I found Shirley Temple's movies on TV in the 1950s. I watched all of them and own most now. I also watched Shirley Temple's Storybook in 1958. I found her very entertaining as a young actress and TV hostess, but when she was a teenager I didn't think her acting was that good. But she had already stolen my heart.
I attended my only Thanksgiving Day Parade live in 1959 because she road on Macy's own Storybook Float.
And I'm proud of her non-acting choices, especially her work with the United Nations.

Surprised Gene Tierney didn't make the list. A goddess of the silver screen in the 30's and 40's (The Ghost and Mrs. Muir will always be a favourite. Such a sad end to her life, not to mention multiple shock treatments she had to undergo for depression. A career resulting in an early retirement, whether self imposed or not, cut way too short.

I would say most of these people didn't fall off the map. Most of them simply retired or continued to work, just not as successful as they once were. I mean, Mickey Rooney gained a whole new generation of fans with Night at the Museum. Shirley Temple was quite successful away from Hollywood.

Shirley Temple's successor Deanna Durbin, also retired young, graduating from being a child actor, doesn't always work out for some. Hollywood history is littered with child stars who didn't stay on. But there are others who did, one modern example - Leonardo DiCaprio.

You missed the two great walkaways of the Forties: Deanna Durbin and Eleanor Powell. Both became stars in their teens and chose home-making over the limelight when they had had enough. Deanna became the most resolutely ex-famous figure in Hollywood history.

Shirley didnt fall off the map. She was a very successful child star and I doubt she wanted to continue down the same path. Taking a different path was better for her. She sadly passed away in 2014, I remember that day, but she was one heck of a child actor.

Fun fact about George Raft he actually was considered to play the lead roles in High Sierra, The Maltese Falcon & Casablanca but turned them all down and it ended up going to Bogart every single time the 3 films that helped establish Bogart as a star

Lawford also had ties in the mafia! Tale is, he owed a lot of money to the mafia!
Tippi Hedren was pursued by Hitchcock (as were almost all female actors) and if they didn't comply, Hitchcock would get them black listed from the studios.

Vera-Ellen is another celebrity that I wouldve added on this list. An MGM standout, only one of a few actresses that have danced with both Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, but disappeared after the late 1950s.
reply

Harold Lloyd's 'Professor Beware' is actually a very funny film. And his belated comeback nine years later in Preston Sturges's 'Mad Wednesday' is fascinating- a beautifully calibrated and poignant performance.

Peter Lawford did OK till he got Frank Sinatra livid. Peter's career took a nose dive from which he never recovered - 'Chairman of the Board', could be mighty sadistic & vicious.

I don't think that becoming US Ambassador Shirley Temple-Black is falling off the map, nor is Hedy Lamarr inventing WiFi. That's not falling off the map. That's a career change.

There's a little bit more to Garbo's retirement, which came as World War II was depriving her of the most important market for her films: Europe.
reply

At least Shirley still led an eventful life after leaving the toxic entertainment industry, becoming involved in politics in her later years.
reply

Shirley Temple becoming a high profile US Ambassador isnt exactly what anyone in their right mind would call falling off the map.
reply

Mae West was plagued by movie censorship and left movies but returned to the silver screen when the movie code collapsed.
reply

Tippi Hedren's acting skills have been inherited by her daughter Melanie Griffith and her granddaughter Dakota Johnson.
reply

It's a shame that Tippi Hedren had such a hard time thanks to Hitchcock. She had some real potential.

Rita Hayworth quit acting due to alcoholism which would later be misdiagnosed with Alzheimers disease.
