Greeks have been grilling meat for centuries, and the tradition is being kept alive withThe Souvlaki Lady, who has been on the corner of Ditmars and 33rd St in Astoria, Queens for 30 years. On this episode of Dining on a Dime, Lucas Peterson tries her namesake souvlaki, with some soutzoukakia and some delicious (and secret) sauces

Astoria 20 years ago was one of the least desirable neighborhoods in Queens. No one but the Greeks wanted to live there. It was a rundown dump like Hells Kitchen in 1960s and 70s was a dump. Then came the young professional transplants from suburban America and the gays who started to move into Astoria because revitalized Brooklyn neighborhoods like Buschwick and Williamsburg became too expensive for these transplants. Astoria today is so gentrified that the Greeks can't afford the rents and properties as it's been turned into Queen's largest gayborhood.

The last one sounds like a mixed grill, a pretty common dish in Greece (well, at least when I was there years ago. You'd get beef, chicken, pork, some sausage, lamb - all in one dish. Served souvlaki-style with fried potatoes, tzatziki, and some veggies. Also, fresh lemon to squeeze over the meat. Super delicious and you'll definitely be full after a meal like that.

Astoria my neighborhood unfortunately gentrification has worsen our neighborhood a lot. Two great restaurants in Astoria are definitely Taverna Kyclades and Zenon Taverna. Another great sport is BZ Grill! If you ever visit Astoria you won't regret visiting any of these three places for sure!

Astoria will just keep getting more expensive due to its diversity, lots of condo development, safety, 10 minute commute to midtown and most importantly good food. Some of the best ethnic food in NYC can be found in Astoria - Opa Opa! (RIP, Arepas cafe, Homemade Taqueria, Bartolino's etc.

Not as good as people have reported, the chicken on stick was dry and over salted. Mostly white meat. Low cost but nothing to write home about. Eater. ny needs to up their game this is another one of theirs raving reviews that are sub par. Notable the fried chicken in NY review.

Wow, that Souvlaki lady looks really good. Like, if she had kids, plural before this cart, the youngest she could be was in her 20s when she started. I guess that Greek food's just that great for one's health, eh?

Ive never had Souvlaki Lady. Ditmars is a little bit of a trek from where I live, but looks great. You should also try Frankies Souvlaki parked on Steinway and 31st Ave next time you are in Astoria.

The thing I've never gotten is that the majority of Greece and most Greeks identify as Orthodox Christian, but Orthodox Christians are the most strict when it comes to not consuming Pork.
