WHO didn't know that the films weren't remakes? Having the same title is sometimes a clue; while there might be some excuse for not being familiar with an original made in a foreign language that doesn't get shown much on English language TV (INFERNAL AFFAIRS did get some showings, at least in Britain, which was why THE DEPARTED was such a comedown, how many didn't know about the 'original' THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (there was a DeMille silent version? Or the original SCARFACE?

Personally, I don't consider The Prince of Egypt as a remake of The Ten Commandments. Nefretiri, Joshua, Lilia, and some other characters aren't in the movie. The Prince of Egypt is mostly another adaptation of The Book of Exodus that mainly focuses on the relationship of the brothers, and doesn't include the Nefretiri love story that Ten Commandments had. The 1956 film is really a remake of the 1923 film which both had the same director, Cecil B. DeMille.

Here are some other classics that are remakes:
The Maltese Falcon (1941) with Humphrey Bogart -- it's the third movie version of the novel
Frankenstein (1931) with Boris Karloff -- it's (at least) the second film version of the novel
The Birdcage (1996) with Robin Williams -- it's a remake of La Cage Aux Folles from the 70's

Love Don't Cost A Thing (2003) starring Nick Cannon, Christina Milan, and Steve Harvey.
Based on a coming of age Teen Romance Comedy, Can't Buy Me Love (1987) follows the premise about an Academic Nerd who makes a deal with the most popular cheerleader in school to be his girlfriend.

Personally, I don't think Prince of Egypt is truly a remake as the story has existed for thousands of years. The stuff like the burning bush and the parting of the red sea are the 2 most important parts of the story besides the plagues. No homage to a movie but more like biblical fact.

Kind of thought You've Got Mail would have been honorable mention as it's a remake of the 1940 Shop Around the Corner.
Also, there are So Many Freaky Friday remakes by now. it should not be on this list- it should be on a list of Movies they need to Stop remaking. lol.

Victor/Victoria, with Julie Andrews, was a remake of a German film Victor und Victoria. The Birdcage, with Robin Williams, was a remake of La Cage Au Folles, a French movie. And The Bachelor was a remake of Seven Chances, with Buster Keaton

The remakes: Three Men and a Baby, Prince of Egypt, Anastasia, Freaky Friday (I did see both the 70s and 90s versions; plus the sequels on the 70s one) The Wizard of Oz, Flubber, I Am Legend, and Cheaper by the Dozen.

i like when a remake is better than the original. they have the technology, time for improvements, change narrative for modern audience, make call backs, etc. but if they can't make it on par, no need for remakes.
reply

I had no idea that Meet The Parents was a remake. That movie is so funny. Sound Of Music is one of my favorites too. I didnt know that was a remake but I was aware that it was based Maria Von Trapps memoirs.
reply

Surprise The Birdcage was not mentioned. Other Hollywood remakes, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Swedish/German version is much better) or The Guilty (an almost 1to1 version of the Danish original)

So many remakes:
_Freaky Friday_
_Father of the Bride_
_Flubber_
_Herbie the Love Bug_
_Doctor Doolittle_
_The Nutty Professor_
_The Wizard of Oz_
etc. etc. etc.

Great list but, being a film buff, I already knew that all of those were remakes.
Maybe the list should instead be titled Remakes that overshadowed their predecessor. Just an idea.

reply

There is also a 1996 English-German movie named Beyond Silence, which first depicts of the journey of CODA which apparently overlaps with the two films you mentioned in this video.
reply

I might have given Steve Martin in Father of the Bride an honorable mention. It and the 50s version have star studded casts as does the Gloria Estefan remake too actually!
reply

I watched the original little shop of horrors last month I really enjoyed it but like the remake too
Its a tough choice though the songs probably win out

reply

when a stranger calls, from 2006 is a reboot from the movie from the 70's, and the 1993 made for tv movie sequel, stars carol kane and charles durning.
reply

Youve Got Mail! Which was based off a Hungarian play but had been previously made into two movies Shop Around the Corner and In the Good Old Summertime
reply

Awesome! I have been talking about Yul Brynner's three films of 1956 The Ten Commandments, Anastasia and The King And I all got animated remakes.
reply

There is also Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street was a 1936 UK non musical version film that Stephen Sondheim adapted for the stage.
reply

I am Legend is technically a remake of a remake, the book has 3 adaptations in total, the first one was Last Man On Earth staring Vincent Price
reply

I knew Scarface was a remake, never saw the original movie made in 1932. Im positive the 1932 movie is not as good as the one from 1983.
reply

the 1932 version has an X in the background for everyone that died. Scorsese used that technique in the Departed if you look closely.
reply

Don't think they mentioned benhur. Like the departed it was another remake that that swept the academy awards including best picture.
reply

What about Sabrina the 1994 version with Harrison Ford Greg kinnear and of course the Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn version
reply

FYI, The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz aren't remakes. They're simply another adaptations of the same source material.
reply

What about Ocean's 11? The George Clooney version can't hold a candle to the original starring Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack.
reply

Infernal affairs(the original) is waaaaay better than the Departed, and I saw the departed first thinking it was the original.
reply

The Ten Commandments is a great movie and I loved how they animated it so children could enjoy such a wonderful story.
reply

Not even a mention for The Birdcage and Heat? I was expecting The Departed to be on here but I didnt think of Scarface.
