Two things:
1: Didn't gaming's Greedy Shot First happen around 2011-2012 when the endings of Portal 1 and Mass Effect 3 were changed in patches? Portal 1's ending was subtly changed to tie it in with Portal 2. Of course a lot of people hated the original ending of ME3, so I guess not that many actually cared, but today you can not play Portal 1 or ME3 like they were at release.
While not story based, Team Fortress 2 has similarly changed after release, though if you own the 360 or PS3 versions of The Orange Box, the original games are still on there - owners of the PC version have an entirely different game today than what they had in 2008, and have no official means of playing the game they originally purchased.
2. As an European I can't speak for the US, but e-sports was already huge here before the 2010s, I'm not even quite sure it's gotten bigger - seems like the attempts to replace the big esports games of the 00s largely failed in the 10s - StarCraft 1 and Counter-strike 1. 0 have aired on national TV here since about 2003, and neither StarCraft 2 nor CSGO managed to replace them, the tournaments at DreamHack etc. are still dominated by the original games from the late 90s.
DOTA seems like the only real example where the sequel and spinoffs actually dethroned the original, with League of Legends and DOTA 2 being huge esports things these days, and the MOBA esports scenes have unquestionable gotten bigger this decade than they ever were in the 00s, but I'm still going to say that esports was huge since at least 2005, and haven't really exploded since, just kept on growing.

I am a little confused by your physical game sales going down statistic. Is this only accounting for brand new games? I ask since retro gaming has continued to explode over the past decade and is likely to keep growing into this decade. With more people collecting and more demand for modern physical games arise, places like Super Rare Games, Limited Run Games, and Strictly Limited Games have been carving out a space for indie titles to get physical releases. Even though Gamestop may not be doing as well, I have seen independent game stores propping up around the country with one even taking the place of an old Gamestop two towns over from where I grew up. OC, this is my opinion so feel free to push back, this is just based on my experience and knowledge of the marketplaces and I am open to having a conversation about it.

I don't think her assertions about AI being a flop are entirely fair. If you've been following the research space, you'll know that a lot of groundbreaking work has been done in the past year or two with artificial neural networks doing dynamic character animation, speech synthesis, terrain and texture generation, and more. Some of these solutions are very robust and practically just waiting for a game to incorporate them.
It's true that AI hasn't disrupted the way we make games quite yet, but to portray the technology as stillborn seems inaccurate.

I personally think -esports- needs a new name, Video Games are not sports, sports demand physical activity. Chess is not a sport, Fortnite is not a sport. For people who call Video Games sport, I would love to take two -athletes-, one being a Gamer and another a -real athlete- and pit them against each other in another sport that they both do not play. I can guarantee that the -real athlete- will always win because they actually train their bodies.

This videos was released on December 19th and that-s how they-re treating VR? Really? With all major headsets sold out for Christmas and a massive backorder I file? Really? Wow. 2020 is literally going to be the -Year of VR- because of Oculus Quest. I have a feeling from this point forward VR will become a bigger and bigger part of the gaming industry.

Video game industry didn't peak in the 2000's, but this year it has reached a point where very successful companies have laid off hundreds of employees, which indicates that their profit were not increasing as expected despite monetization of game being at an all time high (see Jim Sterling's rant.

We do have the technology to make photorealistic games we don't have personal computers that can render it in anywhere close to realtime or the manpower to populate an environment with it.
If we built a super computer to play a game and threw billions at the production we could have it now.

I, too, love the way romance works in stardew valley, and it is the vessel that gives me hope that someday I too can raise void chickens, marry a depressed recovering alcoholic and an artist who makes me sculptures. stardew valley is the peak of gaming and nothing will ever convince me otherwise.

I dont play games to feel like real life, so I seriously don't understand the emergence of VR, live-action and full-motion-video (FMV) games in 2017-2019. To me those aren't really games, they're too limited and really - its just watching a movie with extra steps, without letting you relax or reflect.

Everyone's acting like it's a big surprise that we have Virtual Reality now, but my dad is kicking me in the backside for not inventing the Oculus Rift when he told me to create a virtual reality system back in 1997. I was 6, Dad.

in 2010 on one of the playstation forums I mentioned that future is gonna be filled with great indie-games, and only in them alone you should seek truly interesting experience, and people laughed. well, who's laughing now?

This was a long video about nothing interesting, or funny. Then upon reading the comments, this all made sense.
Is Polygon just an entire network of socially awkward people afflicted with Dunning-Kruger syndrome?

Gamification ended up ruining Duolingo for me. I found I was too stressed to beat other learners with my score than actually learning, basically grinding to get points. So I just said f- it and uninstalled it.

Milo was a standalone tech demo. I've seen an internal video of the project and spoken to a developer who worked on it. There was more than what was shown off, but it was never intended as a game.

Great video! For future videos can you make sure to put text pop ups (the predictions and categories) at the top to not get in the way of subtitles please? Thank you!

Photorealism is a moving target. You can always achieve greater photorealism. Even when games are truly -photorealistic, - there will be more improvements to make.

LOL. She won't dunk on any of the journalists who made bad predictions, but then happily shows footage of Peter Molyneux making an ass of himself yet again.

Euclidian had massive potential with their atom technology eliminating the use of polygons but it-s too bad we haven-t heard much from them in a while.

I kinda agree that video games had peaked round 2009, it's been downhill from then in my humble opinion. Not economically of course.
