This grate apple crisp eliminates the time consuming prep of peeling, coring, and slicing apples. Besides using less effort, we get a texture and flavor closer to an apple jam, which makes for a uniquely delicious crisp. And yes, you'll definitely want a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

Couple of thoughts. First is about the topping which I agree seems to almost always include the oates. Except in my family . The recipe my mother gave me when I went to college (which came from her mother) calls for a half a cup of solid butter, 1 cup of white sugar, and 3/4 of a cup of flour . What you cream together to create a crumble.
My second thought, is something I discovered in college. That while apples are usually what people are looking for, a very easy alternative is a bag of frozen blueberries and a bag of frozen raspberries. Mix them together in your buttered baking dish, no sugar or spices. Then crumble the topping over and bake while you're having dinner. It seems to take quite a long time, like an hour to an hour and a half, but it is a sweet and tart wonderful and easy desert.

I bet it'd work really nicely with pears, too. Even better, in my experience you CAN eat a pear's core, so you don't have to fuss with avoiding it when doing the shredding. I bet you could just omit the grape-nuts and just replace it with more oats. That was the case in your oatmeal cookie recipe, which I've adapted and used in all sorts of ways.

Although I'm sure that this recipe tastes good, I must recommend Chef Johns original Apple Crisp recipe from many years ago. That original recipe is the reason that I started subscribing to Food Wishes, as it is the BEST Apple crisp recipe on the internet!

Sorry, but I loathe grating. I think I will use a mandoline for thin slices, stack them and mince. Or throw the apples in a food chopper (look like a food processor but small and only chop. Everything looks good but no grape nuts for me, just more oats.

Thought this looked pretty good so I went to add Grape Nuts to my grocery order. Not available in local stores (South Western Ontario, Canada) and the best price I found online was over $40 with delivery. I feel a substitution coming on.

It wasn't a valid excuse to begin with! Most people could really stand some practice on their knife skills like you said. And something with this much fruit would be a terrific way to hone your pear-ing knife abilities!

Very apPEELING apple weather dessert!
I forgot all about Grape Nuts, but using them for a crisp might be their best incarnation, since actually trying to eat them as cereal will wear you out.

This is how my mother always made apple crumble in the UK in the 60's, always grated apples with a crumble topping (butter, sugar flour without oats or grape nuts) Delicious. Yum.

This man taught me how to make buttermilk biscuits, as a British citizen. Just wanted to let you know that your recipes are international and help hopeless chefs like myself: )

I SO want to like this but Im afraid: If its not crisp cold, why bother Plus I never liked Grape Nuts. They were too hard even when I had younger teeth. Any ideas

If you don’t have apples then potatoes work just fine, I usually substitute butter with Vaseline and it comes out great. My mother used to make this every Christmas.

Everyone who doesn’t want to invest in a whole box of Grape Nuts: it makes an excellent-I dare say the best meatloaf ingredient (in place of, say, bread crumbs.

Looks like you're wasting half of the apple in order to avoid grating your fingers. Better to use an apple corer and grate the apple in a food processor.

My maternal grandmother wasn't known for her cooking skills - all very simple and unseasoned dishes. but WOW! She made the meatiest coleslaw in Philadelphia!

And by using unpeeled apples you're getting some good fiber. I just wish I could get past the Grape Nuts part cuz for me that's just not happening.

Easy fix. Bake the apples by themselves. Make your granola-like topping. Assemble and serve. Abracadabra. Cooler apple. Still crispy topping. Tadaa.

Whats a substitute for grape nut cereal Don’t get it where I live like maybe granola/ muesli or nuts Cos it’s have no idea what grapenut cereal is!
reply

The grape nuts are a wild choice. Not saying its wrong or anything, I'll probably even try it, but I'd never consider that without your suggestion.
reply

No peel
No slice
Oh. you need to grate them.
I'll try it anyways but the taste of disappointment might ruin the experience.
