I'm so glad you included 'Fiorello! '. It really deserves a new revival, since people don't remember how parties can change. Trivia: When the show premiered on Broadway, LaGuardia had only been retied as mayor for 13 years, so everyone remembered what he looked like. The producers were lucky to get Tom Bosley (later of Happy Days) to play the title character, because there was a strong physical resemblance.
When I saw the title for this, I immediately thought of 'South Pacific'. It was one of my father's favorite musicals, and 'You've Got to Be Taught' was one of his favorite songs.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Rent. I've seen it on stage both on Broadway in the US, and with the Welsh National Theatre in UK. Mostly, it addresses the AIDS epidemic and gentrification of poor neighborhoods. Very impactful.
I've seen most of the shows in your list on stage, and actually worked backstage on a few of them in regional productions. Overall, a good list.

The 1st show I ever saw Jon a live stage was Big River, based on Mark Train's book Huckleberry Finn. When Huck runs away, the black slave Jim joins him and they learn about bigotry and hatred and friendship together. I would have liked to have seen it on this list.

So glad Show Boat was #1, I watched it as a young girl and loved it instantly although at that time I probably didnt understand the issues it was talking about. Also, thank you for mentioning Finians Rainbow! Another of my favourites!

I liked that the remake of West Side Story had Valentina as Doc's widow. Not only has she the experience of being in an interracial relationship, like Tony and Maria, but her being a widow hints to Maria's fate.

The way _Hair_ delivered it's message in such a heartfelt and heartbreaking way is what makes it so timeless and such an amazing piece of art.

I am surprised that Parade didnt make the list, though.

West Side Story is always a favorite. These performances made audiences think about the actions going on, so they did their work.

What about Hairspray? It covers body positivity and racism, and I thought both messages were represented very well in that show.

Maybe these musicals appeared when my grandpa was still alive and the truth is, my grandpa died when I was two.

Pity 'Mrs Santa Claus' isn't old enough to be a classic, because it tackles the women's vote and child labour.

Carousel could have been on this list as it dealt with such things as domestic violence and poverty.
