Fred Astaire was a huge Broadway star before Hollywood. He also introduced more hit songs in films than anyone else. Gene Kelly also was a Broadway star before hitting Hollywood, having starred in Pal Joey. And I would hardly call Audrey Hepburn a great singer. Charming, yes. Great, no. Ginger Rogers was a Broadway star before Hollywood, having introduced But Not For Me and Embraceable You in Girl Crazy. And before Yankee Doddle Dandy, Cagney had already appeared in

I remember my dad telling me that Ginger Rogers said in an interview that the coin dress she wore in Gold Diggers was the heaviest thing shed ever worn and that it gave her back pain and was hard to move in. Yet she still managed to make it look like air when she moved.
All the people on this list were/are great actors, dancers and singers.

James Cagney was one of the best. He could do Yankee Doodle Dandy and then be just as good in a thriller like White Heat. Such a great talent!
And Shirley MacLaine is so amazing in Sweet Charity. It's a musical adaptation of Fellini's Nights Of Cabiria, and it's well worth your time.
Thanks for highlighting these legends, MsMojo!

Song writers often wanted Fred Astair to introduce their songs in his movies. They liked his panache, and then later would give it to the more popular singers like. Sinatra.

What about Robert Preston? The Music Man on Broadway and film? The film version of Mame? Ben Franklin in Paris, I Do, I Do and Mack and Mabel on Broadway. My very favorite!

Rest in peace, Angela Landsbury. Between Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Beauty and the Beast, her voice was divine. I wish that she'd sung in more projects.

Cagney was singing and dancing well before Yankee Doodle Dandy. He starred in the movies Something to Sing About, Foot light Parade, and others.

Before being typecasted, James Cagney was sing in pre-code films, see Footlight Parade(1933) which predates Yankee Doodle Dandy(1942)

Many of these people had gotten their start either in Broadway or Vaudeville, like Fred Astaire, Shirley MacLaine and Judy Garland.

Ginger Roger's voice is not my cup of tea. I'm not sure if it's HER or the decade. But loved her acting and dancing.
good list!

You should've shown Marilyn singing in Ladies of the Chorus. That movie showcased her voice the best.
