The Land Before Time is still one of my all-time favorite franchises. The first movie is a WHOPPER! I cry every time Mama Longneck dies, and I have to even skip it nowadays since my dog's death and I'm trying to process my grandmother's death. And watching Littlefoot grieve is heartbreaking, but its so refreshing to see him push on to encourage his friends and himself to find the Great Valley, despite Cera's staunch belief that the valley doesn't exist makes him question himself and his mother's lessons. But the rest of the franchise being in bright colors and with joyful songs helps to bring the mood back up and keep my heart full as the little dinosaurs race to the future. Though I've already reached adulthood, I'm still very much a kid at heart and the wonder of growing up is something I often need to dwell in as I pursue a career as a YA/New Adult fantasy novelist.
The Fox and the Hound is another favorite but its one I have to be in a particular mood to enjoy. The scene where Widow Tweed leaves Tod makes me cry every time without fail, likely because I tend to be pretty empathetic but I suspect I have some abandonment issues from my parents raising me less than gracefully with my ADHD/Autism, while they doted on my brother who was much more volatile - being bipolar and manic depressed, he turned to violence and alcohol at a young age, so he got our parents attention more than I did because his problems placed his life in danger whereas mine 'merely made school difficult'.

Rediscovering the land before time has made me wonder what would have happened if the grieving process was portrayed through the mother's perspective while little foot passed away from the attack. His mother must have been terrified over the thought of losing him when you remember he was the only healthy egg that made it because the other ones were destroyed. There was no guarantee she would have conceived a brand new litter of offspring if she had either reunited with her husband or moved on with another long neck. Losing a child has a completely different meaning than losing a parent, so it's really hard to imagine how she would have cooperated with the rest of the migration alone. Her parents especially would be extremely heart broken if they never saw Little foot again.

I was actually an adult when most of these came out, but I love 'em anyway. The Last Unicorn is one of my favorites as I've collected unicorns since just about forever. I'd seen it many times, had it on VHS and eventually DVD, and shared it with my daughters. However, this past year one of my daughters bought me the book and it was the first time I'd read it. I couldn't believe how loyal the movie was! Much of the dialog was taken word-for-word right out of the text. Yes, there were some pieces cut, but they were pretty incidental. There was only one part I wished they had kept (but I don't give spoilers.

Don Bluth was an absolute master of animation. His films had such a amazing balance of magic, darkness and timeless lessons. They didn't talk down to kids, they presented their stories directly and had faith that children could understand and handle them. And we did, and that's why they are such classics that are still beloved. Unlike the garbage pumped out these days. Nothing produced in the last 10-15 years will ever be regarded as a classic.

My top favorites will always be The Last Unicorn, Land Before Time, An American Tail (I also loved the sequel An American Tail: Fivel Goes West, The Little Mermaid, and The Secret Of N. I. M. H. there are so many amazing movies from back then, I was just a little kid and even now in my forties those stories live in my heart. add Legend, Labryinth, The Dark Crystal and a few others and that's just the beginning of my ever growing list.

2022 at a Comic-Con in Anchorage Alaska I got to meet Keith coogan voice of the Fox also he was also in adventures of babysitting Don't Tell Mom the babysitter's Dead and he is the grandson of Jackie coogan the original Uncle Fester from the series with John Ashton doing Gomez of Addams family yeah if I would have known that when I went to the comic Con and met him I would have brought a lightbulb with me and said do it

my biggest grip with the Transformers movie, was not the fact that Prime and the others died, was that Hot Rod interfered in a fight that didn't involve him and still ended up with the Matrix. that's the problem. The little mermaid shouldn't be so high on the list, it was crap compared to Tranformers and The Land Before Time. Frankly I'd switch them and switch the Little Mermaid with A Christmas Carol.

This is a pretty decent list and I definitely agree on #1. The Secret Of Nimh traumatized me when I was a kid (especially The Great Owl, hauntingly voiced by John Carradine) and The Fox And The Hound gutted me. However, I was totally surprised that you did not include the underrated gem The Great Mouse Detective and The Brave Little Toaster. TBLT has been known to traumatize many young kids.

Land before time All dogs go to heaven still go back at watch those from time to time cats don't dance space jam awesome Flims balto still have a soft spot for even though most of the story made up late 90s early 200s prime movies and TV before everything was a streaming service and unnecessary remakes good times this generation can have it's moments every once in a while I'll say that

I loved the Last Unicorn, it's one of my earliest memories, even though it was released four years before I was born, my family used to put it on all the time.
I also always felt so sad watching all dogs go to heaven given that it was the last time we would listen to Judith Barsi, as it was released after her death, same with listening to Ducky in land before time.

Don Bluth is truly a legend in 2D animation. I am glad I was born during the 80s. It's times like this, I wish we still had his 2D animated movies and video games around today.
Plus, his book Somewhere Out There is very good, touching, and full of surprises. People should really read it, they don't know what they're missing.

replace The Last Unicorn ( never seen it tbh ) with The Black Cauldron ( one of Disney's most underrated & underappreciated classics ) and that's my childhood. Transformers especially, IMO it's still the absolute best Transformers movie. It's just got the Touch; )

the little mermaid was one of my favorites growing up, but it shouldn't be this high on this list, my other favorites, American tail, who framed roger rabbit, all dogs go to heaven should have been higher. ( and the brave little toaster should have been on this list too)
reply

I loved Secret of Nim when I was a little kid still do. Never saw or heard of the last unicorn movie. I made a video on Who Framed Roger Rabbit as a topic is it a Disney movie or not. Despite I was born in the 90s. Grew up on 80s movies tv shows, and cartoons.

Title of this Vid is all wrong. Should be called.
Animated movies, Karens would stop being made today.
Kids weren't treated as kids until they were in their mid teens in the 70's and 80's.
Babying is why we have so many problems today.

No movie left a bigger impression on me as a kid than secret of nimh. I saw it once at my cousin's home, and it stayed with me forever. I bought the movie for myself a few years ago and loved it so much, truly an animation masterpiece

Sad Fact: Don Bluth was so heartbroken by Judith Barsis death that not only did he make Anne Marie look like her, but he pushed for All Dogs go to Heavens ending song to be Love Survives to honor her.

My sister & I grew up watching the 1st Transformers animated movie, The Land Before Time, An American Tail, The Little Mermaid & Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I even still own the An American Tail duology VCDs

Mostly a great list, but I'd replace All Dogs Go to Heaven, The Last Unicorn, and The Transformers: The Movie with The Chipmunk Adventure, The Brave Little Toaster, and THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE!

Here's a dumb question regarding that last one; How come that medalion Mrs. Brigsby used wasn't in the sequel even though she told Jeremy she gave it to Justin at the end of the movie?
reply

You won me over! All of my favorites are on this list! This is a million times better than WatchMojo's Top 10 80's Animated Movies, where half of the films were independent films.

118: I wasnt born in the 1980s but I did enjoy the 80s animated movies such as Don Bluth. I can see An American Tail as a broadway musical. I first watched it before the pandemic hit
reply

121: The Secret of NIMH. Oo, so many memories. I used to watch it at my dads home when I was little. As an adult, I FOUND out its considered the darkest animated movie of all time
