If you watched the trailer for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin and thought to yourself, Who's the DILF? then I'm afraid we've got some news: Jack's t-shirt is actually fashion. Jenna Stoeber explains the logic behind Tetsuya Nomura's ground-breaking character design of man in t-shirt

Lol I hate it. He really looks like a guy you would see stopping to get coffee down the street on his way to work and not give a second glance, in a FF game. That shirt, I promise I've seen it at the Gap and they just made the bottom asymmetrical. He sticks out from being so unbelievably plain, even his friends look insane because of the contrast standing next to him. Fashion or not, it's as interesting to look at as plain oatmeal, but that is most actual male fashion so I guess lol. And I don't buy that it's because of his age, there have been loads of older male characters like Auron, Jecht, Nooj, Cid, Ardyn, Tellah, etc, none of them have looked like they just walked out of the Zara down the street lol.

At 40 years of age, I will attest having never worn anything so boring as. -Jack. - God even his name is generic.
I've always worn some personal effects or accessory no matter my attire.
Further more, if I were a warrior by trade I'd probably be wearing, oh I dunno, armor? Headgear? An actual harness for the sword the size of my body that I somehow believe will be useful in hallways?
The original designs for FF characters have a surreal vibrance to them and feel, ya know, like they are from a fantasy story.
This guy looks like he wants to sell me some gross smelling men's cologne called something like -leather whisky. - It makes me feel -bored aggression. -

I think my biggest problem with Jack is that my favorite thing about the FF series was getting to play as kpop pretty boys who can still kill god and satan in one go.
Now the new one's protagonist is the same white guy that leads every Western AAA game. Even if he was dressed better, I would've preferred a woman if they wanted mature.
It's not that there's nothing good in his design, it's that the good parts are offsetting an incredibly boring base idea.

reply

So. I am the only one who like his design?
I always had a problem with the design of final fantasy characters. Always teenagers who talk and behave like tortured adults dressed with over-complicated clothes and doesn't look like anything and most important. Ridiculous Haircuts!
For once it looks a bit cooler to me! (except when he talks about -ChAoS-)

given the fact he looks like a quasi-dipshit and character arcs are a thing, i assume he'll visually signify his growth as a person who believes in the magic of friendship and lasers (or whatever final fantasy is, ive never been to one) by gaining colourful bracers, spiky scarves, and ten-foot-tall golden iceskates by the end of the game.
reply

He looks like a background character in the final fantasy universe, nothing wrong with that. Having a normal guy suits the everyman status of a protagonist, I think we-re just used to over the top characters and not a guy who looks like he was pulled out of a traffic jam to go save the world.
reply

Okay, but fashion is dumb. Fashion has never been about looking good it's been about looking -unique- so whether or not Jack has fashion, he still looks boring af for final fantasy. If you want a more mature looking character that can still look interesting take a look at Original dad Nier.
reply

. also his name is boring. -Jack- does not sound like the name of a Final Fantasy protagonist when we've had the likes of Noctis, Cloud, and Lightning. What's interesting about a dude in his 30s named -Jack- who, according the trailer, seems to have exactly one (1) finishing move.
reply

As a man who is -Older- I fully expect the hero of the new -Mature- Dragon Quest game to just drag his weary carcass out of bed, grab his favorite faded band T-shirt/blue jeans combo and spend a decent chunk of his would-be adventuring time making small repairs around the house.
reply

I'm totally onboard with having an older protagonist in FF, but c'mon, there has to a middle ground between full Final Fantasy camp and just some dude I might see in LA? The design doesn't read FF at all, even when compared to what we've seen with other characters in this game
reply

Lightning has Cloud beat by 500 years of age, making her a whopping 521 years old by the time of Lightning Returns.
But she doesn't act a day older than her age in the previous games which is a grizzled old.
--checks notes--
21. Ah, yeah. 21.

I'll be -that guy-:
ACKSHULLY Zidane wasn't designed by Nomura. Yoshitaka Amano did the character designs for FF9, while Nomura would have been working on FF10 at the time. So you can blame Zidane's belt on Mr. Scarves himself.

reply

Maybe this is Nomura saying -You don't like my OTT fashion designs and think all the characters are overly-emotional sissies? Fine! I'll give you the worst version of everything you love in your dull gritty western action games! -
reply

Bad design is bad design no matter how you explain the bad design. -30-something nobody in plain t-shirt- is not a protagonist, it's the MMO cardboard cutout.
This isn't a character, it's an NPC.

reply

honestly Jack is only like, 0. 5 degrees more plain looking than Noctis in the wardrobe department. What stands out to me is that his name is just -Jack- and not like, Jaghcht or something
reply

So happy Estelle got a shout as an over the top fashionable JRPG protagonist. If anyone hasn-t played trails in the sky, do yourself a favor and play them. They-re the absolute best
reply

-Simple Dad fashion- actually is an aesthetic I can get behind.
I want to make fun of people for calling, like, every older character a DILF, but I can-t because I do it too.

reply

I'd love to see a return to the pre-FF7 costume design. Nothing against the current design philosophy, but it would be nice to see a revival cuz is such a cool distinct style.
reply

3: 10 Believe it or not I was born in the year 1987. And I-m exactly 34 years old! It-s more than likely that I-ll end up dead, and the series might die along with me: )
reply

I call his default outfit -pajama jack- - but for real FF characters are 15year old teens swinging around a 500pound steel/titanium swords it-s pretty hilarious -
reply

Okay his outfits fine ig butttttt that shirt look really really dumb, seriously if it looked more like the traditional version it wouldnt bother me that much.
reply

Ahahaha i have had the opposite fashion progression since I-m 34 years old and pretty much always dress like Ms Frizzle, but spent my youth in tshirts and jeans
reply

Thank you Jenna, for another video on Final Fantasy fashion! Also I definitely laughed at the simple title misreading. The setup was perfect.
reply

Also probably worth mentioning is this is just his base outfit, you can in fact give him armor in-game if you don't like the mall dad vibe
reply

I mean his outfit portrais his personality very well. The no Bs, get straight to the point kind of attitude correliates with his outfit.
reply

You know who else hated chaos, had steel blue eyes, blonde hair, and understated yet still stylish emo-esque dress?
The Nazis.

reply

Counterpoint: in a world of overcomplicated outfits, Jack is a trendsetter. HE is the epitome of street fashion in final fantasy.
reply

As someone who's designs clothes for art I really appreciate jacks outfit, drawings the typical FF outfit is a nightmare.
reply

This dude looks like every single old white man in every single video game. He legit looks like an a. I generated character.
reply

Each and every time This lifesize Chad shows up New Gold comes from his mouth, and i'm more and more into it
