You can drive between the different racetracks in Mario Kart World, but is that enough to make it an open-world game IMPORTANT LINKS Polygon Newsletter: TikTok: tiktok. com/polygon Twitter: Instagram: Facebook: And for more gaming and entertainment coverage, visit

You hit the nail on the head
I don’t trust Nintendo to flesh out the open world aspect in a meaningful way. They often like to cut corners when they introduce their flashy gimmick. And with the way they seam to be leaning on the social aspects so much yeah I was thinking what would there be to actually do aside from just roam and observe the environment. Our only hold out right now is that one second of footage that had a switch in the background lol
At least we will get to find out before the game comes out

You're sorta obscuring the question here, no You're asking if MKWorld is an open world, but then all your points of evidence are about whether its a good open world, which is a different question.
I am very curious as to what exactly the free roam will entail, because I think it has to be more than just drive around and take pictures, especially because we've seen that there are item boxes during free roam. What would the purpose of most of the items be if there was nothing to do

Diddy Kong Racing had an open-world esque overworld you could expore and you would find the entrances to each race. There were unlocks you could find by exploring the overworld. I could see them using the overworld as a place to find some new kart parts, racers, etc. Though this open world does look notably larger than that overworld map. but as long as its fun to just drive around could be nice just to see the sights.

Imagine the desert area has a Mad Max situation happening. If you stray from the track your life is in danger.
Or on the City tracks, if you stray ur in a Grand Theft Auto/Fast & Furious situation
But a kid friendly version where the enemies are Gumbas or Koopas on Motorcycles
Oh oh! The game cost $80 bc all the enemies are played by real life underpaid staff from the Philippines!

The idea of seamlessly moving from one level to the next is part of the core concept of Bowser's Fury, so it's cool to see them still experimenting with it. I'm really hoping the next mainline Mario game gets a similar treatment. I don't want to get on a ship or go through a pipe to warp to the next biome; I just want to see the volcano and go to the volcano.

There are many open world racing games and they do add something. Burnout Paradise, The Crew and Forza shows this. It fits MK like a glove because linear racing is best for hardcore racers like GT. And of course it wont be empty so I dont get that crtique. Are you going to accuse GT6 of being empty because you havent been shown whats there

This has me thinking what kind of random encounters or secrets they would put in the open world. Secret races, new karts and characters, skins, etc.
But seeing how all roads connect, it probably is so you can collect coins in the open world so you can buy kart parts, paint jobs, and character skins instead of earning them

I really hope there's some kind of option in Free Roam mode like Forza's _The Eliminator_ or Burnout Paradise where you can have spontaneous races by interacting with other players or CPUs you come across. Maybe up to like 8 racers max, just so it's not limited to 1v1 but also not as hectic as the standard 24 racers

I get that Botw is good, but it's my least favorite Zelda game. I hate the weapon durability system, but my main complaint was that the world felt empty and same-y.
Like, oh good. Another Korok and another shrine that looks exactly the same as the last one. Again. For the literal hundredth time. Coooooool

I agree. I don't think can drive off the track to go to another track is actually an open world. An open world game requires virtually limitless explorability where you can find hidden items, quests, etc. that you can approach in a nonlinear manner. But MKW is still start at the start line, finish at the finish line.
reply

Unrelated but Ghost of Tsushima did open world so well. Not only would you reach the most visually stunning spots in the game, but you’d find unexpected and surprising side quests and activities not listed on the map simply for being curious. It made the game so much more immersive and replayable.

Honestly, Nintendo made the best open world game ever, that being Breath of the Wild, so I trust them with creating rich, engaging and beautiful world. Also, Mario Kart needed something new, if not they could just add more tracks to Mario Kart 8. Going full Forza Horizon seems like a good direction.
reply

As a game designer, open world helps engage players and gives a sense of freedom. Yes there are cases where that is not needed such as classic Mario formula but in game like Mario kart where the environment matter just as much as the racer it’s is a great idea to let people free roam
reply

An empty, bad open world is still an open world, just a poorly made one. It’s a descriptor, not an indicator of quality in fulfilling potential
MK World is definitely an open world, just because it fills the definition of that term. We’ll see if it’s a good open world

I think dunkey made a great point about RDR2’s open world: the reward you get for exploring is not some item or quest (although there are a lot of those) it’s just you get to see and experience more of the beautiful environments in the game.
reply

They definitely said that you can use free roam to find shortcuts. The main reward for exploration is just to take in the scenery. It’s not a gameplay reward, it’s just a fun little thing for people who want to do it.

My career is doing internet short content complaining about video games. My life is very fulfilled and I don't think about ending it all every single second of the day. I actually don't have the dumbest possible career.
reply

she doesnt realize how many gamers in the gamecube & wii days used to love to open up local multiplayer mode or free roam mode (if it was available, & explore the game's levels with nothing to do in them at all, for hours.
reply

Linear gameplay is okay but also, hot take, open worlds without loot or npcs in every corner are also okay. I'm chill with exploring an environment that doesn't reward me every five seconds.
reply

They already said what you could discover. There are special hidden coins, exclamation blocks, drivethrus to get costumes, mini time trial challenges. and other stuff I forgot
