Learn how to make a Mumbo Sauce recipe Drew Hairston: As a DC native son, I was taken aback by your question of what we cook/eat in our town. The Mid-Atlantics best seafood is here, with a blend of the South's comforting traditional staples and the Norths penchant for fresh local ingredients with seasonal flair. Not to mention DC being the latest stop on the Michelin Guide's route. If you want something that speaks to our culture, eat at Ben's Chili Bowl, Oooohs and Aaahs, or Old Ebbit. Or if you want to know why our local chefs are world renowned try the Dabney, Bad Saint or The Inn at Little Washington.

Just to put it out there, you should always use local honey because it helps both the bee farms and the bees. And just in case anyone doesn't know, bees are immensely vital to the ecosystem and most every plant ever. That includes all the fruits and vegetables we farm and eat. We'd be in VERY big trouble without bees to pollinate everything. Pollination is done by other bugs and animals, but bees are the vast majority of pollination. Starting to rant now, but it's all basic biology and bees are very important to our food supply.

When I grew up in DC, there was a place called Wings N Things directly across from Spinghan ( spelling) HS in Benning Road, near RFK. This was in 60's &70's. My Mom use to get those Mumbo Jumbo sauce wings. Best wings I have ever tasted. The wings were heavily floured and the skin would fall off. Anyone know if it is still there?

Sounds like a baby wolfepit narrating. Yall will never have the original mumbo which is locked in my taste buds. It was made for black people in a soulful way. So ingredients to eliminate. Ginger, honey and soy sauce. That musta been Georgetown mumbo sauce for the people uptown. lol

Made it. Its not a bad sauce, just not mumbo sauce, the way I know it. A bit to thick, not spicy enough, sweetness is off. I can't put my finger on it, its just off. Btw, if you make it. To D. C, find Smokey's on 14th St. get the sauce on the wings and potatoes. Thank me later.

This is the sauce they had at Chicken Planet in Chicago, located next to John Marshall Law School on State and Dearborn for those familiar. The place closed and I was devastated. This sauce got me through school. Never knew what the hell it was. Thanks Chef John.

Add a pinch of white sugar. Adds a cup of white sugar. Mumbo Jumbo? Take the ginger and tomato sauce that didn't go through the strainer and mix into some sour cream for an interesting dip. I can see this used to top off a bed of rice and cooked shrimp and veg.

The fried chicken from the old Hot Shoppes is legendary, the navy bean soup at the capitol is iconic but mumbo sauce is just filth from the hood. I have enjoyed about everything you have cooked until this nastiness. Hate to do it but thumbs down on this one.

DC guy here, like the recipe and will give it a try. The funny thing about mumbo sauce is that every carry out makes it a little different. I know people who will only go to certain carry outs because of their mumbo sauce. Keep up the good work John.
