This Baby Opossum Has the Cutest Hands Little But Fierce I have no words to express the gratitude I feel towards this lady and her friends. All that comes to mind is thank you, thank you for being super awesome, thank you for seeing the beauty in an animal that most ppl are disgusted by, thank you for being patient and thank you for saying yes, I will help. I have helped w some opossums in my area as well, after their care and recovery we release them on a wildlife preserve. No matter how hard you try, you do get a little knot in your throat and watery eyes bc you cant help but begin to love and care for them. A friend of mine has three of them that live alongside his rescued kitties, have a nice comfy feral house in the carport and it even has heat for the winter. Lol, they even use the litterbox when it comes to the point where they are brought inside the back porch when the weather is too extreme one way or the other. I promise you that thats an image you never forget is seeing an opossum using the litterbox. I am so happy to see that there are others out there that know that these beautiful animals are not something to be afraid or repulsed by, rather they are almost like cats and are precious and sweet and deserve as much respect as any other creature. Caring for another life other than your own is a rare virtue in this world and its always uplifting to find someone that possess it.

Let's be honest. Leona probably would have been fine if released. HOWEVER, I am absolutely not condemning them for keeping her. Not one little bit. They did all the hard work of successfully raising all those babies, they undoubtedly feel in love with them, they released all but one, and the one they kept clearly had a better life than she would have outside. I know the purests will say she deserves to be free but that's just not the way to look at it. Does your dog or car deserve to be free They and Leona are all comfortable and happy with human companions. As for wild vs pet for an opossum. think about it. No coyotes or dogs or owls or other predators will kill leona. She won't get hit by a car crossing the road. She will be warm all winter long. She will never be hungry or thirsty. She will sleep in a soft, warm bed where she is loved and looked after. If she could talk and knew what life in the wild was like vs her home, she'd beg not to be cast out into the wild free or not.

I love opossums. I have Lyme Disease and they eat ticks. I found a very, very small opossum hiding in my carport. He was leery of me so I was careful not to scare him away. He could eat and drink on his own so I made him a special hiding place and made sure he had fresh food and water. He loves apples. He's a lot bigger now. I still feed him every day and make sure he always has fresh, clean water. I think he just lives in my yard now. I see him often. I have a huge yard with lots of trees. I bought him an insulated house on Amazon with flap doors on both sides for this coming winter. I'll set it up in my screened porch where it's protected for moisture During the summer I found him sleeping on the patio chair cushions so I think he'll like his house when it's cold. If he ever wants to come inside, he is welcome. He could be a she. I'm not sure. He was just so incredibly small, like a mouse, and I didn't think he'd make it without help.

I love how animals will keep their baby behaviors when raised by humans. A perfect example is cats meowing. Meowing is meant to be a kittens instinct when calling for their mom. But since most cats basically always have a human mom/dad that takes care of them, meowing has become a super common form of communication for them. And now, I see that possums will still look for a substitute for a pouch on their owner.

At one point my dad caught a couple baby possums around our house. We keep chickens, possums sometimes cause some trouble. Most of the time we catch possums and bring them to a river a few miles away to release them, since water source and food nearby that they might be able to find. But I'm pretty sure my dad just let them go around our yard. They were cute and better yet hissing at us.

I would have cried too, in fact I have been in sobbing positions for animals before. You are so sweet and your family as well for doing this. If There was more people like you in the world, which I know there are, but we need that much more, the world will be a much better place. However, I couldn’t help but notice that the dog was in a cage, and it made me feel so sad.

Is God so wonderful Having created this amazing world. But now this new generation as lost everything and what is left they just try to destroy it. Take the time to look around and open your heart there is so so much beauty around us. Maybe after a little will you may change your out take of destroying things and life

If you’re lucky enough to have possums in your yard, you will notice almost no snails, no grasshoppers, no tomato worms! My yard possums would come to my back porch for strawberries, kiwis, apples and mealworms. They got so I could sit and they’d come up to the dish, but I could never pet them. Loved having them!

I feel it would be incredibly rewarding to know that an animal like this trusts you to the extent that they feel safer with you than anyone else. Fanatic animal rights weirdos can scream all they want, but the way I look at it, as long as an animal is safe and happy, does it really matter where they are

Raises 3 Opossums. Kept one and my children named Fred. I would take Fred for walks with harness and leash. When tied he would just climb up my leg and rest on my shoulders and neck. So sweet. People would stop to ask what he was all the time.

But when I went to grab the bone, it wasn't a bone, it was a new born baby opossum. I told my dad and said that I want to raise my baby opossum. He said okay. As she grew up, she only allowed me to hold her and not Susan. My adopted mom.

I noticed in alot of these videos many of the people in them are in the lgbt community or are a little bit quirky or not very good with people but have an incredible love for animals (fyi I'm proudly included in this list)

I'm English so I don't really have any preconceptions about possums. Leona looked like a lovely little animal so now, my preconceptions about possums are that some of them are very friendly.

When I was 14 years old, my dog brought in a baby opossum under my bed. At first I thought it was a bone, cause my other dogs were barking and growling at Ernest my that was under my bed.

We have possums come and eat the cat food that we put outside They LOVE it! And make a HUGE mess too! I like them! I've never had a problem with them ever.
reply

They are just too darn cute. I have a feed pile I clean and add to every night, so that animals that are hungry can get a bite. Amazon car hop trays.

Sweetness! What a beautiful story. My heart ached for the momma, though. I’m so glad someone was wise enough to check inside her pouch

Opossum. A raccoon/armadillo hybrid with vampire teeth.
Run across one of them while walking to the dumpster at 2am and find out.

I agree, for what its worth. Leona needs to stay with you. Maybe with people seeing her, they'll understand how great they truly are!

Opossums must be the ugliest thing in nature. Even infants are unwatchable.
