Left 4 Dead is still the perfect zombie game

Left 4 Dead (and L4D2) have inspired so many games it's practically created a genre all it's own. But what made Left 4 Dead so special in the first place, and how do all these newly announced Left4Dead-a-likes stack up?

Vermintide's difficulty isn't designed to wholly match to you and that's the point. Vermintide is supposed to be unforgiving, especially at higher difficulties.
I have played 100's of hours of L4D2 and Vermintides 1 and 2, and I admit my friends will always enjoy casually hopping into a L4D2 campaign. However, it will never compare to mastering the combat in Vermintide. The pace at which you can cut through the opposition if you have good movement and aim outclasses any feeling L4D2 provides IMO.
Also, you get the progression/customisation of Vermintide (weapons/perks/outfits) while still retaining the story and lovable characters that helped define the genre L4D created.
L4D2 does have a great community which fully utilises it's capacity for modding however, which has definitely extended the longevity of an already genre-defining game.

YA the sound design for l4d alwyas stuck out to me. admittedly it was the first rated 18 game hat me and my sister played (age 9 and 8, we snuck into our oldest brothers room to play it while he was working, and we had an almost completely silent system worked out thru voicelines alone, even tho we were sitting in the same room together. it aslo made playing co op online a lot easier and genuinely safer as bebes who WERE way too young to be playing, since it was so easy to communicate to other players without using voice chat

I dislike people regurgitating the marketing hype of left 4 dead's director. Tons of games before and since have used similar difficulty modulation systems, often to great success. Frequently these went unremarked upon in ad copy because it wasn't relevant to the experience - why talk about the difficulty system when you could talk about the gameplay - but left 4 dead gets all this credit because they were the first ones to give it a catchy name and slap it on the back of the box as a selling point? It rubs me the wrong way.

I think it's important to note that Vermintide 2 didn't want to emulate L4D2's AI directed difficulty curve. The ability to select the difficulty level before the game gives each level much more structure than L4D2's variability. Makes Vermintide a more challenging and tactical game, opposed to L4D2 being more of a chill with friends sort of affair; both are fantastic in their own ways! Darktide looks a lot of fun too, so here's hoping the devs push the Vermintide formula even further

Great to see mention of Deep Rock Galactic. It's the only L4D-like that I've truly loved since Valve's original games, and I think a lot of that is because, like L4D and its sequel, it just has so much damn CHARACTER. I mean, it's fantastically fun and in some cases even outmatches L4D in terms of pure adrenaline-pumping triumphant mission successes, but I believe both games do a great job of creating an atmosphere that as entertaining and funny as it is challenging.

Honestly, the combat of l4d2 feels super clunky after playing vermintide2 for so long, you feel like you can barely move around without a good dodge move,
but yeah, vermintide2 is designed so that you keep moving and actually try and get through the level as fast as possible or you'll get killed via horde atrition alone,
definitely a completely different feeling to the slow and paced out l4d2 AI director

To me, what makes L4D so good is the ability to do 4v4 and play as the special monsters, trading off between monsters and players to see who can get further through the maps. It's the reason my friends and I still play L4D2 after all this time. If I can only play as the protagonists (as in the World War Z game, these new games are not going to have much staying power for me.

And then there's the witch! So many memorable gaming moments have come from witch encounters. The way her mechanic totally switches the gameplay around from run and gun to BE QUIET AND AVOID has created some of the most tense and fun gameplay experiences I've ever had

I honestly don't think anything can top l4d, but I'm willing to try them all. The series has a unique flavor that imo requires the source engine and nuances. For instance, b4b's melee and shove systems are awful as they were crucial to any expert run in l4d.

i'm surprised that this didn't go more in depth, considering that back 4 blood is actually in beta right now. anyone who preorders can get in, and i would have thought a major outlet like polygon would have gotten review copies by now

In total agreement, Vermintide 2 did NAIL the music/sound design aspect. I can't think of another game where the music genuinely raises my heart rate every time I hear it. I use fully half the songs off the OST in my D&D playlists.

I want to believe Cloverfield ruined your life. Or teilight did because you became obssesed. Because the film is overly hated, and it doesnt seem too original and kind of exagerated to say it -ruined- your life for not liking it

I-m a TOTAL wimp when it comes to horror movies and games, but something about left 4 dead made it still playable and enjoyable. Great break down of the game, thanks for helping me understand why I might like this game so much!

It's so weird that I got back into this game independently of any hype ( I didn't even know about the update from last year) and suddenly everyone's getting back into this game coincidentally at the same time. Awesome but weird!

the adjustment of difficulty is quiet common in games
so that it gives you more/less enemies or health packs depending how you are playing
it's a dynamic difficulty, I would not call it -AI- since it's pretty simple.

Can we get a video discussing deep rock galactic? It's a game I love, and more people should play, because I have had moments where I thought I was gonna have a heart attack immediately followed by laughing like a maniac
reply

if neither L4D was completely moddable, do you think these games would even be remembered now? I don't think so, because I wouldn't call them perfect but I'll always appreciate they set up this new horde coop genre
reply

vermintide 2 is tough and i love it. not to sound like a douche but i just don't think you were good at the game then. it isn't overwhelming, there are difficulty levels for exactly that reason too.

As someone who spent way too many hours playing L4D2, I'm excited about all four of the games mentioned. I would love to see one of them improve on what made the game great.
reply

tbh playing l4d with mods on is a nigh spiritual experience. especially when everyone playing has the same mods so you can yell -OH SHIT IT'S SANDY- over the voice call
reply

I'm most hyped for Darktide. I really liked having the class system in vermintide and I always wanted a left 4 dead where you could specialize.

L4D2 Had some of the best mods. My favourite was the Zoidberg mod all normal Zombies are now Zoidberg and they all make the Wubwubwub sound

Really would have guessed this would be a Jenna or Simone video, but I-m pleasantly surprised to discover that it-s a Josh video

I don't know any of these games and I can't understand what this guy is saying since I don't know 50% of the words he's saying?

Good breakdown of the unique aspects of Left 4 Dead series, and how it influenced (or didn't influence) the aforementioned other games!

Yknow, I've been yeeted off the building by Tank too, but I get the feeling that was _extremely_ formative for 2008 Josh
reply

Left fpr dead wpuld be perfect if they changed zomboe spawn otherwise it's eh knowing where the zombies spawn from every time.
reply

This game was my child hood, the tank would scare me and i would get excited as a 6 yr old to run the whole game
reply

i remember playing l4d2 and just. -picks up rifle- -hey is friendly fire on? - -doesn't wait for a response-
