Family Carries Their Injured Lab Down A Mountain
video description
I trained my guy since he was a little pup to wear his bootsies when we hike because you never know. I'm not victim blaming but I did do that along with my daypack I wear on every single hike contains a water filter, warm later and two emergency blankets.
However, I often solo hike and even though my guy is only 70 lb it would be a great effort to make it back down one of the trails carrying him.
But I would do anything for him even if we had to camp out overnight and finish our hike the next morning.

I had to carry my cocker spaniel maybe 300 metres (with some hill) when she was attacked by a swarm of bees, back to the car so I could rush her to the vet. She'd gone all floppy and I thought she was dying. Problem was, I have a chronic illness and that walk was normally one done very slowly with lots of sitting while she raced around. I discovered I had almost no energy reserve. Carried her a little, laid on the ground, carried her a little and so on. It was awful. And she was fine after an injection. I was not!

This happened to my dog, Jake, who was about thirteen kilos. He tore a cruciate ligament six kilometres up a mountain. It was just him and me and my three other dogs. The journey back was a nightmare, my little backpack was only designed to carry a waterbottle and a drinking dish, not a fat Staffy cross. He was limp and saggy, there was really no way to hold him except like a baby in my arms. Im small myself, the trip back took two hours. We had a fabulous vet, the ligament was fixed and Jake recovered completely.

Our late Blue Tic suffered a leg injury when we were going on a climb up a mountain creek/waterfall and I had to carry her out, she was about 60 to 80 lbs. Fortunately it was only about 2 miles. At the Vets the XRays showed up a break as well as some shot in her side. She was a rescue that had been found wandering in the mountains. This was before the days of microchips, internet, and social media, and the owner/hunter couldn't be located. Even though it has been over 40 years ago, we still miss her. She was the best.

That dog doesn't have a care in the world. He's so loved and well tended that I bet he KNEW he didn't have to walk on that painful paw, and that you guys would just carry him. No wonder he refused to walk. dad would just have to deal with it! He's no fool! Good stuff. Awesome lab.

Oh I’m scared if that would happen. Being physically disabled would make this more than a challenge. Than 7km alone would be a little challenge. And if your dog is on the heavier side like here it makes it more difficult. Thankfully it worked out fine for you

an hour and a half is not bad at all tbh. 7km, downhill on unsteady terrain. yeah could've been worse. But yeah anytime I've taken my dog, I never think of an accident like that happening. Maybe a little portable dog stretcher, or a papoose

Kai knew his family would take good care of him. BTW, if Kai didn't have that extra weight on him, he would have been easier to carry down. Plus he'd feel better. Plus, his joints will be protected as he gets older.

Watching this while cuddling with my chocolate lab. I refer to her sometimes as Moose because she is huge. I cannot imagine having to carry her anywhere. Glad your baby is feeling better.

We had a dog that got a torn pad on a hike. We put a sock on his foot, securing it with duct tape. He didn't like the sock for the first few steps. Then he accepted it and walked out ok.

This happened to us. We took our shirts off and put tree branches through the shirt sleeves. It was a make shift gurney. My dog loved being carried down the mountain.

There are special dog boots for this reason. I recommend buying them if you go hiking with your dog. In the end I would not want to walk on stones barefoot as well.

It makes me so happy to see a dog, cat, bird or any animal living the happy and fulfilling life they were meant to live. This is what dedicated pet parents do.

7 km is around 4 miles That is a long way to carry a big dog but I m glad they made it down without falling while carrying him. I hope he heals completely.

I'm sure you feed him out of love, but dog is clearly overweight. Feed him less, and he will be healthier, and easier, to carry next time; )

On such rough and tough terrain, do let your pet dogs wear some footwear (protective shoes or boots. They help to protect their paws.
