Song of The South was actually the short stories by Joel Chandler Harris about how to conduct oneself in life. It should still be shown in some settings for historical and sociological purposes to show how African Americans were seen and treated in the past. It wasnt right by todays standards, but it did happen.
Citizen Kane should be noted today for its use of camera angles- they still look fresh and innovative even after some 80 years!
Midnight Cowboy got an X rating when it was originally released. Years later it was rereleased and received an R rating!
Other movies that are worth mentioning that did receive at least some controversy upon release are: I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang (1932, Guess Whos Coming To Dinner? (1967, Easy Rider (1969, To Sir With Love (1967, The Killing Of Sister George (1968, The Graduate (1967, Tom Jones (1963, All The Kings Men (1949, Morocco (1930, Nightmare Alley (1947, Whos Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? (1965, Alfie (1966, The Women (1939, Olympia (1938, Triumph Of The Will (1935, Advise And Consent (1962, and Reefer Madness (1936.

As a black person, I completely understand the controversy around Song of the South. I watched it a while back just to see for myself, and I kind of liked it. Of course the racial stereotypes of the black characters are dated. But I like how Uncle Remus was a positive influence for the young boy, and that the boy looked up to him. I also like seeing Hattie McDaniel. And from a visual perspective, I liked the way Disney merged animation with live-action.

Freaks was a good movie. I recently watched it and did a little research about it and I found the characters very interesting. Made me appreciate myself a little bit. Birth of a Nation was a great cinematic masterpiece. Song of the South was cute and I liked how Uncle Remus made a positive impact on the young boy. I dont really pay much mind to the stereotypes because I know people just exaggerate everything.

Im surprised Its A Wonderful Life didnt make this list! Apparently it was not well received when it first premiered due to a working man dealing with suicide, and left audiences feeling uncertain. Today its a holiday classic. Interesting how culture can shift with time and history.

I dont get it. This started out as these moves were controversial when released then shifted into these moves were terrible and only reason they didnt slip into the dustbin of history is because of manufactured controversy

_Citizen Kane_ really is one of if not the greatest masterpiece of all time, and Orson Welles' greatest work. It's such a shame it didn't get the attention it deserves from the start.

I could be totally remembering incorrectly, and if this video says that Song of the South has never been released on video in the US, I could have sworn that my neighbor had a copy.

I remember when I was in 11th grade, I was shown a small bit of Birth Of A Nation in my history class with my teacher explaining the controversy around it

Griffith got his history lesson from his confederate grandfather growing up, so no wonder this film is as wrong-headed and tone deaf as it is

D. W. Griffith's answer to the controversy of Birth of a Nation was Intolerance at the other end of the spectrum.
