Im obsessed with true crime stories, but not in a glamorized way. Yes I remember the killers names, but in many cases I remember who the victims were too. It fascinates and horrifies me the awful things people can do to each other like its a shock factor in many cases. However while I think some killers have a type of untreated mental illness, not all of them do; some people are just evil. With that being said I dont like embellishments of the facts and have no desire to ever meet these individuals. These stories do make me more aware of my surroundings and who or what is nearby to keep an eye on. I also like true to life reenactments cuz I dont want to see the gory crime scene pictures. Plus with my being on the autistic spectrum I have a photographic memory and never forget the faces of those victims who something about their story personally touched me. Its a weird thing to be interested in I guess, but it helps me to be a more caring and kind person in my own life.

One weekend in the early 90's, three broadcast TV networks had quickly produced movies involving the Long Island Lolita case. While one was based on official transcripts, the other two each had conflicting perspectives of the victim and the perpetrator of the crime. It was the zenith of an era where some movies of the week were based on real life crimes. Some of them, at the very least, had been based on published books, which the three Long Island Lolita movies could not claim.

I usually have no problem with certain things from True Crime existing. Its our way of coping quite literally with how we treat each other in this world. And I dont deny the fact that answers are what people are looking for.
But what I truly dont understand is the quantity of the explanations of such events. Like, how many think pieces/artistic interpretations of Dahmer do we as a society REALLY need?

Look, I love True Crime, and some people think Im crazy. But I always tell people that women and children tend to be the victims of these crimes. As a woman, it makes me more aware of my surroundings to make sure Im safe as possible. But Im not too fond of the dramatized true crime shows. The ones Ive seen dont accurately represent the crime or the victims!
reply

I like True Crime Documentaries because they present the facts and the presenters interview the victims families so you can learn more about the victims. I love learning about the victims lives as much as the killers because it makes you appreciate what the families lost and you can put yourselves in their shoes and empathise with them. At least British ones do.

It absolutely does not glorify killers, can't say I've seen a true crime show that I've been rooting for the killer or even on their side. It brings to light their terrible actions and educates, I can see how it would cause the victims' families pain having to go through that again but if you think they are being glorified then that sounds like a you problem.
reply

Sadly I think the reason they don't focus too much on the victims is either they know their relatives will call them out on it if they get it wrong or, just a theory this one - maybe they want people to rewatch it and if it focuses on the victims, it won't be easy to revisit.

Don't forget that making series and movies about these serial killers can lead to them being regarded as attractive, if people find the actor attractive. You briefly touched on this with the young Richard Ramirez film, but I feel like it needed more detail.
reply

I can understand the victims families feel to keep seeing this over and over. I've had murders in my life happen and I can't watch true crimes anymore because it's just too close to home and it's sad. Rest in peace to anyone harmed
reply

I dont like this shows telling me this criminals had a moment of regrets because they didnt! Thats for sure. This people are not capable of feeling guilty. They are trying to make them humans but they are not. They are monsters
reply

Misinformation presented as truth annoys me most. As does the dramatic license some films/shows/documentaries also take all in the name of entertainment. Some of these things are horrific enough - no need to make them entertaining
reply

agree with the points given. I myself find it's easier to remember the names of the killers rather than the victims. in one way, watching true crimes series makes my brain works on how to escape and survive if anything happens.
reply

What does it mean when u get pumped up when ur watching an episode that details some of the sickest killings or behaviors? Or, if a person says, If I could have a second life, Id be a serial killer? Asking for a friend
reply

I grew up watching true crime, and I always have it playing in the background to this day. Theres no glorification involved in these shows, its just reality that all people are capable of doing the unimaginable.
reply

A lot of my friends and family think i'm weird for watching true crime. But as a single mother living on my own it has made me vigilant to make sure me and my daughter are safe.
reply

I enjoy how these true crime series reveal the inadequacies and biases in law enforcement.
Especially the many times the police lie to ensure the prosecutions case.

The paradox here is hoping to get clicks on a video about how true crime consumption is bad when by viewing the video we are engaging in true crime consumption
reply

I love true crime, too - sadly, the bad guys are glamourized because we remember their names as opposed to their victims (ie: Columbine shooters, etc)
reply

Can we find a narrator that doesn't either sound like they're reading straight from the script and who aren't reading to us like we're Kindergartners?
reply

It is very true andvery sickening.
Shamelessly, yes, media is glorifying these crazy monsters.
Andnobody sees this as a problem.

reply

I have lived in Milwaukee all 42 years of my life; and I have absolutely no desire to go on any kind of Jeffrey Dahmer sightseeing tour.
reply

Mormons are a bad example of misrepresentations lol theyre pretty strict and twisted I mean read the Book of Mormon its not that off base
reply

I never got why people keep romanticizing serial killers. They killed people, what could possibly be alluring about that?
reply

In fairness, with the Mormon one, was it really about inaccuracies or were they just angry to have their beliefs criticized?
reply

This is why I watch bailey, she doesn't make it so creepy. She makes it bearable her nervous laughter breaks up the story.
reply

The ones I watch are always very respectful and make it a point to name and show photos, if possible, of the victims.
reply

You learn how they get away with it. If they refuse to give DNA guilty. If they clean a particular room something happened
reply

I love true crime. Mainly so I can vent and scream at the screen over the gross incompetence of almost every US cop.
reply

Most the people in this comment section and even the video really don't know the definition of glorifying
reply

I like true crime content but never glorified serial killers cant we just like this content without stigma?
