In retrospect, all of these scandalous moments and controversial performances made an increase of pop culture for both the right and wrong reasons.
Nowadays, nobody cares who won the most awards at the VMAS. They care about the most talked about event that increases viewings for the network, the artists promotion rollout and the media coverage they garner; the good, the bad and ugly.

The Britney-Madonna-Christina kisses were the biggest because it spawned Justin trying to get revenge by exposing Janet Jackson's right breast at the Superbowl halftime show 5 months later, which caused a FCC breakdown!
It was all to enhance Justin's ego & give him a shock value publicity stunt.

The 1D & Taylor Swift wasnt really much of a scandal. I dont even think no one really cares tbh. If anything, yall shouldve placed the performance of Robin Thicke & Miley Cyrus performance cause that was just scandalous as hell. Nobody cant say that it wasnt.

19th would've been 2003 this incident happened at the 18th Video Music Awards in 2002 my favorite controversial moment is Either Britney Spears's I'm A Slave 4 You with the Albino Python Snake Banana in 2001 which would've been the 17th annual VMAs

Lady Gaga is, without a doubt, the biggest attention wh-re 'singer' of the last 20-25 years and it's not even close. (although, I have to say, Destiny Hope Cyrus and Lana Del Rey made some serious inroads in that category back in the 2010s)
