These casting decisions MADE these biopics. For this list, well be looking at actors who were the absolute perfect choice to play the onscreen versions of real-life people. Our countdown includes Capote, Elvis, Malcolm X, and more! Did our picks have YOU seeing double?

I'm not sure who would be the best choice to play her, but I think that Marlene Dietrich is the most interesting movie star. Definitely not the most talented, and absolutely not the nicest, but she had an amazing career, and an amazing life. Maximilian Schell's documentary is one of a kind.
She allows him and his film crew into her Paris apartment, but won't allow the camera to film her, but she does talk, and that's an understatement. She constantly criticizes Schell, and complains that Frau Schell (his mother) did a very poor job in teaching him good manners.
She would sometimes answer the phone, and pretending that she was a maid, would tell the caller that Madame Dietrich was unable to come to the phone, because she was lunching at Versailles.

Jamie Foxx, has allowed everyone to see how mimicry is a form of art and some people are so good, that they can embody someone's essence, he showed everyone how to do it. all due respect to everyone else on the list but they can not even compare to the respect and care Jamie Foxx had for the role of Ray Charles. to be able to imitate them in spirit is one thing, then to learn how they interacted and created a specific system to exist successfully in an uncaring society, and be educated in a new way of being, and then to add the piano, singing, and musicality. Jamie Foxx is one of the bests of everything he touches.

You missed a big one: Jim Carrey as Andy Kauffman for Man in the Moon.
Carrey has stated that he wanted this part more than any other in his career, to the point where he dissuaded or even sabotaged other potential castings of the role.
Once he got it, Carrey went full method and nailed Kauffmans speech and mannerisms so thoroughly that it scared the Kauffman family.

Great list. I'd add some others though.
Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana
Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding
Chadwick Boseman as Jackie Robinson
Will Smith as Richard Williams and Muhammed Ali
Christian Bale as Dick Cheney
Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury

I must say I personally feel Leon as David Ruffin I'm The Temptations was definitely a hell of a role. Otis Williams himself said Leon's portrayal was so similar to how David really was, Otis no longer could attend the shootings cause it triggered the memories.

Honestly, whilst there have been many great portrayals of historical figures over the years, I can't think of one better than Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher. She's already an amazing actress, but her portrayal as Britain's first female PM was so incredible

Austin Butler blew my mind in the biography movie of Elvis! He looked and even sounded like the King of Rock and Roll! He did an amazing job and I think even Elvis himself would be proud, that this young man was able to bring him to live on the big screen.

Those are some really good picks. Glad you included Denzel Washington's amazing portrayal of Malcolm X. However, I feel that Angela Bassett's great depiction of Tina Turner in What's Love Got To Do With It should've at least gotten an honorable mention.
reply

Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking is truly one of the best, if not the best biopic performance. The guy truly incarnated Stephen Hawking, and sometimes you could forget that one wasn't the real Stephen Hawking. What a shame he wasn't added to this top.

Angela Bassett is the queen of biopics & bioseries. She has played Tina Turner, Betty Shabazz, Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott-King, Voletta Wallace, Janet Williams, and Katherine Jackson. How did she not get even an honorable mention!
reply

Steve coogan and John C Reilly as laurel and Hardy, Michael Sheen as Chris tarrant in Quiz, Ian Hart and Gary Bakewell as John Lennon and Paul McCartney in Backbeat, Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in bohemian Rhapsody

Gotta say, this kind of stuff is almost entirely a matter of opinion but in this case if #1 hadn't been what it is, I feel like you would have been simply wrong. It's an absolutely stunning performance.

At 5: 50. so you're telling me, there's a chance that Miranda Cosgrove could audition and play The King of Pop Michael Jackson in his biopic movie! (If they ever make a biopic movie about Michael Jackson)
reply

I'm surprised you didn't mention Taron Edgerton as Elton John - you mentioned a few performers who did their own singing, and Edgerton is one of those actors. And he pulls off the role masterfully.
reply

These guys are crazy not even mentioning Angela Bassett in any of her roles (especially Tina Turner, Chadwick Boseman in any of his roles (especially James Brown) and Daniel Kaluuya as Fred Hampton
reply

Clearly, this should be a top twenty list! Only honorable mentions for the Lincoln and Gandi portrayals pretty much shoots down this top ten list. I mean, that is just plain ridiculous.
reply

Dont forget Jennifer Lopez as Selena, Daniel Radcliffe as Weird Al Yankovic, and Keke Palmer, Lil Mama, and Drew Sidora as TLC I just seen some familiar biopic celebrities of all.
reply

Ive never seen Ray, I heard its great! And that Jamie fox does a good job. But my favorite biopic Ive seen so far for the movie it self and Austin butlers performance is ELVIS.
reply

My favorite biopic castings are Aaron Taylor-Johnson as John Lennon from Nowhere Boy, and Emma Thompson as P. L. Travers and Tom Hanks as Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks.
reply

Question why is cate Blanchett a woman playing Bob Dylan a man in a movie they couldn't find a actual man to play him even though it's no problem at all just wondering.
reply

I'm seeing a lot of choices in the comments that weren't included in this video. Don't worry, as they always do, there will be a top 20 a few weeks down the line.
reply

Disappointed that Taron Egerton as Elton John wasn't on this list. He deserved more recognition for his performance and his versions of Elton's songs.
reply

I guess I'm going to have to watch the Elvis movie because just by looks alone I don't see it. He literally looks nothing like Elvis LOL
reply

Toma Hanks - Mr Rogers, Lou Dimond Phillips - Richie Vlanes, Forgot his name but he played Freddy Mercury, Jennifer Lopez - Selena
reply

I was shocked not to see Chadwick Boseman as James Brown in the top 5! He really made me think that was the real James Brown!
reply

No mention of Tom Hiddleston's portrayal of Hank Williams? He studied Hank's singing style, even learning to yodel for the role.
reply

Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury deserved a spot on the list, even number 1. His performance was absolutely perfect.
reply

The new edition cast, lil mama as left eye in the TLC bio pic, Angela Bassett as Tina turner and in the Jackson 5 movie
reply

how did ice cube son make this list but Angela Bassett didnt make the list or honorable mention she embodied Tina Turner
reply

Why wasn't Taron Egerton as Elton John on the list, or Kevin Spacey as Bobby Darin, or Jennifer Lopez as Selena?
