Migrant farm workers have long been a part of the agricultural industry in the United States, and they predominantly come from Latin American countries for seasonal work, such as fruit-picking. In this segment, filmmaker Ava Lowrey profiles an artist that wants honor them in her own way. Lina Puerte is a Mixed-Media artist, and her recent installation at Powerhouse in Oxford, Mississippi is called From Field to Table: Seven Tapestries Honoring Latino Farm Laborers from the American South. She chose crops found in the South, especially those that require hard manual labor. Using photographs as inspiration, she already had an idea of the scenes and images she wanted to depict in her artwork. Puertes method for this series was to use stencils, different materials and paper pulp to reach a piece with a diversity of textures, layers and depth

So many low information Americans have zero understanding of how indispensable migrant labor is to our every day lives. They love to yell, scream, tweet, complain about all the typical nonsense while obliviously shopping for groceries looking for sales on fruit and vegetables. Excellent video, Eater. Talented artist indeed.

This is one video where I wish there was an interview with the workers who work these fields. (Will it be happening next? Will the farmers who inspired the photos see these pieces) The art is gorgeous, and this is one where I especially want to hear this story come full circle.
