I grew up in the 80s and graduated from high school in 1986. I know the movie Grease from 1978, very well. I never saw the second Grease movie. To this day I have never seen it, and I dont know anyone who ever has. The movie Xanadu is brought up by todays young people to be such a great movie, but it was a flop in its day, and it is critically bashed to this today, and for good reason. todays young people thank the 80s was so great and everything about that decade was so great. Most of the things young people today think were so great about that time. Were so lame to most of us at that time.

Two really bizarre mistakes in the Xanadu sequence of this video. It was not helmed by Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly because helmed by means 'directed by', not starring. It was helmed by Robert Greenwald. And no-one in the film wears rollerblades. Xanadu was released in 1980, three years before the first rollerblades went on sale. It's really obvious that everyone in the film is wearing roller skates.

I love all the movies with dance scenes from the 80s, but looking at this, I remember dancers from the 30s like Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly and Ginger Rogers.
Donald O'Connor's performance in Singin' in the Rain, Make 'Em Laugh is wonderful, not only because of his artistic ability, but also because at that time, the scenes were uncut as well

So MsMojo doesn't know Rollerblades from roller skates, because those weren't Rollerblades in Xanadu. They were roller skates. What's more, Rollerblades, while they existed in the 80s (and before, they didn't kick off as a fad until the early 90s, thus making that particular comment not just a malapropism but also anachronistic.

Hey another mention: The Running Man - where the ICS Running Man show starts and those Paula Abdul Dancers are performing the intro for the Show. The thing is I always thought that was one of the best 80s uplifting music pieces ever written and then combined with the Dancers it just looks fantastic.

I can only agree with Dirty Dancing, Fame, White Nights and Flashdance. Gregory Hines was an unbelievable dancer and the dancer who did the dancing for Jennifer Beals' character in Flashdsnce, but never got credit, was great. And then there is the incomparable Cynthia Rhodes- phenomenal!

The first four years of the 1980s were great years to be in high school! I saw every one of these movies in the theatersome a bunch of times. I mustve gone to see Xanadu 8-10 times. I saw Footloose multiple times in the theater, too. The soundtracks were all phenomenal.

Great number 1 pick. I still think Breakin should have actually been on the list. Either one of the battles, the broom scene or the final audition. It's such an important film when I think of my 80's upbringing. I still adore Breakin so much. RIP Ozone.

ahhhh im a little too young to experience fame and dirty dancing when they originally came out, but they DEFinitely made impressions on me. love giving credit where it's due.

Yeah, Dirty Dancing-I happened to know one of the male dancers--but Patrick Swayze-today, yesterday, tomorrow and always. Good for ALL of them-Jennifer was so good!

For the most part I agreed with your picks. I did think you needed to go a bit farther with the first Grease to kinda of give a little bit more of a background on it.

UMMM Footloose should have been #1. One of my favorite dance movies and without fail I have to get up and dance during that prom scene.

Look up Gregory Hine's beautiful dance tribute for the legendary Sammy Davis Jr. He was my crush for sure back then. Gone too soon.

Flash dance was the only one that was dance in her audition of what a feeling, but the rest was not one of the best dancing

I turned 20 in October 1980, what a time to move into young adulthood. Taking the metro north into Manhattan, long time ago.

I could never figure out how a town that banned dancing ended up with so many clearly professional dancers. Hmmmm.
reply

Just show the dances and cut the chit chat, it's interruptive. I turned it on to see dance not listen to blather.

Who compiled this list? Where is Dirty Dancing? Where is Saturday Night Fever?
