How devs break bones to make animation feel right

Smear frames are body horror snuck into seemingly normal video game animations. There was a time when smears were vital in games, but they don-t happen much any more, and there-s a very good reason for their disappearance. With help from the animators of Overwatch and Cuphead, Jenna Stoeber is going to teach you how these weird smears make animation better, and why we don't see them as often as we used to

Back in the days I remember when playing Marvel Super Heroes War of the Gems in arcades. I used to think really cool that -approach- of distorting chars exageratedly, specially when someone was hit by a gem activation or finished by a super that freezes the K. O frame for some seconds and you can see how distorted char became. Used to think like -wow, this is so catoonish and fits so we'll- but had no idea there was so much animation fundamentals behind that. Capcom animation team back in the days was a breast

I still I don't get why drawing the movement -correctly- with multiple frames following the action would look -choppy-. If the movement is animated with many frames and is still fast, shouldn't the eyes still be unable to distinguish frame per frame and perceive the action as a quick -blur- anyway, even more realistically? Is there a reason for using frames outside of money and deadlines?

As soon as the video started I thought of how smears were probably used heavily in Hit-s design in Dragon Ball Fighterz, glad Jenna touched on that.
They did so well in making that character, the animation really sells that this is someone who can manipulate time

I really didnt enjoy the Nsane trilogy from crash exactly because of these little things. The originals still look so much more dinamic because of them, besides as you said Crash was always set to be a cartoon himself, and the devs really pushed it to get that feeling.

Why everyone think there is only devs in video games. i am 3D animator and i hate that, this is not the work of devs, this is the work of riggers to build the rig to allow that, and the work of animators to smear the rig, but overall this is a good video.

I was expecting motion blur be mentioned in this video. In my opinion, swear was created to imitate this motion blur effect, but when it comes to 3D render we can compute the motion blur itself. Thus, smear isnt popular nowadays.

I wish you touched on Guilty Gear Strive in this video, the way the animators have incorporated smears into their 3D models is super interesting and goes far more in depth than their work on FighterZ

But isn't that due to the limitations of fps? I'd imagine that if an animation is played in 60+ fps, you wouldn't need to use smear at all because our brain would just do that for you. no?

As an animator, thank you, but I wish I had seen this before I did the whole college mistake, this would have sufficed.

I'm surprised League of Legends isn't on here. Riot even made one or two official threads about this with Xayah and Poppy as examples.

Just the animation for Overwatch got me hooked into the game just because how smooth and detailed the animations were
reply

Wow, I thought i was going crazy by not being able to see the actions on certain games frame by frame. Very cool!

Damn. Watching this video reminds me how good Overwatch is, and then I remembered the blizzard marketing team.

obsessed with among us, the game made by a flash animation team, being the -least expected- smear example lmaoo
reply

0. o they are hand designed smears and not some post processing effect, that is super interesting, thanks

I can't believe this entire video about smears in 3d animation you did not once talk about Guilty Gear
