All excellent choices. I'd have to say that Comedy Tonight from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is the greatest opening number from this list. It informs, and (really) entertains and truly sets up the whole show. And, yes it DID save the show out-of-town in Washington (pre-Broadway!

You did not use the Ben Vereen's opening to Pippin Come on sister, the ones who watch over your shoulder would have allowed THIS one little slip. I mean they let you use Topol. Heck, they let you use Fiddle on the Roof and we all know how dangerous THAT was in your circles.

I hope I get it is the embodiment of auditions. I have been in hundreds of auditions, and got about 60% of them. It's always bad to be told to go home, but making it to the next stage is always exhilarating.

Jellical song for jellical cats is one of the most incredible, impactful overtures ever. As much as we love to hate the recent movie disaster, who can deny the impact of Cats in the history of musicals

Where is Walk Him Up The Stairs from Purlie (1970) I saw it back in 1970 and, in more than 60 years of theatre going, to me, it remains the most energetic opening number ever.

Good review. My favorite is the opening of Hair, the Forman film. That was not interspersed with the Hair entry here as were other more recent films, e. g, Chicago.

You should have included Ragtime. It's opening number introduces all the characters and plot lines, and it ends with a rousing, beautiful mixture of amazing harmonies.

Even if you've never seen Fiddler on the Roof, you'll instantly be able to bellow Tradition at the tops of your lungs. It's basically the theme of the entire musical.

Wow! Comedy Tonight was an out-of-town addition If so, a brilliant addition! I agree with another commenter that Prepare Ye is a great opener in Godspell.

I've always loved the opening number of Show Boat. The contrast of the slaves working on the wharf and the well-to-do whites speaks volumes.

I really like the opening of Little Shop of Horrors, but the stage musical came out in 1982 and, sadly, missed your deadline.
