Another activity elephants are used in is as rides for tourists. Years ago, I thought an elephant ride was something I'd like to do. Not anymore. Additionally, sometimes elephants used for human economic activities are kept isolated from other elephants. This is a form of cruelty for a social animal like an elephant. Freeing elephants used for human economic activities can be more complicated than it might first appear. Taking away the elephant might end up creating serious hardship and deprivation for humans using the elephants for the purpose of logging or rides or whatever. Not that that excuses using elephants.
A solution must exist where improved elephant welfare is given attention without creating a situation where humans end up being unable to feed themselves.
At least Mare Noi is now free.

It makes me so sad how some elephants have to live their lives. Ripped away from their extended families forever and forced to live confined and to work for decades. I'm glad she finally was set free. I'm not surprised her body rejected those pregnancies. It's like it knew it wasn't going to be a life worth living.

Aw we don't deserve elephants, dogs or horses honestly. They helped build our society. They've helped us fight wars. They are just amazing animals and humans don't always treat them well or appreciate them.

So happy she was rescued. Just sad that it took so long for her to get rid of the chains. Poor girl, 41 years old. She needs to be treated like a queen from now on.
