Great, great list! I've got a couple of suggestions for those looking for more R-rated material.
The rarely-released Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is absolutely one of my favorite books in years. Similar to Afterlife with Archie, this is a horror take on classic Archie Comics character Sabrina Spellman. Witty and dark as pitch, CAoS is a combination of witchcraft, coming of age story, and a period piece set in the 60s, intertwining the dark arts, the heart of America, and suburbia into a sick miasma. The artwork of Robert Hack is a particular delight.
Also, the Goddamned: a retelling of the Old Testament using the toolbox from Mad Max. The first issue has one of the most masterfully crafted fight scenes in recent memory as Cain, the first murderer, enacts his bloody craft on a village of marauders. Just astounding. From the same team that created Scalped.

First thing I thought of when I read the title of this video was Shade, so I was happy to see it mentioned first. Gotham Academy is also a great pick, which is also forever connected now with Lumberjanes (also a great pick, from the same pub as Backstagers)
I mostly read DC, so my recs are from there: Detective Comics (start at Rebirth if you are familiar with the Batfamily, Greg Rucka's run on Wonder Woman, Bombshells (talk about diversity in disguise, the new Trinity book, and Mother Panic which is written by Jody Houser, who also writes Faith over at Valiant comics

Solid recommendations, I'd add these.
- Sheriff of Babylon: Fiction without the sci-fi or fantasy. Three authority figures in the midst of the Iraq War.
- East of West: Future four horsemen with agendas in the midst of warring kingdoms.
- Low: Aquatic sci-fi that at it's heart is about showing how things can always get worse.
- The Wicked and the Divine: Modern Day, people find out they're reincarnated Gods but then they find out the catch, you only get 2 years to live. This is just the backdrop to a God murder mystery.
I would add to the list.

. is Wakanda not a Democracy?
Because in this day and age a country _can_ be a Democracy and still have a Royal family.
It's just so weird to be attracted to Black Panther as a superhero (cos of the _Civil War_ film. yet be kinda grossed out that he seems to be a medieval-style King of his nation.

the doctor strange comic thats running right now is so great, im surprised it wasnt on this list! its really weird at times and id definitely recommend it to anyone who saw the movie and is interested in the character, as well as any comic reader in general! its my favorite comic coming out right now.
reply

that's Christmas sorted then! May I also recommend The Wicked And The Divine? it's about various gods and goddesses that are reincarnated every 90 years as a group of teenagers, are hugely, insanely famous for two years, and then die. the art is incredible. you will want to cosplay everyone.

The comic that I've been reading is Lazarus by Greg Rucka. After an unspecified apocalypse, the rich carve up the world for themselves and bring back feudalism. It follows the -Lazarus- of the Carlyle family, a genetically engineered woman named Forever who possesses a healing factor.

Monsteress published by image. Post war fantasy, pan Asian vibe, almost all the characters are woc (and if they're not it's probs bc they're half animal) + some of the most beautiful art I've ever seen omfg. Also magic necromancer cats called. nekomancers lmao

i personally have not cared for harley Quinn since new 52, there have been a few fun moments but most the time it feels like its being witten by some 'edgy' teen on tumblr. thats just my personal opinion if you still wanna read it go for it

Black Monday Murders is worth getting into. Written by East of West's Jonathan Hickman, it's a conspiracy thriller in a world were ancient banks are actually cults at their core. Each issue has a few pieces of ephemera to help build the world.
reply

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl! Doctor Strange! Shutter! Paper Girls! Violent Love! Jughead! The Fix! Black Hammer! A. D. After Death! Etc!
Great list. Can't stand Harley Quinn, though. Tons of books do the same thing better, I think.

If anyone is looking for something a little bit older than most of these recommendations, try Runaways! They've already been talked about in another episode of this show but they're really good for anyone in middle school or above
reply

dang, such interesting recommendations! makes me feel kinda bad that I'm not a regular physical comics buyer and that the only semi current one I read is Mega Man.
Also Cucumber Quest and Paranatural are good webcomics

Harley totally should've beaten Joker to death with her baseball bat in _Suicide Squad_. Or at least broken up with him.
So. _Harley Quinn_ (Palmiotti & Conner) looks like an awesome comic book to me: )

Harrow county is easily the best book running right now - it's understated, immensely clever in how it slowly expands the scope of its world, and beautifully illustrated. To say any more would spoil it.
reply

Ya'll should read a webcomic called Cosmic Cascade. It's real great. It's not like I'm the author of it and I'm desperately pimping it out every chance I get or anything! Nothing like that.
reply

Nice video. I enjoy all the recommendations on this list I've read to at least some extent. I'd love to see some recommendations for books outside the action/adventure genres though.
reply

This was a really good list, and a great diverse selection! Some I'd read, but so many of them are going on my to-read list. Keep up the excellent work, I really loved this one.
reply

Definitely using this as a starting point. I've read so few comics that the only one I can truly recommend is Squirrel Girl, so now I'll have lots more to look through!
reply

I see no Fables even in the comments. Am I missing something about the topic on this? I haven't read any of these but if they are even just as good as Fables count me in.
reply

Really because Ta-Nehisi Coates run on black panther as gone down hill.
Why not include Christopher priest the man who treated t'chala like a character

reply

Holy shit the first song in the background used to be on the Sky TV programme guide, what is it? It must have been 10 years since I last heard it
reply

i recommend teen titans earth one(diverse teen titans, nice art, pretty deadly (magic/western, really beautiful art) and lumberjanes (magic girl scouts)
reply

People should totally read The Flash and New Super-Man right now. They're great well written stories with great characters and great art.
reply

I'm a big fan of the Gwenpool comics. It's crazy, fun, and way better than a comic based off of an alternate cover deserves to be.
reply

Y'all should cover comics from publishers like Koyama Press, Peow Press, Fantagraphics, Draw & Quarterly, Uncivilized Books etc. ..
reply

Descender deserves a mention. Beautiful watercolors, a great cast of characters, and an engaging plot.
reply

Squirrel Girl is one of my favorites. Computer Science jokes by the Dinosaur Comics guy? Count me in.
