Pot Wash! Use wood for bread, salad and maybe fruit by all means if in your own home. Use plastic for meat cooked or raw. Simple. And to avoid splashing dirty water around when it has been has used for raw meat, do the first 'wash' with a low pressure tap low down in the sink. Don't fill the sink, put your detergent on your sponge cloth or scrubber. and never use the same one for the first 'clean' as you do to your 'finish it off rinse'. There are so many kinds of sponge scrubber etc you can always find two that work work but are really different so you won't confuse them. I also recommend Baby equipment sterilizing solution to clean your cloths etc. It has has a lot less other crap than normal Chlorine Beach but still contains the chemical you need and works very well. Just read the instructions. ( UK Kitchen Porter speaking here, but the advice is good - Oh and it's red for raw meat. Brown for cooked meat. Green for general veg. It blue for fish, though some countries use white but in The UK white at least used to be the plastic version of wood ( Though we can use it we just have two different shapes of them so we never confuse who is salad and who is bread as need different washing styles and no wood wood goes in the sink. It is between getting a pair of fresh run sinks that they should be done under a running tap once I've mucked the damn thing out. Always wash cleanest to dirtiest then redo! ) for bread and washed 'about to serve' salad. Two different shaped wood boards can also be used for these. Ps - Yellow for cheese or other dairy. ) Another PS - If anyone in a kitchen chucks anything that has raw meat on it in MY SINKS - I will Go Ballistic. And yes I've had several chefs offer to teach me to become a chef - Back then but all I wanted to do was wash dishes I just have to learn how the whole kitchen operates in order to do it in the right way so sometimes I 'Scrubbed in to Surgery' and had to cook but I hate it. Anyway again and also. See splinters don't scare me, a blue plaster is all that's needed. No it is the sharper than a surgeons scalpel main prized chefs kn'fs and burning hot ceramic and metal things and far too many really busy people in a very small and hot space all wielding these hot sharp objects that bother me - That's what I care about. While there might be little evidence that microplastics are bad for us as humans, you yourself pointed out that there is evidence they are bad for marine animals. And that is where most of those microplastics end up eventually. So that by itself can be a reason not to use them.
As for the point that there is no evidence that microplastics are bad for you, as you pointed out that is mostly by lack of available research. Science needs time to make such claims. Maybe it is inert and does nothing, but the same is true for pfas (anti stick coatings, and evidence is mounting that that is bad for you if you eat it.
Another point is that our body can break down wood, not very well, but good enough to get rid of partials of wood, so anything that does not just move trough your digestive system is eventually broken down. It can not break down plastic, so anything that does not just move through your digestive system stays there until you die.
Those taken together is enough reason for me to want to avoid plastic cutting boards to the extend that i reasonably can.
And to solve the color coding issue, put a color coded piece of rubber on the side of the cutting board like the one you show in the video. Keeps it in place and you still have the color coding while reducing the microplastics generated while cutting.

People are generally really dumb. Almost everyone is really smart about something or even a couple things. but generally even the smartest people are still really dumb. Also, people are control freaks, but have no way to actually control most of the factors in their lives. Like how much plastic or lead they are exposed to.
I don't love how much plastic is in my life, and actively do what I can to reduce how much plastic I use. But it is vacuous and banal to be a jerk to others about small things like this. I'm a vegan, but I don't have a license to be a dick to every other person in the world for what they eat. My best move is to just make really tasty vegan food and offer it to people to show them I'm not just stuck eating lettuce and rice everyday.

I get that the restaurant industry uses plastic cutting boards as a standard. But one could argue that’s a good reason to not eat out all the time. Eat mostly food you make yourself and know what went into it and how it was prepareddown to the kind of pan and cutting boards used, the way the food was stored and handled, the exact ingredients and cooking fats used, etc.
All that said, I do get how it isn’t entirely fair to call out a specific video/chef on this particular point. I probably wouldn’t have done that. But it is the reaction I have whenever I see a video of a chef using Teflon. So I can’t judge. Even though, I myself, do on rare occasions use a plastic cutting board. When it makes sense or is called for.

