Classic Hollywood had a wealth of solo male dances. For this list, well be looking at the greatest examples of men showing off their moves by themselves in flicks released during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Our countdown includes Sunday Jumps, Bang! Bang, You're All the World to Me, and more! Did we miss any of YOUR favorite solo outings?

I always got the ick from Gene Kelly. Then after I heard how mean he was to poor Debbie Reynolds that cemented the ick. Now to hear he rammed his tongue down her throat. It tripled the ick. Yes he was a mega talent. He could dance his ass off. He sang well. He was a good actor. But as a person he sucked. And that sours me to not being able to enjoy his performances in the old movies.

This may be a little heretical but, if I'd been compiling the list, I would've restricted each dancer to ONE scene. There's no denying that Astaire and Kelly were performers beyond compare but when the two men account for half the scenes, you may as well have just made a Top 10 Gene Kelly or Top 10 Fred Astaire solo dance scenes and been done with it.

One of the few great solos missing from YT is Fred Astaire's 'Putting On The Ritz' from 'Blue Skies', which he intended to be his swan song. Unlike some of his post-Ginger solos, its use of cinema trickery and props is unobtrusive, without the slight hint of show-off that mars them.

Thank you for including Sammy Davis Jr on this list. He was one of my father's favorite entertainers--such a remarkable, talented man.
Also good to see Donald O'Connor. He is sometimes overlooked because of Astaire and Kelly, but he deserves to be remembered too.

Gene's roller skate dance was great! But Fred did it first with Ginger 18 years earlier (Let's Call The Whole Thing Off. As for Gregory Hines, this is the wrong time period for his impeccable work. But I'm wondering why Dan Dailey isn't on this list anywhere.

Personally I would change 1st and 2nd spot.
Also remember from Fred Astaire's Lifetime achievement award in 1981 presented by David Niven. His first report from a tryout read: Can't sing, can't act, can dance a little.

hon. mention: Bobby Van from Small Town Girl
wasn't really a solo dance, it's just him hopping across town. but the way he did it made it look like it was one continuous take.

Gene Kelly deserves every spot on those 10. My mother was a dance partner of his in Pittsburgh in the early days. She always said he was a true gentleman and a great dancer.
reply

I'd also throw in Broadway Melody from SINGIN' IN THE RAIN as an honorable mention! It's mostly centered around GK, but with other dancers floating in and out throughout.

The movie is called I Love Melvin 1953 stars Donald Connor. and I guarantee you. His roller skating routine is better. And you finally pay homage to Sammy Davis junior

The innovations of Gene Kelly's Routines are absolutely incredible. As someone who can't rollerskate to save his life, I Like Myself was particularly impressive.

James Cagney was fantastic in Yankee Doodle Dandy. The Oscar he won for it was definitely deserved. One of my favorite musicals ever, and movies in general.

Bill Robinson - ANY TAP DANCE
Charlie Chaplin -Modern Times (1936)
Ray Bolger - The Harvey Girls (1946)
Donald O'Connor - I Love Melvin (1953)

What a great list you compiled but you missed dances by POC. Black people invented all these dances in the first place, dont leave them off your lists
reply

Thank you. Great, amazing selection from Hollywood's true Golden Era. My all-time favorites are the ultr-talented Fred, Gene. and Donald O'Connor.
reply

I trained as a dancer. One of the first things I was taught was dont look at your feet. It has always annoyed me that Astaire stares at his feet
reply

Donald deserves better than number 3 yall really skipping over What Chance Have I With Love from Call Me Madam and thats a damn shame
reply

You missed a moment when commentating on I Got Rhythm. should have said who could ask for anything more? Instead of what more do you want?
reply

When Singin' in the Rain came up as #4, I thought, The top 3 damned well better be impressive! I was not disappointed.
reply

I wondered how Gene Kelly did the dance in Its Always Fair Weather on roller skates. It LOOKS SO easy, but its not.
reply

Gene Kelly was and is the best. His performance in Xanadu was also beautifully done on roller skates.
