We found a have a heart trap with a skunk in it in the woods on the border of some houses It was horrible hot week and I had a feeling that it was abandoned so I checked it out and there he was, we brought a tarp and put down some dried fruit, nuts and a frisbee with water. Got it open talking to him telling him we are trying to help. He watched me put the water & food I sprayed him with some water because of the heat. The skunk just walked out and started walking. I smashed the trap of monsters who trap and never check in brutal heat

Skunks are great! I had an old tree stump where hornets made a nest in. I asked people how to get rid of themone said pour gasoline down the hole light it on fire. No way was I going to do that and risk burning the neighbor’s or my property. Literally the next day I saw what looked like dirt and dead tree debris around where the stump had been. I inspected the area for any signs of hornets or nestNOTHING! Our neighborhood skunk came grubbing during the night and feasted on the hornets nest. Love that skunk!

Ahh, he was weak in the legs and stumbling. He needed rest, water and food badly to build his strength up. Hope he had easy access to both after. Hard to believe whoever she called didn’t tell her to leave lots of water and a little food close by the bushes where he’d normally run to for cover.
And yes, always do a regular property search folks and cover in holes safely, for wild life, pets, children and anyone. A big adult could even trip and break a bone on that.

Hooray!
My mom has repeatedly told the story of she and her crowd cruising up and down the main streets in Houghton/Hancock, MI, while holding a skunk out the window by its tail.
For future reference, the Backwoods Wisdom is you are fine so long as a skunk has no weight on, or purchase with, the hind legs.
That said, don't get nipped or bit cuz rabies is a whole other bother

Skunks are smart pole cats that don't like to waste their spray. I let a skunk out of a humane box trap with normal clothes on and it did not spray at all. I did get whacked by the skunk's tail in my face and looked at the skunk eye to eye as I bent down to open the trap. Skunks seem to know you are trying to help them and I have petted domesticated skunks without a problem.

My daughters neighbor few yrs back saw a Skunk with a peant butter jar stuck on his head. He took a fishing pool, stood up in his trailered bass noat. And kept trying to hook the jar. Somehow. Eventually pulled it off. And the skunk thankfully never sprayed. Thus, Keep your trash secure to PREVENT wildlife coming to harm like this.

For future reference. She went about it backwards. You get a tarp, or sufficiently robust (thick) clear plastic. Think shower curtain, but larger. You place that over the skunk then pull the skunk out. Then calmly walk away to a corner of your tarp and calmly pull it away. Then you very carefully fold the tarp and discard.

My dogs have been sprayed several times. Absolute best method I've used.
1. 5 gallon bucket
2. Lots of Dawn dish soap
3. Box of baking soda
4. Bottle of hydrogen peroxide
Mix ingredients together in bucket with warm water. Apply and let sit for 10-15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Repeat 3 more times or until satisfied.

The arrogance of humans annoys me so damn much. We act like we own this planet and everything on it, and we leave traps like this everywhere without a single thought for how it will impact the ecosystem we are just one small part of.
Thank you for saving that critter, I wish the homeowner had ANY sense of even BASIC responsibility.

The baby skunk I rescued wouldn't spray me ever but would spray the dogs. He was so stinking cute. Unfortunately he couldn't be released. He had been hit by a car and need medicine for seizures for the rest of his life. But he's living his best skunk life with a rescue. we love you little Jessie

When I was 7 my 12 yr old brother tackled me in front of a skunk den on purpose and we both got sprayed. I remember when we got home my mom got these huge cans of tomato sauce from Costco and we had to take a bath to get the smell off. Good times in the pre internet age

That pipe needs to be sealed. Also you can use a heavy towel placed over the sent glads so hopefully it would catch most of the spray. I think she didn’t get sprayed because of the super kind thing she did and the poor skunk was too worn out to spray anyone.

No one knows how long this poor animal remained in this accursed hole, what suffering he endured, and how he felt. I imagined myself stuck in a hole in the same way. How would I feel This is very difficult. This damned hole must be covered

Well done, awesome rescue. Poor skunk would probably have benefited from being offered some water after that ordeal, but I absolutely understand why such hospitality wasn't offered. Glad he got to scurry away to recuperate.

Just let those people know you've been vacationing in Humboldt County in California, everyone leaves smelling like skunk. I have to wonder how many other animals have lost their lives in that silly pipe. WTHeck

That pipe needs to be covered by a heavy object to make sure that can't happen to another creature. perhaps a pot of some type Good job on the rescue, I'm pretty sure he knew you were there to help, hence no spray.

Thank you for saving the skunk! They get a bad rap. Might tell the owner of that property where the exposed pipe is to cover it somehow so something else doesn't drop down or get stuck in it. Thanks again!
