The timeline always bugged me: so they are supposed to graduate at 17, marry right after, have a child at 20 and die at 21?
But when did they have time to fight Voldemort hard enough that he would have the desire to kill them specifically?
Making them 10 years older would have been more natural, they wouldnt even have to date before graduating:
Graduating at 17, while Voldemort is rising, they could have joined the order of the phenix separately right after and be reunited by chance.
James enrollment might have convinced Lily that he was actually a great guy, and they could have fought Voldemort during several years in their 20s before having a kid by the time they were 30 and be killed at 31.
Would have made way more sense to me.

Controversial statement: I can enjoy both of James and Snapes characters whilst not believing one is better than the other. I also believe that theyre both nuanced characters, and the fact that Lily chose one over the other is not enough ground to bash her, and either of the two.

The first wizarding war was in the 20s and lily and James went to hogwarts in the 70s
So there would be no rush to get married or have harry, maybe they were so in love they just thought it was the next step for their relationship.
