Monster Hunter Rise should let me hunt Pennywise

video description

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
Capcom's Monster Hunter Rise is full of fantastical monsters to hunt, skin, and turn into fashion. But for a high-level hunter, there has to be something more. Jenna Stoeber investigates what creature Capcom should add to Monster Hunter Rise's next DLC, and comes to a surprising and terrible conclusion. It's time to hunt Pennywise. Yes, from IT. You've seen the thumbnail. You know what I'm talking about

i mean, she's not wrong but she hasn't understood the point of the game.
the monster are not bosses, they are just part of the world and basically just random critters that just happen to be 10 times bigger/stronger than you; the monsters do change their tactic as the fight goes on, if you use the same moves over and over again the monster will start punishing you for it.
you aren'T traped but the area where you are is very much an arena with it's differents architectures, traps and all;
and the monsters are all there to test what you'Ve learn during the game even more so in rise where they punish you for not using wirefall and such,
And as for the escalation parts, most of the actual monsters escalate the level of difficulty of the fight when they enrage which happen at certain treshold of the fight, and the actual Bosses monster like Narwa literally get stronger as you get farther in the fight.
Monster hunter is not a game about boss fight, is a game about going toe-to-toe against random creatures in a world that is so hostile that everything can be seen as a boss fight, honing your skills, upgrading your gear until you can climb the ladder and become the actual apex predator the this world until a now more powerful monster comes and take your place or die trying.

We all know that Simone is weird and most likely possessed by a a spirit of an ancient Tibetan Monk who wishes only chaos. Karen all the time tiny silent way waltzes her way to the pure domination. Pat is this guy who seems almost always grumpy but doing his utmost best at being a good sport despite being surrounded by crazy people. Clayton is the man on whos shoulders rests the entire thing. But Jenna. Jenna terrifies me. It's like seeing the only adult in a room full of children when oh so sweet person completely destroys everyone in the vicinity either by logic and outstanding smarts or by being a creative genius. Pick one! You can't hoard all the talents. Just tell me you also trained Tom Brady and made Michael Phelps cry an Olympic swimming pool. And Meryl Streep surrenders het bazilion Oscars to your temple.
PS: And we don't talk about BDG. We just need to have an intervention and just share his gigantic stash of cocaine among the community.

I agree that hunts in MH aren't boss fights, and listening to your points I can't help but feel like MH is a game where the players are the boss fight. The enemies try to run and limp away to a safe space only to learn that we'll keep following them and sneak up on them when they sleep. We take away their options and force them to try new approaches when we take their tails away.
It even makes sense when you look at the name. We are the hunters, they are the prey.

I treat the Monsters more as animals then bosses: imagine you are a hunter and you see a teostra minding his own business, you're here to kill him because you Want that sweet sharpness boost but the teostra don't Want to be anywhere close you. it's YOU who are disturbing his peace so it's more the teostra being the protag and you being the boss

Escalation. Zinogre-s whole deal is escalation. Gotta stop him from charging up. Goss Harag, goes from blue punchy, to red faced giant arm blades. All the elder dragons have nova-s that go off if you don-t stop them from powering their aura up. The last boss literally eats another boss to power itself up midway through the fight.

Excellent if odd video and theory. but I found it kind of hilarious that your example of a one off boss was Sephiroth xD, in his intro game yeah you finish him off once but. he has come back to bother cloud so many times xD. though I suppose that is true of most major franchises big bads. still funny xD

wouldn't megaman starforce bosses fit here too? they already have the rights for them and the ones in starforce 2 aren't unique, Le Mu makes a ton of copies of the EM beings that create the bosses. they dont fit as well as pennywise does, but since starforce is already capcom, seems more feasible.
reply

Speaking of escalation in difficulty, every sentence in this video was like a new and more forceful blow to the head. I knew they were coming, I'd read the title of the video before clicking, but still I was unprepared for the onslaught.
Truly, this is the bossfight of all polygon videos.

You can't hunt Pennywise because they have yet to perfect the Anxiometer, which will measure your subconscious physiological reaction to all the lower tier monsters, and use that information to procedurally generate the form It takes for the final, epic boss battle. Maybe PS6.

Honestly I'd love to see a Xenomorph Queen as a guest monster. Its Big, there are canonically hundreds if not thousands of them in Alien lore, it fits well with the Brute Wyvern skeleton, and there are some fun things you could do with its acid blood as a mechanic

Maybe if World had a longer life this might have been a faint possibility (we got Leshen from the Witcher and Behemoth from FF)
But Rise feels like a cheapskate mobile compared to World when it comes to free content.

Two things I do not care about at all, Pennywise and Monster Hunter Rise. Yet Jenna and the Polygon team created an extraordinarily entertaining video that I am very glad I watched. Top-notch work as always Polygon.
reply

What. What was the point of this video? Did I miss something? Aren't all the monsters in monster hunter rise made up? This is like a hypothetical argument based on top of a hypothetical situation. Is that the joke?
reply

I really don't want to be that person but now I know that I can safely say that not just anyone should be able to make articles, like who in the right mind would see this game and think. Pennywise! SMH!
reply

I kind of feel bad hunting monsters in the game, most of them seem to just be chilling out in the wild and then you just come to annoy them and slay them just to get profit from their dead corpses x_ x
reply

Someone the most outrageous and unbelievable statement in this video about skinning a clown is Jenna saying -I've never been bullied-
I thought you were one of us, Jenna, how could you

reply

I mean, yeah, it's because the fights in MH are not boss fights, they're hunts, that's something completely different. Of course they don't fit in boss fight standards
reply

Rise is super simplified and casualized MH. Try plying >3rd gen games and you'll see that even a Yian kut-kut feels like a boss fight. Good point on the video tho.
reply

I read IT this month and ive just been sitting on -pennywise is a girlboss- not knowing what to do with the information. Im so happy to see someone talk about it
reply

Oh, MH Rise's monsters are not unique because they are entire species, not that their designs are boring.
--saying this, I casually threw aside a large rock. --

-Eating clown steak by dinner- isn't something I thought I'd ever hear but there it is. Probably wouldn't be any good though. Heard it tastes funny.
reply

-The direct and indirect areas should be roughly 50/50-
-sound of Jenna casually sliding bullet hells under the table hoping you don't notice-

reply

You guys are keep saying -lack off, lack off- but no one said all monster in monster hunter series are boss fights. We are just chilling and hunting.
reply

I want you to know that at the next ad after you said muenster cheese, it was a capital one ad about a couple who owns a cheese store
reply

I learned a lot about boss fight design! And also many things I didn't want to learn about, but I appreciate the video nonetheless.
reply

When a joke meme video has more depth, consistent intrigue, and fair points, than your typical video game review article.
reply

-if it's harder to get to the boss then defeat it, somethings wrong with the game balance-
- sweats in hollowknight -

reply

I think if your definition of boss fight doesn't include standard monster hunts it's the definition that's wrong
reply

Are the dings in this the same as the Microsoft to-do completed task sound? It's making me feel productive
reply

Jenna-s always been great, but she-s really hitting her stride this year. Ty for the amazing quality content.
