While I can't dispute Singin' in the Rain's top spot -- it is my favorite movie musical -- I can't help but feel a little sad that Yankee Doodle Dandy, with its explosive lead performance by James Cagney (he won an Oscar for it, doesn't even rate an Honorable Mention. For me, this wonderful look back at early 20th century Broadway is miles ahead of Grease, in terms of both its songs and its performances. (Nothing in that 1978 film, for instance, is nearly as emotionally moving as Cagney's scene at the bedside of his dying father, played by Walter Huston)

Well i think the selection is ok as a reference. I myself love guys and dolls, my fair lady, and most fred astaire movies, though I only discovered his singing and dancing in about last 10 years.
I wud say lots of HK, Japanese, and Korean movies at 1 points copied a lot of fred astaire and gene Kelly. In term of originality the pre 1970 Hollywood movies were gold mine.
Today lots of productions are from the streaming companies. Some of them are good or ok, but no more charm and magic

I would have bet money at the start. At number 10 that you were gonna say singing in the rain as number one. Because you like Gene Kelly even though he hasn't done Half the things( Can't play 3 musical instruments)Was a producer of the Director in television Starring in 24 movie and Kennedy center honors emmy and tony award nominee Headliner in Vegas and put out 51 albums with 24 movies (Again starring roles. . that's Sammy Davis, Jr has done. Even you know that list is out of order.

When one starts with book by George Bernard Shaw, how can MY FAIR LADY be topped as number 1? Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn are brilliant. It has a great score. .As a film it is far better than Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. PS. Judy Holliday [Bells Are Ringing] beat out Julie Andrews [My Fair Lady] for Tony. That's a shocker

Oh my gosh almost all of these movie musicals will be my favorite. I would like to thank my grandmother for introducing me to Sound of Music, Singin in the rain, Mary Poppins, The Wizard of Oz, Meet me in Saint Louis. Thanks to my dad for introducing me to Grease, thanks to my stepdad for introducing me to West Side Story

The fact that Oliver! is never mentioned in these lists astounds me. The movie is just as good as the phonomenal stage musical moving around scenes to great effect. I still believe it is the best movie musical and musical in general alongside Sound of Music and it is a crime not to mention it on this list.

Grease has a special place in my heart it is all my favourite elements of a movie in one I honestly also love Olivia and its always a bop
How can I explain wizard of oz
My childhood in a movie love it all

Same as Wizard if it I think Ive watched it 50 times

Thanks for including The Bandwagon. Storywise, it's not the best, but the musical numbers are wonderful! I'd put it higher than you did. Others deserving of notice Annie Get Your Gun, Hello Dolly, Cover Girl, and It's Always Fair Weather. And Annie for using Carol Burnett as Miss Hannigan.

Some of my favorite movie musicals of the 20th Century are: Singing in the Rain, Meet Me In St Louis, West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Holiday Inn, White Christmas, State Fair, Mary Poppins, Grease, Grease 2, The Music Man, Babes in Toyland, and many more
reply

Interestingly, two of your choices featured Oscar Levant, whom Sean Hayes won a Tony Award for playing in Goodnight, Oscar. Both films take advantage of Levant's amazing piano talents, as the stage play takes advantage of Hayes' own piano talent.

The greatest Musical of all time is there's no business like show business. It's never mentioned its never on any list. It's so underrated. Great music great performances amazing cast great story. The movie has everything.

Absolutely I love the sound of music it holds a surprise place in my heart my nanny and I watched it all the time I going a tattoo for tribute to her and it my life was forever changed by it great list
reply

'South Pacific' would've been better without the colour filters they used, but it's an important musical. And 'The King and I'. I would MARRY the score of 'The King and I' if I could.
reply

It's your list, so obviously there is no right or wrong. My list would include Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, 42nd Street, and Lili (and an honorable mention for Victor/Victoria.
reply

Not even an honorable mention for Holiday Inn, White Christmas, Saturday Night Fever or The Music Man? They at least deserved at least that much. Xanadu is an underrated classic.
reply

My picks for at least honorary mention are Hello Dolly, Yankee Doodle Dandy, South Pacific and White Christmas. How about doing Judy Garland movies as their own category.
reply

I think you need to get checked for some form of lunacy, the wizard of oz is the greatest movie musical of all time, its always played some where in some form or fashion.
reply

Grease is a very problematic musical in many ways, from the sleazy innuendos of the guys singing to the fact that Sandy has to change completely to get her man. Bleah
reply

enchanted is also lighthearted and catchy underrated my fair lady the music man king and I cinderella any are good anytime but la boheme rent chicago les mis forgotten
reply

No Oklahoma, Showboat, or Fiddler on the Roof? How about Umbrellas of Cherbourg or My Fair Lady? I mean, all of these are better than Grease, for pete's sake!
reply

Where's Chicago? One of the best musicals ever made! Catherine Zeta Jones, Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere, Queen Latifah, stellar cast! A near perfect musical!
reply

I haven't seen too many! Was Oklahoma made into a movie? I did like The Music Man and Yankee Doodle Dandy. I also liked The Way we Were with Barbara Streisand.
reply

It doesn't get better than Singin' in the Rain so good to see it at No 1 but I have always had a soft spot for The Pajama Game starring the great Doris Day
reply

Where are Oklahoma, Carousel, Seven brides for seven brothers, The Music Man, Fiddler on the roof? You missed so many obvious choices, need a bigger list!
reply

Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella is the best. You can't top Whitney Houston as Fairy Godmother! How did this not even get an honorable mention?
reply

Can you please stop making lists where Singing in the Rain arrives first? After a while, it's becoming utterly boring, predictable and exagerated.
reply

Here's another one: Across the Universe, which brilliantly turns the Beatles' music into a musical, and even has Joe Cocker in multiple roles.
reply

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang doesn't even get an honorable mention? It makes my top ten. How about All That Jazz? anything by Busby Berkeley?
reply

I just love musicals so much! So happy to see An American in Paris and of course Singin in the Rain on here, I love Gene Kelly!
reply

Mary Poppins was my first live action movie musical! I also love Grease. Sound of Music is semi holiday viewing tradition
