My hair got badly badly matted 3 years ago. because of bad mental health, it was my first year living away from home and I had started college, I was exhausted most days and hated the way I looked so I kept it up in a bun and it got worst and worst and worst and eventually I had to get it sorted for a show I was doing. I had long mermaid hair and use to have time to look after it but that particular year I just couldn't.
I can really relate to the first woman. a huge lumpy matt started forming and some days I would try and solve it and then some days I was just too tired to even deal with it so I would ignore it and it got worse.
I went to a hair dresser that lived near me in tears one evening and told her what had happened and how I have a show coming up and I'm expected it to be sorted by then by the director. She spent hooooursss of her life with her daughter attacking the matts in my hair and they were tight against my head like up ON my head not even at the bottom. I was sooooo sure I was gonna have to shave it all off after years of having long wavy mermaid hair. I was devastated. They got a lot undone and eventually I took a deep breath and said just cut it now. They chopped it just above my shoulders (I had no idea where the length came from) And my hair had natural wavy curls that started to bounce back and create a cute bob. I was so relieved and emotional and mad at myself all at the same time. Next day at rehearsals I had a lot of compliments from everybody and my hair style which was slick and straight really suited my character and the production photos turned out amazing!
3 years later. I now have my mermaid hair back! Super happy. although I would love to have short shoulder length hair again because I loved trying to do different hair styles without the possibility of matts

Towards the end of 2021 (around the Christmas period) I became very ill and my kidneys stopped working. I've never been that sick in my life. I'd been mostly unconscious for several days before I got to the hospital. After I got there, nurses had to assist me with doing everything, including showering. I was so sick I couldn't even stand up on my own. My hair was already quite tangled when I got there, and of course I hadn't brought a brush with me in the ambulance. It was in great condition in all other ways though, I took very good care of it. One of the nurses (who was very rude and quite mean, actually) insisted on washing my hair with antibacterial hand wash and using barrier cream as conditioner. All of the other nursing staff were lovely, and so caring. The next day, my hair was beyond saving. I went from having hip length black hair (like in my profile picture) to having hair shorter than Brad's is in this video, because the whole lot had to be cut off in one giant lump. I felt blessed that much could be saved, actually, because I was sure that they'd have to shave my head. It's grown back to below my shoulders now, so it's gradually getting back to the lengths I'm more used to. And yes, I made a formal complaint against that rude nurse. Mostly though, I'm grateful that I lived through that time. The way I saw it, if I had to choose between my life and my hair, the hair can go, because hair grows back. Your life doesn't.

I had severe emergency back surgery and couldn t wash/do my hair (3c/4a natural) for months. From laying down most of the day after my surgery, my hair got so matted. My little curly haired pineapple I was wearing before going in for surgery was a ball of tangled hair. It was only two months of matting (I say only because Hadasa s clients tend to have years worth) and it took me almost 12 hours to detangle my hair myself. (I had to take a lot of breaks because my back was still not healed) I still ended up giving myself a big chop afterwards because I was still in recovery and I knew my hair would end up matted again because I wouldn t be able to keep up my long hair care routine, even if I was able to put my hair in protective styles.
My point is you just never know how people get to this point and that s Hadasa s key point of her videos. I was disgusted with myself for letting my hair get to that level, but watching her videos I realized I needed to give myself some grace and not be so hard on myself.

This happened to me. People don't realize this happens way too fast for someone to comprehend. I didn't brush my hair for two weeks I was washing them though. It was during corona. I was trying hard to make money and doesn't have time for self-care. I saw a small ball of hair on the back of my head and detangled one side to do the other side tomorrow. The side I detangled I make a ponytail of it but the next day because of humidity and frizz they become more clumped than the side I didn't detangle. I have a jaw pain problem and can't handle pulling my hair. My sister was my hero. I don't want to cut it. I always feel I need just 10 to 15 hours to detangle them, but I never found the time. My sister detangled them for me in Feb 2021. My hair got tangled in August 2020. I was seriously very embarrassed of it, but don't want to cut it. When she detangles and comb through them, I feel so relieved because it was so itchy even though I was washing regularly

I went to the best hair stylist in my city and he was the roughest with my hair it hurt so so so much I hated every minutes and the gloss he put in didn t last 20 minutes. Another salon only used gloss so the color didn t last 1 hour. And she gave me purple shampoo? I wish hairdressers learnt how to color dark dark brown hair. Under that black hair is red girl red. You need to use blue shampoo unless you re going blonde. But I finally found a great salon but guess what the hairdresser was RUDE so rude to me. He expected me to know exactly the shade I wanted like boo how can I know the name of it chill out and no I don t want it to look exactly like the picture, use your creativity. Now I m going to do my hair at home. I love John Frieda products and at home glaze and gloss and masks options. Ooh girl I tried and I m spent. Back to going to the salon just for a trim.