Hei Adam, im from europe Denmark and checked out the vitamins you advertise to, first at all you perfectly understand and know that you dont need vitamin suplements as a normal healthy human, then if you dont feel well just go to the doctor and let him tell you if you need to take anything. Second, you can do advertisements to so many perfectly relevant stuff for your subject, food etc bacteria whatever, kitchen utensils etc. Third the last and the reason i write this comment, look brother im from denmark we arent exactly poor around here, we pretty well off, but man common 60 dollars for a month worth of whatever mambo gumbo jumbo woodo magic pills 60 dollars a month! 410 dkk a month for one person Tell the people from gruns to take it easy man.

Just a quick reflection on semantics from a non-english native biologist, sprouted from minute 5: 57. I am unsure whether we can call a genetic condition/mutation that 30% of the population has an abnormality. Like, is 30% a rarity It's 1 out of 3 people essentially. Abnormality to me has two problems. Firstly, it might not classify in this case as the frequency is quite high. There are not only normal and abnormal things, it can be mor of a spectrum. Secondly, the word comes with an array of negative connotations in many contexts that perhaps do not apply. Dunno, made me think about how I would phrase it if I was writing the findings of that study and I would never use abnormality. Perhaps condition instead.

It likely has little to do with not being able to get laid, or being upset about being out of shape. In fact, I would guess that the vast majority of people who even know about microplastics are also taking initiative with their diets and physical fitness.

I don't like the manosphear either, but condensing a widescale problem that many people are concerned about as something only a crazed vocal minority would be interested in feels disingenuous.
Although the truth about microplastics as a whole have yet to be determined, but there are defined substances that people need to look out for, and be made aware of when buying plastic products, which again like bpa, can be found in waterbottles.

Also 1000% agree on the just use whatever you prefer argument, in my opinion the best cutting board for you is the one you're most likely to clean thoroughly and it doesn't matter if it's a plastic one you throw in the dishwasher or a wooden one you clean by hand because (like me) you like how good the wood looks when it's wet.

Some multi vitamins are even dangerous due to the high dosage. All credibility from this video went out of the window.
But as long as you bet paid to promote that stuff apparently it doesn’t matter. Not even to mention the ridiculous individual packaging, a total waste of packaging and resources.

I appreciate this video. I do have a plastic cutting board, but I'm a very life-hack-speed-running-tasks person and I actually tend to just hover my vegetables over whatever I'm cooking and saw them with a serrated blade directly into the pan or my salad. Not recommended for large quantities, I assume, or safety, but I've literally never cut myself even once. I apply the walk don't run model for that part of it lol. I hate dirtying a cutting board is my point haha.

Even if it's bad for you, it's pretty much unavoidable and it doesn't seem to have stopped people from living long, healthy lives. Ultimately the deciding factor should just be to do what makes you happy. If buying things marketed as good for the planet makes you feel better about yourself, do it. Just maybe don't berate people who don't care about the marginal and borderline nonexistent improvement you think your choices would have made if imposed on their lives.

One advantage of (solid) wood cutting boards, which is why I prefer them, is that when the surface gets jagged and rough after lots of use you can sand it down, sterilise it and prep it with some cutting board oil and it's as good as new, whereas the plastic ones just keep getting rougher and especially when it's white plastic you can see that the deeper grooves get dirtier and you can't get them clean again no matter how much you try.

I mostly cut on a tempered glass desk topper or a big flat ceramic plate I inherited from my Grandpa, I do not know the compositions of them or why they used such material as a cutting surface, but I also grew quite fond of them, they tend to dull the knifes I use quicker, which is probably the biggest downside.
The implication of glass splinters never crossed my mind, since they are close to scratchless for close to a century now.

generally agree with the sentiment and most of the arguments here, but I find problematic that argument of you particular choice won't make a difference because while yes, we are over sold on the power of choice, there's the principle of voting with your money and standing up to your concerns and customs. People just need to be aware that that's the idea and they are not fixing the world for everyone, just choosing for themselves.

My dad worked at a grocery store and the butcher had to sand down and refinish his cutting board every day.
For home use, it seems weird to me to use a scouring pad on it for cleaning in the first place. After all, you're supposed to oil it regularly, to give it a water-resistant coating. And then you're going to scrub off that coating, to let the highest possible amount of bacteria into the now roughened up surface

As a former prep cook, I have to assume that it's pretty hard to get data on the benefit of color coded cutting boards, as they're easily and regularly disregarded. You might leave them in the dish pit for longer than you can wait, managers replace the wrong color somehow (or possibly don't replace them at all, or maybe you just don't get paid enough to care. One place I worked didn't even have color coded boards.
