Honestly, we can always use more Mr. Darcys! For this essay, well be looking at the most notable ways in which adaptations, particularly more modern ones, have updated Jane Austens classic novel for the screen. Watch out for spoilers ahead, as plot points will be discussed! We'll be looking at family matters, class conflict, intimacy and more!

After watching the 1940 movie with Greer Garson and Lawrence Olivier, and the 1995 ministries with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, I didn't care for any other version except the modernized Bridget Jones' Diary version. I own all three, as well as the Keira Knightley movie, but Knightley doesn't quite do it for me (I do like and own some of her other movies, though, as well as her TV works Oliver Twist and Doctor Zhivago.

There are many other P&P versions:
-Pride and Prejudice (1940)
-Pride and Prejudice (BBC 1980)
-Pride and Prejudice (modern version, 2003)
-Bride and Prejudice
-Austenland
-Lost in Austen
-Lizzie Bennets Diary
-Unleashing Mr. Darcy

Lizzie and Darcy were in the same class in the regency era. They both were part of the landed gentry. He had better connections and more money, but they were still in the same social class. Otherwise their romance would have been nearly impossible.

I'm really disappointed to discover that you left out my favorite Pride and Prejudice, the 1995 Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle version! Why penalize it just because it was broadcast on PBS in two parts? It is movie length, and I love the cast.
reply

After '95 adaptation, which is and wil be the best for all times, the second movie/book being loyal to the soul of the P&P (but not a direct adaptation) for me is Austenland
reply

I just love a good Pride and Prejudice movie. To really find the one you like the most, youd have to watch them all. And avoid certain ones.
reply

I'm torn between the 95 and 05 versions as being my favourites. I can't decide between Colin Firth or Matthew MacFadyen for the dreamiest Darcy!
reply

It seems like video made generally for Fire Island fans. And lots of other screen adaptations didnt mentioned at all.
reply

I don't think anybody has yet made a Cartoon Version of Pride and Prejudice or a Naturist Nudist Version Of Pride and Prejudice.
reply

If y'all love the '05 version go read Pride and Prejudice and Pittsburgh by Rachael Lippincott it's SO GOOD!
reply

Colin Firth will always be the best male hetero Darcy. His casting in Bridget Jones was meta perfection!
