It's been a tumultuous few years for VR, but there's light at the end of the tunnel. Here are three reasons why now is the best time to invest in virtual reality

I think you've touched on a really important point. VR IS EXPERIENCE. There are great -games- for VR, but if you were to put them in a console, most people would give them poor ratings. But imagine a big budget Disney ride sold as a console game. You would have the same people giving it poor ratings and tagging it on steam as -not a game. - Keep your expectations in check when buying VR. You'll experience a ton of mindblowing things, but you will never give up your game console to play games. VR and Consoles are two different mediums with strengths to them, and I see them both sticking around for quite some time.

Imagine a future where you don't go to the park, but you get to go to some place that looks like Rivendell in LOTR. I think VR will one day become good enough where you barely realize it isn't real. Live in the woods and want to go to the desert (or vice versa) for a day? Step into a VR world. I want to see the day where it really feels like you're flying around in the air, and you just pick a spot on the earth and explore, in the way a bird could. It will be so much more than gaming, and I think we will even use it as a low cost way to train people to do jobs in the future.

Windows MR has not been mentioned but it's by far the best value in my mind. Because you don't need the sensors or the PlayStation Eye I can take it anywhere my laptop goes (and it doesn't require much of a PC to run) You can get a Samsung Odyssey + for as low as $300 and it has something like 5x the resolution of the PSVR. It's far superior for Media, and there's only a few games that don't track very well- but others do. so I wonder if it's more of a software support problem then a hardware issue.

I tried out VR for the first time at school and again at a game expo. it's honestly so fun and way more immersive than I ever expected it to be. I also saw some lads playing a vr shooting game while harnessed to these little holders that let them run around and move in game while staying in the same spot since the 'floor' was angled so every step they took just returned their foot to the same spot. The future is now basically

VR hype is pretty much over in Germany, there is like no chance for a comeback. The initial issues are still there, also not addressed in the video, VR headsets may actually not fit your head. Motion sickness has been ignored by most developers which is also a big issue.
But I can see why you actually want a bigger user base for VR, that way developers are motivated to create more content.

it baffles me that there was no discussion about windows mixed reality. especially samsung's odyssey. The hardware is far cheaper than the alternatives and doesn't require setting up 'polygons'. you dont need a large open space as well
It is obvious that the content creator is very inexperienced with VR and should not be making videos about VR until he has done his research

give it like 3 or 5 years when it's super cheap and the graphics are AWESOME. Like its great now. It's a little expensive and you do need the PC but it will just get better and better. Find a friend who has one and try it out.
Please don't get ones that make you use a phone on your face it's bad vibes. brain cancer shit

As someone with VR I'd only recommend doing it now if you like more arcadey experiences and have money to burn on a buncha games. Don't get me wrong its a great experience, its just I can see a lot of people going -oh cool but is that it? - And yes the degeneracy is great too.

Lol then was a ok time to get vr but 2020/2021 was quite literally the best year for vr with now two completely stand alone headsets oculus quest 1 and 2 and now we have affordable 4k vr with the reverb G2 and new vr headsets and accessories being leaked all the time
reply

I had a DK2 when they first came out. Take that -trying to convince people what VR actually is- pain you feel now, and multiply it by ten thousand. People thought it was just 3D TV. They would not stop believing that, and no one could try it. It was infuriating.
reply

Some advice: if a shitty, cardboard, phone-reliant vr is your first experience you will prolly end up pretty disappointed. Do yourself a favor and see if you can find some kinda vr arcade near you and try on a big boy vive. Shit will take your breath away

And since this video, the Quest has been getting updated regularly, now able to function as a PC headset if you plug it in. Also controller-free hand tracking. Don't get me wrong, we're still in the early days, but MAN, we're progressing fast.
reply

Why no one mentions Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) Headsets?
They have excellent display and response, doesn't need trackers/pylons and they're very cheap
It's quite sad that they have such good specs and no recognition from the media.

reply

The name VR is a mistake as these are not Virtual Reality set rather Virtual Vision and Interaction sets VVI for sort for a set. For something to be considered VR it will have to stimulate if not replace signals for all 5 senses.
reply

would have been nice if you mentioned Windows Mixed Reality, as its a very good entry into pc vr which shares the no pylon tech (inside out tracking) of the quest, and can be acquired for under 200 dollars sometimes.
reply

VR is great, it's just been a slow burn and didn't take over the world over night like some people seemed to expect. It'll just get bigger and bigger until it becomes as ubiquitous as normal video games.
reply

VR doesn't get great until it is two 8k screens and a typical PC, Xbox X or Playstation Pro isn't anywhere near enough computing power to run that. So until it is VR isn't going to go ballistic yet.
reply

Nah, not for me. I like more the games with story, good characters and usually in third person. VR games tend to be small games, usually with first person and mostly focused in indie gameplays.
reply

I've tried out the quest and made a game on it in a VR game development jam! Its super smooth, easy to develop with (relatively, okay that's kinda not true) and pretty immersive!
reply

If it's going to be anything like console gaming they will rerelease the same games each year with minor improvements. There is no rush to buy one now. You are not gonna miss out imo.
reply

PS vr is good but honestly it-s really hard to enjoy using due to one camera on your TV right in front of you
Edit: oh yeah, long term pc is cheaper then console but eh

reply

Am I the only one unhappy with this industry-wide race to the bottom? -Am I the only one who wants a -better- VR rig instead of just cheaper-and-cheaper ones?
reply

Ok ok im not even like 40 seconds in and he bashed ready player one dude it wasnt to promote the vr sets its about a boooooookk it didnt suck u suck
reply

This is apologist propaganda with an agenda, biggest problem for VR is people hanging the headset after a few weeks or months, for good, and nausea.
reply

No mention of Windows Mixed Reality, the fully functional PCVR headset, with the lowest PC requirements, and lowest cost of entry? For shame!
reply

so driving games VR still need to use remote control. Just get into the VR world but nothing changes much.
Will there be MOBA or MMO for VR?

reply

Ready Player One was actually a good movie. Just couldn't include everything the book had or else it would've been a 4 hour movie.
reply

I dont own a VR headset but i have used one and its fun and i had no real problem other than being amazed by it.
I want one.

reply

the exact same arguments were made about 3d TV. This caters to the people who gobble up all the latest and greatest, that is it.
reply

If people try daydream and oculus go they won't be impressed. I think 6 dof and controllers is what's gonna bring it to everyone
