Looking for scares? Today we re counting down our picks for the most head-turning, blood-curdling, and scream-inducing horror films of 2023. Warning - frights and spoilers ahead! Our countdown includes movies Saw X, Huesera: The Bone Woman, Skinamarink and more! What horror movie had you trembling with delight this year?
Date: 2023-11-27

Comments and reviews: 20

Well this list sucks.
10) Knock at the Cabin - it was tense, good movie. Batista was awesome. It was one of the better movies this year and only 10th place? My rating 7/10
9) No one will save you - it is okay movie, but was overhyped. Acting was good but it was chaotic. Underwhelming really. 5, 5/10
8) Skinamarink - reallly? Just really? You are putting worst movie of the year above Knock and No One? It is sooo boring. If you are scared watching this you are pussy. 1/10
7) Scream 6 - the worst installment in the franchise but still good movie. Predictable and flashy but better than most on this list. 6, 5/10
6) Infinity Pool - Brandon has great ideas but sometimes execution doesn't work. It is good movie but always something lacks. 6/10
5) Huesera - I was really surprised how good this movie was. Good choice. 6, 5/10
4) Megan - it was fun entertaining movie. It has its flaws but still good. 6, 5/10
3) Saw X - really great movie. I was sceptical when it was character driven instead of flashy kills and great traps but it worked. 7, 5/10
2) Evil Dead Rise - another good choice. I was worried because Evil Dead Remake from 2013 was blasphemy and this looks similar but it worked. 7/10
Honorable mentions:
The Boogeyman - it was really boring. Kings recommendation isn't justified. Overhyped mess. 4/10
The Outwaters - alongside Skinamarink worst movie of this year and maybe both are worst horror movies of the decade. Boring mess. 2/10
The Blackening - I was hyped to watch this but unfortunately it isn't good nor funny. One joke works and that's it. Disappointing. 4/10
Thanksgiving - Didin't watch yet.
1) Talk to Me - I was worried that hype will be too much and. I was right. I love RackaRacka but people overhyped it. It is great idea and good movie but not as good as they claimed. 6, 75/10
2022 was better for horror. I hope 2024 will be better than this.

0: 18: Knock at the Cabin is director M. Night Shyamalan's impactful and terrifying horror film of 2023.
4: 11: A discussion of the horror film 'Infinity Pool' and the return of Hayden Panettiere in the 'Scream' series.
8: 03: Tobin Bell delivers a superb performance in Controlled Chaos, while Evil Dead Rise is a gruesome and thrilling bloodbath for horror connoisseurs.

All of them were god awful. The only movies I liked in 2023 were Extraction 2 and Mission Impossible 7. Everything else was okay, I hated it, or was just a one-time watch. Oppenheimer was a one-time watch. I liked Oppenheimer, but it's not going in my favorite list or some top 10 list since it had no re-watch factor to it. It's a movie I only need to see one time.

As an evil dead fan I don t understand why everyone likes the new one. I mean I guess my expectations were just a lot higher because the original remake is legit one of my favorite horror movies ever. But this one just didn t do it for me at all. It just felt like everything they tried to do different was just not it. And it was the same thing happening anyways.

I went to see Saw X on release day along with PAW Patrol 2 because I thought it was funny how two more polar opposite movies came out at the same time and I d never seen anything from either franchise before but I still had a good time with both (I saw the respective first movies so I didn t go in completely blind)

I only like KNOCK AT THE CABIN on this list. But seriously, where s COCAINE BEAR, RENFIELD, HAUNTED MANSION, THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER, and FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY S?
These were the movies that made 2023 a good year for horror and I m not a big horror movie person!

I'm not a fan Talk to me movie, it does gave me good scary scenes with full of despicable characters but many plot-holes that's it's weak spot. I heard the news, the sequel on the work, i hope it should've been the prequel so it's would be more interesting

When Evil Lurks was better than everything on this list. Thanksgiving, which only got an honorable, was also stronger than most of the list. Talk to Me, Megan and Knock at the Cabin were all disappointments and Skinamarink is unwatchable.
reply

Great List, WatchMojo, but personally The Blackening should have been in the Top 5, due to being not only a successful horror comedy, but a true horror satire attacking the ethnic tropes circling the horror genre for over a century.
reply

Aright, im kind of sure Megan did come out in '23, but why did you put '22? And two movies from '22 in this list for movie of '23? Really? If there was a shortage, then why not juat make a numberless list like youve done before?
reply

No One Will Save You was my favorite horror movie this year. I loved it so much! The decision to make that whole film without the use of dialogue was genius, and it made all the scares more suspenseful and terrifying!
reply

Great list Watchmojo. Legends never let down with their list but I hated Skinamrink.
My favourite horror films.
Saw X
, Knock At The Cabin,
Evil Dead Rise,
When Evil lurkes

FNAF? 3rd biggest opening weekend of any horror movie ever deserves a spot up here don't you think? As one who has seen it 5 times so far I can tell you it is not overhyped. I'd gladly watch it another 5 times.
reply

While superhero movies and Disney's animated films have all bombed big time, Horror movies this year and maybe last year, have risen back to popularity.
It's great to be a horror movie fan.

reply

After seeing Evil Dead Rise three times, I really hope they bring Ash back in the next movie
Edit: Even if Bruce Campbell is done with being Ash Williams, I will still watch the Evil Dead movies

reply

Never Hike Alone 2 is the best horror movie of 2023. Not a studio film but a fan made Friday The 13th film. Better than almost every official movie in the franchise, a slasher movie with a brain.
reply

I absolutely can't agree with Knock at the Cabin being on this list. absolutely horrible film, I thought about walking out of it more times than I care to share and I wish I would've. Trash.
reply

You ve got to be kidding me! The scariest film of the year was EASILY When Evil Lurks, and it s not even on your list! Plus, Cobweb was way scarier than most of the bottom five on this list!
