When Did Luigi Become Nintendo's Punching Bag?

Luigi hasn't always been a spineless loser. So why is he one now? And what did he do to deserve it? Whats genius is the implicit narrative the gameplay differences between Mario and Luigi entail
In Mario 2, Luigi can jump higher, but is slippery to control as opposed to his brother, whose movement is more precise and controlled
In Smash, Mario is characterised as generally heroic and confident, while Luigi is characterised as trying to live up to his siblings confidence, mixed with many anims displaying his goofiness, incompetence, and generally his somewhat more childish nature
This paints a picture, detailing an emotionally immature younger sibling with greater potential than his relative, but being held back by his own nature, that Luigi is player 2 not because of his incapability, but because of his inability to properly manage his natural talents. I think this is why Mario is so much of an idol, because Mario doesnt do what Luigi cant, at least not in regards to abilities, but because Mario has the confidence and the maturity to utilise his talents more effectively in a way Luigi simply cant. The only thing holding Luigi back is Luigi himself
Least he got the better princess amirite fellas hyuckhyuckhyuck\r\n

My personal characterization of Luigi is that he's the shy and more bashful bro compared to Mario, but he's also the smarter, wiser and more cautious of the two. And while he'd like to have more fame, he's ultimately OK with Mario being more famous. I think this is perfect for him, especially considering his characterization in Dream Team where we see that Luigi's main motivation for going on adventures is being by Mario's side and being there for Mario when he needs him. It would also give him some character growth as well, making him realize that he doesn't need to be like Mario and that he should focus on being his own hero. That would be my ideal portrayal of him anyway.
I'm honestly not a huge fan of the -cowardly loser, constantly needing to prove himself- version of him, especially when he's already done so plenty of times.

The fact that Luigi is always scared andcowardly and all that on the adventures but still goes just shows how much of a hero he is. He doesn't go to get fame, fortune or respect because that's something he never gets. He doesn't do it for the thrill of the adventure cause he's terrified of it and the adventure he goes on. So his mind is never on himself when he does it. He goes on the adventure to help other people and other people only. Never for himself. That's a true hero

Luigi gets a year dedicated to him, and he gets two rip-offs of existing Mario games, one cashgrab sequel, and the death of Danny Wells.
Also the video made a -connection- between Luigi and the Wii U and somehow didn't mention that Luigi is once again ignored in Odyssey and tossed into a pointless DLC.
(Plus the fact they ignored Luigi's Mansion which everyone else already pointed out two years ago)

You know, no matter what insult you say to Luigi. he's still got a majorly hot girlfriend who is also a princess of a different kingdom. and frankly, if you look at it objectively. Luigi has a great life. he has a large group of people who love him, a beautiful and rich lover. and let's be real, he might be living under his brother's shadow. but he got famous because of his brother giving him that chance.

in The Thousand Year Door, Luigi goes on his own epic offscreen adventure, it gets turned into a very expensive, glowing biography, and a genius detective mistakes Mario for him. Also, I think one of the chapters had him play some grass in a theater production. Which is very brave.

In the Switch success where Mario Odyssey is huge and well acclaimed, Luigi too did do well I believe on Switch as well (I personally loved Luigi-s mansion 3 and from many reviewers many can agree it was outstanding sales wise I-m actually unsure tho)

Nintendo:
Make game.
Call it -luigi-s challenge
What happen?
Raffle to enter competition
Luigi gets in but not mario or any other
Luigi gets a chance
To prove
Himself
And gets an upgrade
For the new decade

I think Luigis inferioty complex is born mostly as a result of Nintendo never developing their characters. ever. But if I were to come up with a justification for it I would say he has autism.
reply

I mean the first time we saw luigi get scared, was the first time we heard him speak. Maybe he wasn-t always the punching bag, but he was definitely scared before we knew he was.
reply

Wait did he call them twins? I never realized that! Thinking back I think it stems from the live action movie where they are totally different ages, crazy.
reply

it's unfortunate, luigi is my favorite character and always has been. I'm replaying the mario and luigi series, and Luigi is always the punching bag
reply

Even before the super show, there was a commercial for Mario Bros on the Atari 2600 where Luigi is calling for Mario-s help and running away from koopas.

Nobody likes filler comments, but I just HAD TO even it out.

reply

no i dont like him hes bad and he makes me very upset. nothing would make me more happy than to punt luigi out of existence.
reply

Yeah but at least Dream Team sort of let him shine with him being an important character in terms of actual plot substance.
reply

Eh, year of Luigi was a year of Wii U. Nintendo losing money that year had little to do with Luigi at all
