We trekked up to PAX East 2020 to talk to Hugo Martin, creative director of DOOM Eternal, and show him a bunch of real life objects that inspired his latest game. Watch Hugo geek out over Doom 64, He-Man, The Last Boy Scout, RoboCop, Ursula (yes, from The Little Mermaid, Evil Dead 2, Iron Maiden, and Pacific Rim
Date: 2023-12-10

When I heard -Saw- I had flashbacks of the things my friends told me about it in primary school and looked away as soon as some clips started showing up, and then Hugo says --We Don't want people to grimace and look away, we want people to look forward and smile. - and Im like dang dude you nailed it
Also thank you -Polygon for not showing too much

Hugo interviews so well. It's so refreshing to hear a lead on a project like Doom speaking like a normal human being who actually enjoys things. These people give a shit about what they are doing, they are having fun with it, and that's why Doom Eternal turned out so damned good. And yes, Doom 64 is the best of the 90's Doom games.

Hugo Martin sounds like a big name for me. These Dooms have been excellent. And Hugo Martin's love and eloquence around its art just makes it better. Thank you Hugo Martin for bringing back Doom for a new generation.

Please don-t tell me I-m the only one who has seen the similarities between the predator from the 1980-s movie and the suit from doom eternal. Shoulder cannon and blade attached to the arm.
Or maybe it isn-t.

This is like Nardwar for devs, but way less awkward and invasive.
Edit from literally 15 seconds later: I love Nardwar and understand his process and appreciate his confrontational interview style.

What a great and funny man! I almost certain how much they enjoyed while making Doom. Dude literally put everything he loved into game that something what every game producer should do

In DooM eternal I can feel the vibes of two of favorite films of all time: Starship troopers (1997) and Hellboy of Guillermo del Toro, maybe that makes it one of my favorite games

The year was 94 and I was 6 years old. We got a Gateway computer and my dad brought home doom 2 on floppy disc. Naturally he let me play and it-s been my favorite game ever since.

Only polygon would bring out an Ursula plush. You just know she is whispered about in their circles as some trans idol. Hugo as expected disregards Ursula and talks about Disney.

Very interesting insight into the aesthetic design of the game, never would have known this were it not for this video. I always thought the game was very weird artistically.

This guy not only watches the little mermaid he KNOWS the story, and this is the same guy that made DOOM eternal, I don-t know why but I somehow respect him even more -

So on Saturday May 9th, Doom eternal had a double XP weekend. I played quite a bit and as a reward had my stats were reset. Can anyone help me reconcile this issue?

Hugo's whole thing on Robocop made me think. If Doomguy was the second coming of Christ, think of how many people would instantly convert to Christianity.
reply

I like this guy. He's very earnest, and that's something you don't see often in people who's trying to promote their game. Or their _anything, _ really.

That revenant that brings you your super shotgun I always spare it it be cool if it could hop in at some point and help you fight things that be cool

Doom 64 was Hugo Martin-s introduction to Doom. That being said, I-m sure he-s really glad seeing Nightdive Studios porting it to modern consoles.
reply

-Much like doom being like a Saturday morning cartoon- is Martin trying to convince himself this isn-t one of the most violent games ever made? Lol
reply

The fact that they didn't want to emulate Saw and Hostel earns my respect. There is just zero appeal to me from gross -horror- movies.

I wish you guys keep up this style of series; I would die for a -What's in My Box-/-Criterion Closet- type series with game directors
reply

I thought it was weird when he said Doom Eternal was inspired in some bits by Disney but after the explanation, I totally get it.
reply

The Evil Dead trilogy also inspired Doom I and II with its demons and weapons (particularly the chainsaw and super shotgun.

Thank you Id and Bethesda for give to this guy a relevant position in the industry. We need more guys like this