a few years ago I was in the darkest place of my life. Was already struggling hard with depression and then my best friend died. I completely stopped taking care of myself. I had pretty long hair and I just stopped brushing or washing it for weeks. It was too much to deal with. I developed a pretty significant matt which made my depression worse. I eventually got the motivation to take care of it and damn. It took three showers, each about and hour and a half. It was so painful and I pulled out so much of my own hair out of frustration in the process. I ended up getting my hair cut significantly shorter afterwards to make care easier. I wish I'd gone in and had someone do it professionally. I loved watching these videos, this woman is doing an amazing service.

When I see things like this, I actually feel blessed to have the hair that I do. I have thin, baby fine, curly hair. I don t brush my hair. While I am in the shower and have conditioner in my hair, I run my fingers through it before and during the rinse out. When I get out, I use a little curl/frizz control product, and again run my fingers through. I own a brush, but please don t ask me where it is. My hair does not knot. Sleeping, riding a jet ski, working out at the gym always knot free.
Bless this woman s heart. The work she is doing is not only helping their outside, but also the inside. Giving these women their self-esteem back and healing souls. We need more like her.

I groom dogs, not people, but it is a very similar process when it comes to matted dogs. They shed dead hair, and especially with wavy or curly coated dogs, the hair doesn t fall on its own, it needs to be combed or brushed out. But if it s not, as they roll around or rub their coat and scratch, the hair just intertwines and causes matting. When we do dematting on dogs, we use a metal tooth comb, and just use the first 3-4 teeth to pick through the mats a little at a time, starting at the bottom and working up to the root. If the mats are really thick, sometimes we will use scissors to slice through them and break them into smaller portions to make it easier to pick through.

My best friend was in a horrible car accident about 7 years ago. She was months in the hospital in a neck brace, a broken pelvic and many other injuries. She called me one day crying that they wanted to cut her hair off. She is indigenous and her hair was very sacred to her. I grabbed a bottle of conditioning spray and stood behind her hospital bed every day for a week combing each piece strand by strand. It was a massive ball of hair. By the grace of God she didn't lose her precious hair and we bonded even more that week. I remember nurses shaking their head at me. They shouldn't have let her get into that situation in the first place but I digress.

I was in hospital for 20 months. The first 6 of them I was hardly ever really conscious. The nurses and doctors mainly fought to save my life, but completely neglected my long hair. So I got a huge tangled nest of hair on the back of my head. My mother contacted a salon that specialised in black customers hair (we live in Switzerland and these types of salons are still very rare, because she thought of dreadlocks and that they were basically what I had, just less cool and differently shaped. They gave my mum tips and products and she de-tangled my hair with a crocheting hook for four days. I did lose a bit of hair, but nothing major.

For years my OCD and depression made it next to impossible to leave the house or even to get out of bed most days. My hair got like this many times. I would just wash it and sleep with it like this. My hair was the least of my worries. Every few months I would sit down on the couch put on brad mondo or some chick flicks and work on it for hours and hours. I would cry my eyes out and have to rest my arms every 15 minutes or so. It would eventually be untangled and i would just let it get bad again. I just didn't have the energy to care 99% of the time. I figured if I just made it through the day it was enough.

As someone in active addiction that keeps her hair up at all times, every two weeks or so I wash my hair and un Matt it, it takes an hour each time to un tangle it. My opinion and recommendation to those who do the same thing that I do weather an addict or in depression, It s easier and quicker to untangle/un Matt dry hair. Your hair is weaker when wet, so I don t recommend doing it soaking wet or clumped on with conditioner. I only use a leave in conditioner spray before untangling it, def don t do it soaking wet its much harder IMO I also have three diff brushes I use in the process lol

I get my hair tangled very easily because I wear hair ties and hair pins, and also my hair is naturally fine and dry, so I have some tips. (But best not to get it tangled in the first place obv)
If you wanna detangle matted hair with the least damage: Use your hands and split the hair strands and find where the tangle is exactly, hold that tangled part with both hands and then pull one hand up towards the base of the hair (the scalp) then sleek it down out of the hair once it gets loose. Also always hold the hair with some slack so it doesn't pull on the scalp and hurt.

My daughter has this problem and it can develop within just a couple days if she doesn't brush it. She tends to sweat a lot around her neck area and the hair gets matted and then tangled and she doesn't always realize how bad it's getting until she feels a huge mat and her head gets itchy. I deal with her hair the same way this lady does, a lot of conditioner and small sections at a time, starting from the bottom and working your way up. Lately, I've been having her put a loose top bun on top of her head before bed and that seems to help a lot!
