . if you're going to read the book and then watch the movie. there's always going to be that disappointment of what was in the book that was left out. but never having read the book. .it doesn't matter about all the incidentals left out. this movie has so much Beauty with nature. emotions. Abandonment. love. Independence. artistry. and fearlessness. great movie!

Honestly, people are so picky because the film hit theaters. If he was on Netflix, hardly anyone would pick on because Netflix works as it wants, without looking what people say. The problem arises when a book written by a 70-year-old biology where we have every kind of dirt interwoven with beautiful words turns into a movie where the main role is played by actors and the entire cast (although I love Daisy) looks like pictures. The book is heavy, full of difficult moments and words, and the movie, like cotton candy, talks about romance instead of loneliness.

I understand that movie adaptations Typically don't live up to their respective book, but this was a very hollowed out version of an adaptation. as good as the production value and acting was, it for the most part felt empty. some important things were left out but the movie was still almost 2hrs so it's hard to say what shouldve been added that would've improved it but not made the movie too Long. More of the bond w/her mom & siblings would've been nice. Was Chase's wife (was it confirmed they were married in the movie? Either way) even in the courtroom?

I read the book several years ago and loved it. Watched the movie recently. and liked it so much I watched it again! Loved their choice of New Orleans for filming. The actors did an amazing job of bringing the characters to life. The movie improved the book in bringing her lawyer character to life. Loved everyone except Chase of coarse. In 2 hrs Reese and director did a brilliant job bringing this stunning book to life. BTW the movie made me want to re-read the end of the book. Well done!

I felt the movie was a little too fast paced and felt that it jumped to the trial and trial too quickly, before people who haven't read the book know much about Kya, Chase and what's going on. It brushes over all the evidence leading to the arrest in two minutes. In the book instead of bouncing back and forth to the trial, it does so with the investigation, so by the time Kya is arrested you already know about her relationship with Chase, his engagement and the assault.

Obviously, the film was visually very beautiful, something which a book will always lack. The book naturally has a lot of insight into Kyas thoughts that you cant do in a film. I actually prefer the chronology of the film. My recommendation: Watch the film first, and then read the book. That way you will have all that beautiful marsh scenery in your minds eye when you are reading, and you will understand her much better at the end of the book.

I was really disappointed with the casting/costuming for kya. I had envisioned her to be more exotic and wild looking with her jet black hair and time living in nature. She had such stylish clothing and hair for someone roughing it in the wild. I just couldnt give it a chance after the first few minutes. I basically fast forwarded through scenes. But it does make me want to go back and reread the book!

I didnt know nothing about this book until my niece played with my phone n accidentally order this book. it was during the locked down. and my goodness! Im not a book person but this books has everything! Emotions, anger, love, betrayal and wholesome! I seen the movie and it was good but the book? Im pretty sure Im gonna be a bookworm for Ive look for more book similar to this book lol!

Why is no one talking about the scene after kya and the lawyer are talking in the cell about her taking the stand. And it shows a flash back of the lawyer walking around the town the night kya was supposed to be in Greenville and looks over and sees her in the green dress sitting at a bench talking to someone! I feel like that is the biggest scene in the whole movie to put the pieces together!

Obviously, I prefer the book version to the movie but I think the film adaptions was still very well done. Yes, details were changed or left out but the feeling was still there. We were able to empathize with Kya and her plight, and not feel A THING when Chase is dead. I would have liked Jumpin' and Maybelle's part in her upbringing explored more. I still recommend everyone to watch it.

I am so tired of the old film is different than books so we have to make these changes nonsense. No you do not. Film the damn story and stop screwing around with the source material. It's an excuse that, for some unknown reason, people just accept and i, for one, am sick of it. It's been proven that people will sit through 4 hour movies. Tell the story the author intended.

Have you guys ever noticed how women things are always left out of the movies? Its so unusual to seem some character getting her period, or having a first time on her point of view, or dealing with puberty the way girls do IN REAL LIFE. But with male characters, its always so open and clean everything that happens. Why women are always silenced about these stuff?

I think that the movie did a good job of staying true to the book. I mean they only had 2 hours to tell the whole story so they did a good job. The only thing I really wish they didnt cut short was Jodie and Kya reuniting. It was too quick he came and went and all the things about the paintings ma did and Jodie brought were left out

Anyone, tell me how in the book did the girl know how to meet the guy on the tower-top to kill him.
She'd been living in isolation and had no interaction with anyone (particularly the boy she kills, but then out of nowhere she knows he's going to be on top of the tower for her to kill him. How?

the movie was phenomenal! I can't wait to see it again. Obviously, details will be left out from the book to fit into a two-hour film, but what they did was as beautiful and as accurate to the book as they could have gotten.

You do understand if the movie had kept in all the details you are whining about it would have been four hours long. I LOVED the book and the film. But the details you are complaining about are just silly.

The book was far superior, and while I liked the movie, it just felt weak by comparison, and some aspects wouldn't make sense unless you read the book. Daisy definitely gave the role of Kya aplomb, though!

At least half the items on this list will be invalidated when the 3 hour [rumored length] Director's Cut is released. For move that was only 125 minutes, they got quite a bit of the story in there.
